It was so cold that we stayed at home. so + adjetivo
He spoke so quickly that I couldn't follow. so + advérbio
It was such a cold day that we stayed at home. such a + adjetivo + substantivo
They were such nice people that we stayed all evening. such + plural
We had such bad weather that we came home early. such + incontável

“Ele é tão gentil” — He's so kind, mas “uma pessoa tão gentil” — such a kind person.

O artigo. Com um substantivo contável no singular, o a vem depois de such: such a nice day, such an interesting book. Antes de plural e de incontável não há artigo: such nice people, such good news, such bad weather.

so com quantidade. Antes de much, many, few, little vem sempre so, embora depois venha um substantivo: There were so many people that we couldn't get in. I had so little time that I took a taxi. No lugar de so many e so much, na conversa também se diz such a lot of: There were such a lot of people…

O that pode cair. Na conversa o that muitas vezes some: It was so cold we stayed in. It was such a good film I watched it twice.

Na pergunta e na negação a regra é a mesma: Why are you so tired? — “Por que você está tão cansado?” I've never seen such a beautiful garden.

Como pronunciar. so e such nessas frases são tônicos — neles se apoia toda a ideia: It was SO cold…, It was SUCH a long day…. Já o that é átono: /ðət/.

Sem consequência — exclamação. so e such também intensificam sozinhos, sem that: It's so cold today! She's such a nice person! É mais emotivo do que very: very informa, so e such exclamam.

Compare com too (A1 #18) e enough (A2 #13):

It was so cold that we didn't go out. tão frio que… — a consequência é dita
It was too cold to go out. frio demais para…
It wasn't warm enough to go out. não estava quente o suficiente para…

O sentido é parecido, mas so … that conta o que aconteceu, e too … to — o que não deu para fazer.

Mais exemplos:

The coffee was so hot that I burnt my tongue. O café estava tão quente que eu queimei a língua.
It was such a long journey that we stopped twice.
The film was so boring that half the audience left.
She speaks such good English that people think she's British. Ela fala inglês tão bem que as pessoas acham que ela é britânica.
I was so tired that I fell asleep on the train. Eu estava tão cansado que dormi no trem.

Assim não se diz. ✗ It was so cold weather → ✓ It was such cold weather / The weather was so cold. ✗ a such nice day → ✓ such a nice day. ✗ so much people → ✓ so many people: people é plural em inglês, mesmo que “gente” seja singular.

Teste-se. so ou such: It was ___ a good idea?

mostrar as respostas
such; There were so many people that we couldn't get in; o a vem depois de such: It was such a boring film.
