עכשיו שלוש תוספות: באיזו מידה (quite well, extremely carefully), בהשוואה למי (more carefully than my brother) ואיפה תואר הפועל עומד במשפט.

קצת a bit, slightly I'm a bit tired. The soup is slightly salty.
במידה fairly, quite, rather, pretty The test was fairly easy.
מאוד very, really, extremely She speaks extremely well.
לגמרי completely, totally, absolutely You're absolutely right.

a bit — מדובר, וכמעט תמיד על משהו לא נעים: a bit cold, a bit expensive, a bit late. על משהו טוב בדרך כלל לא אומרים כך: במקום "a bit good" אומרים quite good.

The film was quite good — "סרט לא רע", אבל לא התלהבות. עם שם תואר שהוא "מלא" ממילא — right, sure, true, impossible — quite פירושו "לגמרי": You're quite right — "אתה צודק לגמרי". I'm not quite sure — "אני לא לגמרי בטוח/ה".

It's rather cold today. The exam was rather difficult. The food was rather good — "והאוכל דווקא התגלה כטוב".

I know him fairly well. pretty — "די" מדובר: It's pretty expensive.

ואילו very לא מתחבר לפועל: לפני הפועל שמים really, ואחרי המושא — very much: I really like this city, I like this city very much.

carefully more carefully most carefully
quickly more quickly most quickly
fast faster fastest
hard harder hardest
early earlier earliest
late later latest
well better best
badly worse worst
far further furthest

משווים עם than: She drives more carefully than her brother. שוויון ואי־שוויון — as … as ו־not as … as, כמו אצל שמות תואר: He doesn't speak French as well as his wife.

אחרי than ו־as בדיבור שמים me, him, her: She sings better than me. קצת מוקפד יותר — עם פועל: than I do, as he does.

בדיבור שומעים לעתים קרובות Can you speak slower? או Come quicker! — הצורה הקצרה במקום more slowly, more quickly.

He opened the door slowly.
באמצע תדירות, already, just, really, almost I really like it. She's already left.
Luckily, nobody was hurt.

She sang beautifully at the concert last night. He slowly opened the door — כך המשפט נשמע קצת ספרותי יותר.

נכון She speaks German well, ולא ✗ She speaks well German.

She works hard.
She hardly works.
The train arrived late.
I haven't seen him lately.

Could you speak more slowly, please?
He drives more carefully than I do.
Who works the hardest in your team?
I don't swim as well as my sister.
The hotel was quite good, but the food was rather disappointing.
Unfortunately, the museum was closed.

✗ The water wasn't enough warm → ✓ The water wasn't warm enough. enough (A2 #13): fast enough, well enough.

The hotel was quite good בפי בריטי? She speaks German?

Could you speak more slowly, please?; She speaks German well.

✗ He speaks well English

✗ I like very much tea

✓ He speaks English well

I like tea very much.

2

very עם פועל

✗ I very like this city

✓ I really like this city / I like this city very much

3

more לכל דבר ו־from במקום than

✗ more fast, ✗ more better → ✓ faster, better. ✗ She drives better from me → ✓ She drives better than me.

✗ She drives more careful than me

✓ She drives more carefully than me

✗ The water wasn't enough warm

✓ The water wasn't warm enough

אם הקול יורד על quite — It was QUITE good, — זה "ככה־ככה, שום דבר מיוחד". אם על שם התואר — It was quite GOOD, — זה שבח: "ממש טוב".

ב־more carefully ההטעמה על תואר הפועל: /mɔː ˈkeəfəli/. more לא מוטעם, וגם than לא: /ðən/.

My sister Lucy and I took our driving tests in the same month, and the results surprised everyone.

Lucy usually learns things faster than I do. She had lessons twice a week and was driving quite well after a month. I was slower. I drove very carefully — too carefully, my instructor said. "You don't have to stop completely at every corner," he told me. "Just drive confidently."

On the day of the test I was extremely nervous, but luckily the examiner was friendly and the roads were fairly quiet. I made one small mistake: I parked rather badly outside the post office. Still, I passed.

Lucy did worse. She was driving too fast on a wet road and didn't see a cyclist in time. She stopped suddenly, and nobody was hurt, but she failed. Unfortunately, she had to wait six weeks for the next test.

The second time, she passed easily. Now she drives better than I do, honestly — more smoothly, more confidently and more often. But she still says that I park more carefully than anyone she knows. And that's quite true.

I learnt to swim quite late, at the age of twelve. My younger brother learnt faster than I did, and he still swims better than me. At first I swam very slowly and rather badly. Luckily, our teacher was extremely patient. Now I swim fairly well, but I don't swim as fast as my brother. Honestly, I don't mind.
