viedoklis izmērs vecums forma krāsa no kurienes materiāls kam paredzēts
lovely big old round brown Italian wooden dining table

Fakts ir tas, ko var redzēt vai izmērīt: izmērs (big, tiny, long, tall), vecums (old, new, young), forma (round, square), krāsa. Materiālu bieži izsaka ar vienkāršu lietvārdu bez jebkādas galotnes: a stone house, a gold ring, a wool coat — latviski līdzīgi „akmens māja”, „zelta gredzens”, tikai ģenitīvā. Tāpat nolūku: a kitchen table, a sports bag.

a small black handbag maza melna somiņa
a beautiful old house skaista veca māja
an expensive Swiss watch dārgs Šveices pulkstenis
a long wooden table garš koka galds
a nice new leather jacket jauka jauna ādas jaka

Komats un and. Divus viedokļa īpašības vārdus var atdalīt ar komatu: a lovely, comfortable sofa. Divas krāsas savieno ar and: a black and white photo. Kad īpašības vārdi stāv pēc darbības vārda, atsevišķi no lietvārda, starp pēdējiem diviem arī vajag and: The bag is small and black.

I was bored. — Man bija garlaicīgi. The lecture was boring. — Lekcija bija garlaicīga.
She's interested in art. The exhibition is interesting.
We were tired after the journey. The journey was tiring.
I was surprised by the price. The price was surprising.
He was confused. The instructions were confusing.
They were disappointed. The hotel was disappointing.

Šeit pieder arī excited — exciting, worried — worrying, annoyed — annoying (sakaitināts — kaitinošs), embarrassed — embarrassing (apmulsis — neveikls, apkaunojošs).

Forma ar -ing var būt arī cilvēkam, ja viņš pats izraisa sajūtu citos: He's boring — „viņš ir garlaicīgs cilvēks”, She's an interesting person — „interesants cilvēks”.

Kā pārbaudīt. Pajautājiet sev: kurš šeit jūt? Ja teikuma priekšmets pats izjūt sajūtu — -ed: I was bored — man bija garlaicīgi. Ja tas izraisa sajūtu citos — -ing: The film was boring — filma dzina garlaicību. Tāpēc lieta, vieta, notikums gandrīz vienmēr saņem -ing: filmai vai braucienam sajūtu nav. -ed ir cilvēkiem un dzīvniekiem: The dog looks bored.

Ar kādiem darbības vārdiem. Abas formas stāv ne tikai pēc be. Ar get forma ar -ed parāda pārmaiņu: I got bored after an hour. — „Pēc stundas man kļuva garlaicīgi”. You look worried. Pirms lietvārda iespējamas abas formas: a tired child — „noguris bērns”, a tiring day — „nogurdinoša diena”.

Salīdziniet:

I'm bored. Man ir garlaicīgi.
I'm boring.

Sajaukt tās nozīmē pateikt par sevi ne to, ko gribējāt.

Tā nesaka. ✗ I'm interesting in history → ✓ I'm interested in history. Interesi izjūt cilvēks, tāpēc vajag formu ar -ed; interesting pateiktu, ka jūs paši esat interesants citiem, un in pēc tā neliek.

Pārbaudiet sevi. Kā pateikt „Lekcijā man bija garlaicīgi”? Salieciet pareizā secībā: jacket, leather, black, a. Ko ielikt frāzē What a ___ day! — tired vai tiring?

rādīt atbildes
I was bored at the lecture / I was bored during the lecture; a black leather jacket; tiring — diena nejūt nogurumu, tā nogurdina citus.

1

I'm boring I'm bored vietā

Frāze I'm boring ir pareiza, bet nozīmē „es esmu garlaicīgs cilvēks”. Lai pateiktu „man ir garlaicīgi”, vajag I'm bored. Tāpat „man ir interesanti” — I'm interested, nevis I'm interesting.

2

Īpašības vārdu secība

✗ a black small handbag → ✓ a small black handbag. ✗ an old beautiful house → ✓ a beautiful old house. Latviski secība ir brīvāka — der gan „maza melna somiņa”, gan „melna maza somiņa”, — un īpašības vārdus liek tādā secībā, kādā tie ienāk prātā. Materiāls grūtības sagādā retāk: „ādas”, „koka” arī latviski stāv tieši pirms lietvārda. Angliski pretējo secību var dzirdēt tikai pretstatot: the RED big bag, not the blue one.

3

-ed par lietu

✗ The journey was tired → ✓ The journey was tiring. ✗ The news was surprised → ✓ The news was surprising.

Four stars out of five

I spent months looking for a kitchen table, and last week I finally found one on a second-hand website: a lovely old round wooden table, made in Scotland about seventy years ago. The price was surprisingly low, so at first I was a bit worried. But when it arrived, I wasn't disappointed at all. The wood is in excellent condition, and the four heavy legs are solid.

There was one problem. The legs come off for delivery, so I had to put them back on myself. The instructions were confusing — two pages of tiny drawings and no words — and after an hour I was tired and annoyed. I'm not very good at fixing things, so in the end I rang my brother. He has a big red toolbox, and he's always pleased to help. Ten minutes later the table was standing on its legs.

Now it stands in our small bright kitchen, and everyone who sees it asks where it's from. The seller was friendly and quick to answer questions. If you're interested in old furniture, I can recommend her shop. Just ask her for better instructions!

Paraugs

Last month I bought a small black leather bag from a second-hand shop. It was surprisingly cheap, and at first I was very pleased with it. After a week one of the straps broke, and I felt really disappointed. The shop assistant was friendly, but the repair was annoying and slow. I'm not so interested in second-hand shops now. Next time I'll buy a new bag.
