În engleză îi corespund două cuvinte — so și such.

It was so cold that we stayed at home. so + adjectiv
He spoke so quickly that I couldn't follow. so + adverb
It was such a cold day that we stayed at home. such a + adjectiv + substantiv
They were such nice people that we stayed all evening. such + plural
We had such bad weather that we came home early. such + nenumărabil

Uită-te la fraza engleză: so cold — fără substantiv, such a long day — cu substantiv. Iar „e atât de bun” fără substantiv rămâne so: He's so kind.

Articolul. Cu un substantiv numărabil la singular, a stă după such: such a nice day, such an interesting book. Înaintea pluralului și a nenumărabilelor articol nu e: such nice people, such good news, such bad weather.

so cu cantitatea. Înaintea lui much, many, few, little se pune întotdeauna so, deși mai departe vine un substantiv: There were so many people that we couldn't get in. I had so little time that I took a taxi. Motivul: so stă aici înaintea cuvântului de cantitate, nu înaintea substantivului. În locul lui so many și so much, în conversație se spune și such a lot of: There were such a lot of people…

that poate lipsi. În conversație that dispare des: It was so cold we stayed in. It was such a good film I watched it twice.

În întrebare și negație regula e aceeași: Why are you so tired? — „De ce ești atât de obosit?” I've never seen such a beautiful garden.

Cum se pronunță. so și such sunt accentuate în aceste fraze — pe ele se sprijină tot gândul: It was SO cold…, It was SUCH a long day…. Iar that e neaccentuat: /ðət/.

Fără urmare — exclamație. so și such întăresc și singure, fără that: It's so cold today! She's such a nice person! E mai emoțional decât very: very informează, iar so și such exclamă.

Compară cu too (A1 #18) și enough (A2 #13):

It was so cold that we didn't go out. atât de frig, încât… — urmarea e spusă
It was too cold to go out. prea frig ca să…
It wasn't warm enough to go out. nu destul de cald ca să…

Sensul e apropiat, dar so … that povestește ce s-a întâmplat, iar too … to — ce nu s-a putut face.

Încă exemple:

The coffee was so hot that I burnt my tongue.
It was such a long journey that we stopped twice.
The film was so boring that half the audience left.
She speaks such good English that people think she's British. Vorbește engleza atât de bine, încât lumea o crede britanică.
I was so tired that I fell asleep on the train.

✗ It was so cold weather → ✓ It was such cold weather / The weather was so cold. ✗ a such nice day → ✓ such a nice day. ✗ so much people → ✓ so many people.

Verifică-te. so sau such: It was ___ a good idea? Ce nu e în regulă în It was a such boring film?

arată răspunsurile
such; There were so many people that we couldn't get in; a stă după such: It was such a boring film.

Cel puțin o propoziție cu so … that și una cu such … that.

Listă de verificare înainte de lecția 31:

  • of stă doar înaintea lui the, my, these sau a unui pronume?
  • so înaintea adjectivului, such a înaintea substantivului?
