: slowly، carefully، well، hard. والآن ثلاثة توضيحات: إلى أيّ درجة (quite well، extremely carefully)، ومقارنةً بمَن (more carefully than my brother)، وأين يقف الظرف في الجملة.
|---|---|---|
| قليلاً | a bit, slightly | I'm a bit tired. The soup is slightly salty. |
| باعتدال | fairly, quite, rather, pretty | The test was fairly easy. |
| بقوّة | very, really, extremely | She speaks extremely well. |
| تماماً | completely, totally, absolutely | You're absolutely right. |
a bit كلمة من لغة الحديث، وتكاد تكون دائماً عن شيء غير مرغوب: a bit cold، a bit expensive، a bit late. وعن الشيء الجيّد لا يُقال هكذا عادةً: بدل «a bit good» يقولون quite good.
The film was quite good — «الفيلم لا بأس به»، لكنه لم يُبهر أحداً. ومع الصفة التي هي «كاملة» أصلاً — right، sure، true، impossible — تعني quite «تماماً»: You're quite right — «أنت محقّ تماماً». I'm not quite sure — «لستُ متأكّداً تماماً».
It's rather cold today. The exam was rather difficult. The food was rather good — «والطعام، على غير المتوقَّع، كان جيّداً».
I know him fairly well.
أمّا very فلا تأتي مع الفعل: قبل الفعل نضع really، وبعد المفعول به very much: I really like this city، I like this city very much.
|---|---|---|
| carefully | more carefully | most carefully |
| quickly | more quickly | most quickly |
| fast | faster | fastest |
| hard | harder | hardest |
| early | earlier | earliest |
| late | later | latest |
| well | better | best |
| badly | worse | worst |
| far | further | furthest |
وwell وbadly شاذّتان — مثل good وbad.
يُقارَن بـthan: She drives more carefully than her brother. والتساوي وعدمه — as … as وnot as … as، كما في الصفات: He doesn't speak French as well as his wife.
بعد than وas يُقال في الحديث me وhim وher: She sings better than me. والأكثر عناية — مع الفعل: than I do، as he does.
في الحديث كثيراً ما تُسمع Can you speak slower? أو Come quicker! — الصيغة القصيرة بدل more slowly وmore quickly.
He opened the door slowly. |
| في الوسط | التكرار، already، just، really، almost | I really like it. She's already left. |
Luckily, nobody was hurt. |
She sang beautifully at the concert last night. He slowly opened the door — هكذا تبدو الجملة أدبية بعض الشيء.
الصحيح She speaks German well، لا ✗ She speaks well German.
| She works hard. | |
| She hardly works. |
| The train arrived late. | |
| I haven't seen him lately. |
| Could you speak more slowly, please? | |
| He drives more carefully than I do. |
| Who works the hardest in your team? | |
| I don't swim as well as my sister. | |
| The hotel was quite good, but the food was rather disappointing. | |
| Unfortunately, the museum was closed. |
✗ The water wasn't enough warm → ✓ The water wasn't warm enough. enough تأتي بعد الصفة وبعد الظرف (A2 #13): fast enough، well enough.
The hotel was quite good؟ أين تضع well في She speaks German؟

مكتوب للغتكfrom بدل than
✗ She drives better from me
✓ She drives better than me
✗ He drives more careful than me
✓ He drives more carefully than me
more مع -er
✗ more better، ✗ more faster → ✓ better، faster.
too much بمعنى «كثيراً»
I like this city too much جملة صحيحة، لكنها لا تمدح المدينة: too تعني «أكثر من اللازم» (A1 #18)، فهي شكوى أو مزاح. I like this city very much أو I really like this city. وvery وحدها لا تتّصل بالفعل: ✗ I very like it.
إن وقع الصوت على quite — It was QUITE good، — فالمعنى «لا بأس، لا شيء مميّز». وإن وقع على الصفة — It was quite GOOD، — فهذا مديح: «جيّد فعلاً».
في more carefully يقع النبر على الظرف: /mɔː ˈkeəfəli/. more غير منبورة، وthan كذلك: /ðən/.
My sister Lucy and I took our driving tests in the same month, and the results surprised everyone.
Lucy usually learns things faster than I do. She had lessons twice a week and was driving quite well after a month. I was slower. I drove very carefully — too carefully, my instructor said. "You don't have to stop completely at every corner," he told me. "Just drive confidently."
On the day of the test I was extremely nervous, but luckily the examiner was friendly and the roads were fairly quiet. I made one small mistake: I parked rather badly outside the post office. Still, I passed.
Lucy did worse. She was driving too fast on a wet road and didn't see a cyclist in time. She stopped suddenly, and nobody was hurt, but she failed. Unfortunately, she had to wait six weeks for the next test.
The second time, she passed easily. Now she drives better than I do, honestly — more smoothly, more confidently and more often. But she still says that I park more carefully than anyone she knows. And that's quite true.

I learnt to swim quite late, at the age of twelve. My younger brother learnt faster than I did, and he still swims better than me. At first I swam very slowly and rather badly. Luckily, our teacher was extremely patient. Now I swim fairly well, but I don't swim as fast as my brother. Honestly, I don't mind.
