Gramatika
15 minA2 #13 jūs teicāt, cik kā ir: a lot of work, a few days, not much time. Tagad jautājums ir cits — kāda grupas daļa. „Lielākā daļa manu kolēģu”, „neviens no mums”, „abi brāļi”, „neviens no abiem variantiem”, „puse biļešu”.
No „visi” līdz „neviens”:
| vārds | daļa | piemērs |
|---|---|---|
| all | visi, viss | All of my friends came to the party. |
| most | lielākā daļa | Most of the guests left before midnight. |
| half | puse | Half of the tickets have already gone. |
| many | daudzi | Many of my colleagues live outside London. |
| some | daži, daļa | Some of them work at weekends. |
| a few | daži, nedaudzi | A few of us stayed to help. |
| none | neviens, nekas | None of the shops were open. |
|---|---|---|
| both | abi, abas | Both of my parents are teachers. |
| either | jebkurš no diviem | Either of these days is fine for me. |
| neither | neviens no diviem | Neither of the answers is right. |
Kad vajag of. Daļas vārdu var likt tieši pirms lietvārda: most people, some students, all children. Ja turpretī runa ir par konkrētu, jau zināmu grupu — the students, my friends, these books, us, them, — starp daļas vārdu un grupu nostājas of:
| vispār — bez of | konkrēta grupa — ar of |
|---|---|
| Most people like holidays. | Most of the people in my street have a car. |
| Some students work at night. | Some of my students work at night. |
| All children need sleep. | All of us were tired. |
| No shops are open on Christmas Day. | None of the shops were open. |
Kāpēc tā: of šeit nozīmē „no”. „Lielākā daļa no tiem studentiem, par kuriem runājam” — most of the students. Ja konkrētas grupas nav, ņemt „no” nav no kā, un of neliek. No tā izriet pārbaude: aiz of obligāti stāv the, my, these, those vai vietniekvārds. Bez tiem of nav vajadzīgs.
Ar vietniekvārdu of vajag vienmēr: all of us, both of them, none of it, most of you.
Vārdiem all, both un half ir brīvība: pirms the un my vārdu of var izlaist. all the students = all of the students, both my parents = both of my parents, half the class. Pārējiem vārdiem tā nevar: tikai most of the students, some of my friends.
all un both pēc teikuma priekšmeta. We all agreed. — „Mēs visi piekritām”. My parents are both teachers. — „Mani vecāki abi ir skolotāji”. The guests have all gone home.
none un no. no stāv tieši pirms lietvārda: No students came. none — pirms of vai pavisam viens, atbildē: None of the students came. — How many tickets are left? — None. Abi vārdi jau nes noliegumu, tāpēc darbības vārds aiz tiem ir apstiprinošs: None of them came. Latviski „neviens no viņiem neatnāca” noliegums skan divreiz, angliski — vienreiz. Tas pats likums, kas neither … nor (B1 #6) un nobody (A2 #14).
Divi vai vairāk. both, either, neither runā tikai par diviem. Ja cilvēku vai lietu ir trīs un vairāk, vajag all, any, none: None of my three brothers lives here, nevis neither. Pēc either un neither bez of stāv vienskaitlis: either day, neither answer. Ar of — daudzskaitlis: neither of the answers.
not … either nozīmē to pašu, ko neither, un sarunā skan ierastāk: I don't like either of them = I like neither of them — „man nepatīk neviens no abiem”.
neither jūs jau esat sastapuši divās citās lomās: neither … nor (B1 #6) un Neither do I (B1 #20). Šeit ir trešā loma — „neviens no diviem”.
a few un few, a little un little. Artikuls apgriež vērtējumu. a few (ar skaitāmiem) un a little (ar neskaitāmiem) — „daži”, „nedaudz”, un ar to pietiek. Bez a tie paši vārdi nozīmē „maz”, „gandrīz nav”, un tas ir slikti.
| I've got a few friends in Leeds, so I'm never lonely. | daži — un tas ir labi |
| I've got few friends in Leeds, so I'm often lonely. | maz — sūdzība |
| We've got a little time — let's have a coffee. | nedaudz, bet ir |
| We've got little time — hurry up. | gandrīz nav |
Sarunā few un little bez artikula skan grāmatnieciski. To vietā parasti saka not many, not much vai only a few: I haven't got many friends here. Bet quite a few nozīmē tieši pretējo — „diezgan daudz”: Quite a few of my colleagues cycle to work.
