अब तीन बातें और: कितना (quite well, extremely carefully), किसकी तुलना में (more carefully than my brother) और वाक्य में क्रियाविशेषण कहाँ आता है।

थोड़ा a bit, slightly I'm a bit tired. The soup is slightly salty.
ठीक-ठाक fairly, quite, rather, pretty The test was fairly easy.
बहुत very, really, extremely She speaks extremely well.
पूरी तरह completely, totally, absolutely You're absolutely right.

a bit — बोलचाल का शब्द है और लगभग हमेशा किसी अप्रिय बात के बारे में: a bit cold, a bit expensive, a bit late। अच्छी बात के बारे में आम तौर पर ऐसा नहीं कहते: “a bit good” की जगह quite good कहेंगे।

The film was quite good — “फ़िल्म ठीक-ठाक थी”, पर कोई कमाल नहीं। ऐसे विशेषण के साथ, जो अपने आप में “पूरा” है, — right, sure, true, impossible — quite का अर्थ है “बिलकुल”: You're quite right — “आप बिलकुल सही हैं”। I'm not quite sure — “मुझे पूरा यक़ीन नहीं है”।

It's rather cold today. The exam was rather difficult. The food was rather good — “और खाना तो अच्छा निकला”।

I know him fairly well. pretty — बोलचाल वाला “काफ़ी”: It's pretty expensive.

पर very क्रिया के साथ नहीं आता: क्रिया से पहले really आता है, कर्म के बाद — very much: I really like this city, I like this city very much।

carefully more carefully most carefully
quickly more quickly most quickly
fast faster fastest
hard harder hardest
early earlier earliest
late later latest
well better best
badly worse worst
far further furthest

well और badly नियम नहीं मानते — जैसे good और bad।

She drives more carefully than her brother. बराबरी और ग़ैर-बराबरी — as … as और not as … as, विशेषणों की तरह: He doesn't speak French as well as his wife.

बातचीत में than और as के बाद me, him, her आते हैं: She sings better than me. थोड़ा ज़्यादा सधा हुआ — क्रिया के साथ: than I do, as he does।

बातचीत में अक्सर Can you speak slower? या Come quicker! सुनाई देता है — more slowly, more quickly की जगह छोटा रूप।

He opened the door slowly.
बीच में आवृत्ति, already, just, really, almost I really like it. She's already left.
Luckily, nobody was hurt.

She sang beautifully at the concert last night. He slowly opened the door — ऐसा वाक्य थोड़ा साहित्यिक सुनाई देता है।

She speaks German well, ✗ She speaks well German नहीं।

She works hard.
She hardly works.
The train arrived late.
I haven't seen him lately.

Could you speak more slowly, please?
He drives more carefully than I do.
Who works the hardest in your team?
I don't swim as well as my sister.
The hotel was quite good, but the food was rather disappointing.
Unfortunately, the museum was closed.

✗ The water wasn't enough warm → ✓ The water wasn't warm enough।

The hotel was quite good She speaks German में well कहाँ रखेंगे?

Could you speak more slowly, please?; होटल ठीक-ठाक था, पर इससे ज़्यादा कुछ नहीं; अंत में: She speaks German well।

✗ He speaks well English

✗ I like very much tea

✓ He speaks English well

I like tea very much।

2

very — “बहुत” नहीं।

✗ I very like this city

✓ I really like this city / I like this city very much

✗ The film was too good

✓ The film was really good

पर too का अर्थ है “ज़रूरत से ज़्यादा” (A1 का पाठ 18): too fast, too late — यह शिकायत है, तारीफ़ नहीं।

4

✗ more faster, ✗ more better → ✓ faster, better। ✗ She drives more carefully from me → ✓ She drives more carefully than me।

अगर आवाज़ quite पर ज़ोर देती है — It was QUITE good, — तो अर्थ है “ठीक-ठाक, कुछ ख़ास नहीं”। अगर विशेषण पर — It was quite GOOD, — तो यह तारीफ़ है: “काफ़ी अच्छा”।

more carefully में बलाघात क्रियाविशेषण पर है: /mɔː ˈkeəfəli/। more बलाघात-रहित है, than भी: /ðən/।

My sister Lucy and I took our driving tests in the same month, and the results surprised everyone.

Lucy usually learns things faster than I do. She had lessons twice a week and was driving quite well after a month. I was slower. I drove very carefully — too carefully, my instructor said. "You don't have to stop completely at every corner," he told me. "Just drive confidently."

On the day of the test I was extremely nervous, but luckily the examiner was friendly and the roads were fairly quiet. I made one small mistake: I parked rather badly outside the post office. Still, I passed.

Lucy did worse. She was driving too fast on a wet road and didn't see a cyclist in time. She stopped suddenly, and nobody was hurt, but she failed. Unfortunately, she had to wait six weeks for the next test.

The second time, she passed easily. Now she drives better than I do, honestly — more smoothly, more confidently and more often. But she still says that I park more carefully than anyone she knows. And that's quite true.

I learnt to swim quite late, at the age of twelve. My younger brother learnt faster than I did, and he still swims better than me. At first I swam very slowly and rather badly. Luckily, our teacher was extremely patient. Now I swim fairly well, but I don't swim as fast as my brother. Honestly, I don't mind.
