„Atkarīgs no”, „gaidīt autobusu”, „klausīties mūziku”, „paskaidrot man”.

Forma. Prievārds stāv uzreiz pēc darbības vārda, un aiz tā — tas, uz ko attiecas darbība: It depends on the weather. I'm waiting for the bus. Noliegumā prievārds paliek pie darbības vārda: I don't agree with you.

I'm waiting for Tom. Who are you waiting for?
It depends on the price. What does it depend on?
This bag belongs to Anna. Who does this bag belong to?
They're talking about the new manager. Who are they talking about?

Prievārds jautājuma beigās ir sarunvalodas angļu valodas norma, nevis paviršība.

Darbības vārdi ar prievārdu. Prievārdi šeit nav gluži nejauši: katram ir savs virziens, un tas palīdz iegaumēt darbības vārdus grupās.

prievārds ko tas pieliek darbības vārdi
for to, ko grib dabūt wait for, look for (meklēt), ask for, apply for, pay for
to uz ko vērsts listen to, talk to, belong to, reply to, happen to
about tēma think about, talk about, worry about, complain about
on atbalsts depend on, concentrate on, spend money on
at punkts, uz kuru skatās look at, laugh at, point at
with kopā ar kādu agree with, argue with
of no kā consist of

pay prasa uzmanību. Par lietu maksā — pay for the coffee, bet pašu rēķinu, cilvēku vai summu — bez prievārda: pay the bill, pay the waiter, pay ten pounds.

look veido trīs dažādus darbības vārdus — ar to prievārds izšķir visu nozīmi:

I'm looking for my keys. Es meklēju atslēgas.
Look at this photo! Paskaties uz šo fotogrāfiju!
She looks after her grandmother. Viņa rūpējas par vecmāmiņu.

Darbības vārds + kādu + prievārds. Dažiem darbības vārdiem ir divi papildinātāji, un prievārds stāv pirms otrā: thank someone for something, ask someone for something, spend money on something, borrow something from someone. Thanks for your help. I asked my boss for a day off. We spent too much on the hotel.

Īpašs slazds ir explain. Latviski „paskaidro man” — ar datīvu, bez prievārda. Angliski to, kam skaidro, pievieno tikai ar to: Can you explain the rule to me? Vai: Can you explain to me how it works? Tāpat uzvedas describe something to someone un say something to someone.

Darbības vārdi bez prievārda. Pretējais slazds: angļu darbības vārds iztiek bez prievārda, lai gan latviskā frāze to pasufleros — vai nu tai pašai ir prievārds („atbildēt uz”, „precēties ar”, „nokļūt līdz”), vai to ienes tuvs darbības vārds („runāt par” — un about pārceļo pie discuss).

✗ ✓ latviski
discuss about the plan discuss the plan apspriest plānu
enter into the room enter the room ieiet istabā
answer to the question answer the question atbildēt uz jautājumu
marry with him marry him apprecēties ar viņu
phone to her phone her piezvanīt viņai
reach to the station reach the station nokļūt līdz stacijai
join to the club join the club iestāties klubā

the reason for the delay kavēšanās iemesls
the answer to the question atbilde uz jautājumu
a solution to the problem problēmas risinājums
the key to the door durvju atslēga
an invitation to the party uzaicinājums uz ballīti
an interest in history interese par vēsturi
the difference between them atšķirība starp tiem
a problem with the car problēma ar mašīnu

Īpašības vārdi ar prievārdu. Tās pašas sistēmas trešā daļa. Pēc daudziem īpašības vārdiem arī stāv savs prievārds, un pēc latviskā tulkojuma to neuzminēt: „stiprs matemātikā” — good at maths, „dusmīgs uz viņu” — angry with him. Savienojumu iegaumē veselu:

good at / bad at She's good at maths.
interested in I'm interested in history.
afraid of He's afraid of dogs.
proud of We're proud of our daughter.
tired of I'm tired of waiting. — Man ir apnicis gaidīt.
keen on He's keen on football. — Viņš aizraujas ar futbolu.
worried about They're worried about money.
angry with — uz kādu, about — par ko She was angry with me about the car.
pleased with I'm pleased with the result.
different from My job is different from yours.
famous for The town is famous for its cheese.
full of The room was full of people.
married to She's married to a doctor.

Daudzi no tiem ir formas ar -ed no B1 #26: interested in, worried about, disappointed with. Bieži īpašības vārdam ir tas pats prievārds, kas radniecīgajam darbības vārdam vai lietvārdam: worry about — worried about, an interest in — interested in. tired un tired of ir dažādas lietas: I'm tired — „esmu noguris”, I'm tired of it — „man tas ir apnicis”. keen on ir ļoti britisks savienojums: I'm not keen on spicy food — „neesmu liels asa ēdiena cienītājs”. different from vietā britu runā bieži saka different to; arī tas ir pareizi.