Darbības vārds. Pēc most of, some of, all of, half of darbības vārds skatās uz lietvārdu aiz of: Most of the students are here, bet Most of the money was spent. Ja aiz of stāv vārds-grupa — class, team, family, — britu angļu valodā pareizi abi skaitļi: Half of the class has been to Spain (klase kā viens veselums) un Half of the class have been to Spain (cilvēki tajā). Pēc none of, neither of un either of arī pareizi abi: None of us is perfect un None of us are perfect, Neither of them knows un Neither of them know. Vienskaitlis skan stingrāk, un oficiālā vēstulē izvēlas to; daudzskaitlis parasti ir sarunā. Kļūdas nav ne vienā, ne otrā.
Vēl piemēri:
| Most of my colleagues come to work by train. |
| Some of the questions were really difficult. | Daži jautājumi bija ļoti grūti. |
| Half of the class have been to Spain. | Puse grupas ir bijuši Spānijā. |
| None of us knew the answer. | Neviens no mums nezināja atbildi. |
| Both of my sisters live abroad. | Abas manas māsas dzīvo ārzemēs. |
| Monday or Tuesday? Either day is fine. | Pirmdien vai otrdien? Der jebkura diena. |
Tā nesaka. ✗ all us, ✗ both they → ✓ all of us, both of them. ✗ most the students → ✓ most of the students.
Pārbaudiet sevi. Kā pateikt „Lielākā daļa manu draugu dzīvo Londonā”? Ar ko I have a few friends here atšķiras no I have few friends here? Kā pateikt „neviena no abām atbildēm nav pareiza”?

Latviešu valodas runātāju kļūdas
pielāgots tavai valodaiof tur, kur tas nav vajadzīgs
✗ Most of students work
✓ Most students work
(studenti vispār) vai Most of the students in my group work (konkrētie). Latviskais „lielākā daļa studentu” abās nozīmēs skan vienādi, bet ģenitīvs un variants „lielākā daļa no studentiem” pasufleros „no” — of. Taču angļu of prasa aiz sevis the, my vai vietniekvārdu.
the most nozīmē „lielākā daļa”
✗ The most of people prefer tea
✓ Most people prefer tea
the most ir vispārākā pakāpe (A2 #8): the most expensive — „visdārgākais”. Latviešu „lielākā daļa” skan tāpat kā „lielākā pilsēta” — the biggest city, — un roka pieliek the, kā pirms vispārākās pakāpes.
Dubultais noliegums
✗ None of them didn't come → ✓ None of them came. ✗ Neither of us didn't know → ✓ Neither of us knew.
✗ Neither of my three brothers drives
✓ None of my three brothers drives
few a few vietā
Uzsvars krīt uz daļas vārdu un uz lietvārdu: MOST of the STUdents /ˈməʊst əv ðə ˈstjuːdnts/, SOME of them /ˈsʌm əv ðəm/. all of us saplūst vienā vārdā: /ˈɔːl əv əs/.
a frāzē a few nenorijiet. /ə ˈfjuː/ pret /fjuː/: viena vāja skaņa atšķir „daži” no „maz”. Tas pats ar a little /ə ˈlɪtl/.
Teksts
5 minThere are twelve of us in our Tuesday evening Spanish class, and last week our teacher gave us a short survey about our lives. Here are the results.
Most of us work full-time, and a few work part-time. None of us are students any more — the youngest person in the group is twenty-nine. Half of the class have been to Spain at least once, but only two people have lived there: Paul and Ruth. Both of them spent a year in Madrid, and neither of them wants to go back to an office job.
All of us have busy evenings, so homework is a problem. Some people do it on the train in the morning, and some hardly do it at all. Few of us practise speaking outside the class, and that's the biggest weakness of the group. We have a little time before the exam in June, so our teacher has a plan: every week, two of us are going to meet for a coffee and speak only Spanish. We'll meet on Mondays or Wednesdays — either day is fine for most people.
I asked my partner, Jenny, if she was nervous about the exam. "Not really," she said. "Most exams are easier than people think. And all of my friends who took it last year passed."

Paraugs
There are fifteen people in my team at work. Most of us live in the city, but a few of my colleagues come in from the countryside. Half of the team have children. None of us are older than fifty. Both of our managers speak French, and neither of them drives to work. Few of us take a proper lunch break — we're always too busy.
