B1 #1'de Past Perfect tek bir cümlede Past Simple'ın yanında duruyordu. Gerçek bir anlatım daha uzundur ve içinde üç geçmiş zaman birden çalışır. Her birinin kendi görevi vardır; onları karıştırırsanız dinleyen neyin neden sonra olduğunu anlayamaz.

Yapı — hepsi tanıdık. Past Simple (A2 #1): I left, I didn't leave. Past Continuous (A2 #2): I was leaving, They were talking. Past Perfect (B1 #1): I had left.

Hangisi neyi üstlenir:

Anlatımı bir film gibi düşünmek kolaylık sağlar. Past Simple olay örgüsünü ilerletir: her yeni olay bir sonraki karedir. Past Continuous dekordur — kare başladığında zaten süren şey. Past Perfect geriye kısa bir bakıştır: bu sahneden önce ne olmuştu ve sahne neden böyle.

Anlatının noktasını nasıl bulursunuz. Kendinize sorun: şu anda hangi anı anlatıyorum? O anda ve ondan sonra olan her şey — Past Simple. O anda zaten süren her şey — Past Continuous. Ondan önce bitmiş her şey — Past Perfect. Nokta olay örgüsüyle birlikte ilerler; bu yüzden aynı olay hikâyenin başında Past Simple'dadır, bir paragraf sonra ise ondan Past Perfect ile söz edilir.

after ve before'dan sonra Past Perfect zorunlu değildir: neyin önce olduğunu bağlacın kendisi söyler. After I finished the report, I went home — had finished ile söylendiği kadar doğrudur. as soon as ile iki fiil de genellikle Past Simple'dadır: bir olay öbürünün hemen ardından gelir.

by the time ana cümlede hemen her zaman Past Perfect ister. “-dığı ana kadar” demektir ve ana olay o ana kadar çoktan bitmiştir: By the time we arrived, everyone had left.

Ben geldiğimde kız kardeşimin ne yaptığı sorusuna üç cevabı karşılaştırın:

When I got home, my sister made dinner. Ben geldim — o da yemek yapmaya başladı.
When I got home, my sister was making dinner. Tam o sırada yemek yapıyordu.
When I got home, my sister had made dinner. Yemek çoktan hazırdı.

Başlangıç aynı, hikâyeler üç ayrı. Farkı yalnızca fiilin zamanı yapar.

Ölçü kuralı. Past Perfect geriye adım atmak için gerekir, orada kalmak için değil. Uzun bir öncesi anlatılırken onu ilk bir-iki cümlede kullanırlar, sonra Past Simple'a geçerler — sıra artık bellidir:

I had met Anna years before, in Edinburgh. We worked in the same café and shared a flat. Then she moved to Canada, and we lost touch.

Kısımların sırası serbesttir. İngilizce çoğu zaman sonuçla başlar, sebebi sonra açıklar: I couldn't get in because I had lost my keys. Bağlaçlı kısım önce gelirse ondan sonra virgül konur: By the time we arrived, the shop had closed.

Böyle söylenmez. ✗ After I had finished, I had gone home → ✓ After I had finished, I went home. Daha sonraki olay anlatının noktasının ta kendisidir, onun zamanı Past Simple'dır.

Türkçe “Biz varana kadar dükkân kapanmıştı” der, “-ene kadar” da akla until getirir. Ama until bir şeyin ne zamana kadar sürdüğünü söyler (I worked until two); o ana kadar çoktan olup biteni by the time söyler. Ardından when de gelmez: ✗ By the time when we arrived.

Her cümlede had

I had met Anna in Edinburgh. We had worked together. We had shared a flat… Hata değil, ama anlatım ağırlaşır. Türkçede öncesi anlatılırken “-mişti” cümleden cümleye sürebilir (“tanışmıştık, birlikte çalışmıştık…”); İngilizcede ilk cümleden sonra Past Simple'a geçilir.

Hep sebep önde

Türkçede sebep çoğu zaman önce gelir: “Anahtarlarımı kaybettiğim için içeri giremedim.” İngilizcede bu sıra da doğrudur (Because I had lost my keys, I couldn't get in), ama asıl söylenen olaysa sonuç öne, sebep because ile arkaya daha doğal düşer: ✓ I couldn't get in because I had lost my keys.

Uzun cümle anlam öbeklerine bölünür, aralarında kısa bir duraklama olur:

By the time I got to the office ‖ the meeting had already started. I had set my alarm for half past six ‖ but I hadn't heard it.

Duraklama kısımların sınırında, genellikle yazıda virgülün ya da bağlacın olduğu yerdedir. Özneyle yüklem arasında duraklanmaz.

İlk kısmın sonunda ses biraz yükselir — bu “devamı geliyor” işaretidir. Ses ancak bütün cümlenin sonunda düşer. By the time I got to the office'ten sonra sesinizi düşürürseniz dinleyen bitirdiğinizi sanar.

Öncesini anlatan had zayıftır — /həd/, zamirden sonra yalnızca /d/: I'd set my alarm /aɪd ˈset maɪ əˈlɑːm/.

By the time I got to the office on Monday, the meeting had already started. It was not a good beginning to my first week in a new job.

I had set my alarm for half past six, but I hadn't heard it. The night before, I had worked on my presentation until two in the morning and had fallen asleep on the sofa with my laptop on my knees. When I finally woke up, the sun was shining and the birds were singing. It was ten to nine.

As soon as I saw the time, I jumped up, put on yesterday's shirt and ran to the bus stop. It was raining hard, and of course I had left my umbrella at the office on Friday.

When I opened the door of the meeting room, everyone turned round. My new manager was standing by the board, and somebody had already written half of the plan on it. I said sorry and sat down.

After the meeting had finished, my manager asked me to stay. I expected the worst. But she just smiled and said, "Don't worry. On my first day here, I came to work in my slippers."