Salīdziniet viena saknes darbības vārdu un lietvārdu:

Please answer the question. darbības vārds — bez prievārda
What's the answer to the question? lietvārds — ar to
We discussed the plan. darbības vārds — bez prievārda
We had a discussion about the plan. lietvārds — ar about

Pēc prievārda darbības vārds stāv formā ar -ing — pēc jebkura: pēc darbības vārda prievārda, kā I'm thinking about moving, Thanks for coming, She insisted on paying (B1 #16), un pēc īpašības vārda prievārda: good at cooking, afraid of flying, tired of waiting.

Vēl piemēri:

I agree with you, but it depends on the price.
What happened to your car? Kas notika ar tavu mašīnu?
He spent all his money on books. Viņš iztērēja visu naudu grāmatām.
The team consists of six people. Komanda sastāv no sešiem cilvēkiem.

Tā nesaka. ✗ What are you waiting? → ✓ What are you waiting for?

Kas nav kārtībā teikumā We discussed about the price?

It depends on the weather; discuss neņem prievārdu: We discussed the price; good at, afraid of, proud of.

Latviešu valodas runātāju kļūdas

pielāgots tavai valodai
1

Prievārds no latviešu valodas

✗ depend from → ✓ depend on. ✗ consist from → ✓ consist of. ✗ afraid from dogs → ✓ afraid of dogs. „Atkarīgs no”, „sastāv no”, „baidās no” — latviešu „no” tiek tulkots tieši, un iznāk from.

2

Izlaists prievārds

✗ I listen music → ✓ I listen to music. ✗ We waited the bus → ✓ We waited for the bus.

3

Lieks prievārds

✗ discuss about the plan

✗ marry with him

✓ discuss the plan

marry him. „Apspriest” prievārda nav, bet blakus ir „runāt par” — talk about, — un about pārceļo pie discuss. „Apprecēties ar” velk savu „ar” līdzi.

4

explain me

✗ Explain me the rule → ✓ Explain the rule to me. ✗ Can you explain me how it works? → ✓ Can you explain to me how it works? Latviešu „man” nostājas uzreiz pēc darbības vārda, kā give me un show me. Bet explain tā neprot: to, kam skaidro, tas pievieno tikai ar to.

5

Prievārds pēc īpašības vārda no latviešu valodas

✗ good in maths → ✓ good at maths („stiprs matemātikā”). ✗ angry on him → ✓ angry with him („dusmīgs uz viņu”). ✗ married with a doctor → ✓ married to a doctor („precējusies ar ārstu”). Latviskais savienojums pasufleros savu variantu, bet angļu savienojums ar to sakrīt tikai nejauši. Izteiciens married with children pastāv, bet nozīmē ko citu: „precējies, ir bērni”.

6

Ģenitīvs kļūst par of

✗ the reason of the delay

✓ the reason for the delay

Latviski „kavēšanās iemesls” — ģenitīvs, un to ierasts tulkot ar of. Bet angļu lietvārdiem ir savi prievārdi.

Izruna

3 min

Frāzes iekšienē prievārds ir neuzsvērts: for /fə/, to /tə/, at /ət/, of /əv/, from /frəm/. I'm waiting for the bus — /aɪm ˈweɪtɪŋ fə ðə ˈbʌs/. Uzsvars — uz darbības vārda un uz lietvārda.

Jautājuma beigās prievārds skan pilnā formā. Who are you waiting for? — /fɔː/, Who does it belong to? — /tuː/, What are you looking at? — /æt/. Vājo formu frāzes beigās nelieto.

Darbības vārds un prievārds saplūst vienā vārdā: depends on /dɪˈpendz ɒn/, look at /ˈlʊk ət/, listen to /ˈlɪsn tə/ — burts t vārdā listen neskan.

Hi Sam,

Thanks for your message, and sorry I didn't reply to it sooner — it's been a busy week.

You asked about the job in Bristol. I applied for it at the start of the month, and on Monday I had the interview. They asked me a lot of questions about my last job and my reasons for leaving it. The answer to the last question took me ages: "What are you most proud of?" I'm still waiting for their decision, and I'm not very good at waiting. It depends on two things — how many other people they've interviewed and whether the manager agrees with me about the salary. We discussed it for half an hour, and I'm not sure we found a solution to the problem.

If I get the job, we'll have to look for a flat in Bristol. Anna doesn't worry about things like that, but I do. And who's going to look after Mum? She hates asking anyone for help, and she never listens to anybody but me.

Anyway, enough about me. What are you working on at the moment? And have you found out who that old bike in your garden belongs to?

Love, Kate
