La forma. so + aggettivo o avverbio; such + nome, con o senza aggettivo. La conseguenza si aggiunge con that.

It was so cold that we stayed at home. so + aggettivo
He spoke so quickly that I couldn't follow. so + avverbio
It was such a cold day that we stayed at home. such a + aggettivo + nome
They were such nice people that we stayed all evening. such + plurale
We had such bad weather that we came home early. such + non numerabile

E «è così gentile» resta so: He's so kind.

L'articolo. Con un nome numerabile al singolare a si mette dopo such: such a nice day, such an interesting book. Davanti al plurale e ai non numerabili l'articolo non c'è: such nice people, such good news, such bad weather.

so con le quantità. Davanti a much, many, few, little sempre so, anche se dopo c'è un nome: There were so many people that we couldn't get in. I had so little time that I took a taxi. Al posto di so many e so much nel parlato si dice anche such a lot of: There were such a lot of people…

that si può togliere. Nel parlato that spesso sparisce: It was so cold we stayed in. It was such a good film I watched it twice.

Nella domanda e nella negazione la regola è la stessa: Why are you so tired? — «Perché sei così stanco?» I've never seen such a beautiful garden.

In queste frasi so e such sono accentati — su di loro poggia tutto il pensiero: It was SO cold…, It was SUCH a long day…. that invece è atono: /ðət/.

Senza conseguenza — un'esclamazione. so e such rafforzano anche da soli, senza that: It's so cold today! She's such a nice person! È più emotivo di very: very informa, so e such esclamano.

Confronta con too (A1 #18) e enough (A2 #13):

It was so cold that we didn't go out. così freddo che… — la conseguenza è detta
It was too cold to go out. troppo freddo per…
It wasn't warm enough to go out. non abbastanza caldo per…

Il senso è vicino, ma so … that racconta che cosa è successo, e too … to che cosa non si poteva fare.

Altri esempi:

The coffee was so hot that I burnt my tongue.
It was such a long journey that we stopped twice.
The film was so boring that half the audience left.
She speaks such good English that people think she's British.
I was so tired that I fell asleep on the train.

✗ It was so cold weather → ✓ It was such cold weather / The weather was so cold. ✗ a such nice day → ✓ such a nice day. ✗ so much people → ✓ so many people.

Mettiti alla prova. so o such: It was ___ a good idea? Che cosa non va in It was a such boring film?

mostra le risposte
such; There were so many people that we couldn't get in; a va dopo such: It was such a boring film.
