Grammatika

15 min

A2 #13 tunnis ütlesid, kui palju midagi on: a lot of work, a few days, not much time. Nüüd on küsimus teine — milline osa rühmast. „Enamik mu kolleege“, „mitte keegi meist“, „mõlemad vennad“, „mitte kumbki kahest variandist“, „pooled piletid“. Eesti keeles pannakse selline sõna lihtsalt rühma ette, ja rühm on osastavas või seestütlevas käändes: „enamik kolleege“, „enamik kolleegidest“. Inglise keeles on igal osasõnal kaks ehitusviisi, ja nende vahel valimine on tunni peamine reegel.

Osasõnad. Alates „kõik“ kuni „mitte keegi“:

sõna osa näide
all kõik All of my friends came to the party.
most enamik, suurem osa Most of the guests left before midnight.
half pool, pooled Half of the tickets have already gone.
many paljud Many of my colleagues live outside London.
some mõned, osa Some of them work at weekends.
a few mõned, paar A few of us stayed to help.
none mitte ükski, mitte keegi, mitte midagi None of the shops were open.

Kahest inimesest või asjast räägitakse eraldi kolmikuga:

sõna osa näide
both mõlemad Both of my parents are teachers.
either kumbki kahest, ükskõik kumb Either of these days is fine for me.
neither mitte kumbki Neither of the answers is right.

Millal on vaja of-i. Osasõna võib panna otse nimisõna ette: most people, some students, all children. Kui aga jutt on konkreetsest, juba teadaolevast rühmast — the students, my friends, these books, us, them, — tuleb osasõna ja rühma vahele of:

üldiselt — ilma of-ita konkreetne rühm — of-iga
Most people like holidays. Most of the people in my street have a car.
Some students work at night. Some of my students work at night.
All children need sleep. All of us were tired.
No shops are open on Christmas Day. None of the shops were open.

Miks nii: of tähendab siin „hulgast“. „Enamik neist üliõpilastest, kellest me räägime“ — most of the students. Kui konkreetset rühma pole, pole ka kelle hulgast võtta, ja of-i ei panda. Sellest tuleb kontroll: of-i järel seisab kindlasti the, my, these, those või asesõna. Ilma nendeta pole of-i vaja.

Asesõnaga on of vaja alati: all of us, both of them, none of it, most of you.

all, both ja half lubavad endale vabadust: the ja my ees võib of-i ära jätta. all the students = all of the students, both my parents = both of my parents, half the class. Teiste sõnadega nii ei saa: ainult most of the students, some of my friends.

all ja both aluse järel. Need kaks sõna võivad seista ka lause keskel — samas kohas kus sagedusmäärsõnad (A1 #11): põhiverbi ees, kuid be ja abiverbi järel. We all agreed. — „Me kõik olime nõus.“ My parents are both teachers. — „Mu vanemad on mõlemad õpetajad.“ The guests have all gone home.

none ja no. no seisab otse nimisõna ees: No students came. none — of-i ees või täiesti üksi, vastuses: None of the students came. — How many tickets are left? — None. Mõlemas sõnas on eitus juba sees, seepärast on verb nende järel jaatav: None of them came.

Kui inimesi või asju on kolm või rohkem, on vaja all, any, none: None of my three brothers lives here, mitte neither. either ja neither järel ilma of-ita seisab ainsus: either day, neither answer. of-iga — mitmus: neither of the answers.

not … either tähendab sama mis neither ja kõlab kõnes tavalisemalt: I don't like either of them = I like neither of them — „mulle ei meeldi kumbki neist kahest“.

neither-it oled juba kohanud kahes teises rollis: neither … nor (B1 #6) ja Neither do I (B1 #20). Siin on kolmas roll — „mitte kumbki kahest“.

a few ja few, a little ja little. Artikkel pöörab hinnangu ümber. a few (loendatavatega) ja a little (loendamatutega) — „mõned“, „natuke“, ja sellest piisab. Ilma a-ta tähendavad samad sõnad „vähe“, „peaaegu üldse mitte“, ja see on halb.

I've got a few friends in Leeds, so I'm never lonely. mõned — ja see on hea
I've got few friends in Leeds, so I'm often lonely. vähe — kaebus
We've got a little time — let's have a coffee. natuke, aga on
We've got little time — hurry up. peaaegu pole

Kõnes kõlavad few ja little ilma artiklita raamatulikult. Nende asemel öeldakse tavaliselt not many, not much või only a few: I haven't got many friends here. quite a few tähendab aga vastupidi „üsna palju“: Quite a few of my colleagues cycle to work.

Verb. most of, some of, all of, half of järel lähtub verb of-i järel olevast nimisõnast: Most of the students are here, kuid Most of the money was spent. Kui of-i järel on rühma tähistav sõna — class, team, family, — on briti inglise keeles õiged mõlemad arvud: Half of the class has been to Spain (klass kui üks tervik) ja Half of the class have been to Spain (inimesed selles). none of, neither of ja either of järel on samuti õiged mõlemad: None of us is perfect ja None of us are perfect, Neither of them knows ja Neither of them know. Ainsus kõlab rangemalt, ja ametlikus kirjas valitakse see; mitmus on tavaline kõnes. Viga pole kummaski.

Veel näiteid:

Most of my colleagues come to work by train. Enamik mu kolleege sõidab tööle rongiga.
Some of the questions were really difficult. Mõned küsimused olid väga rasked.
Half of the class have been to Spain. Pooled rühmast on Hispaanias käinud.
None of us knew the answer. Keegi meist ei teadnud vastust.
Both of my sisters live abroad. Mõlemad mu õed elavad välismaal.
Monday or Tuesday? Either day is fine. Esmaspäeval või teisipäeval? Kumbki päev sobib.

Nii ei öelda. ✗ all us, ✗ both they → ✓ all of us, both of them. ✗ most the students → ✓ most of the students.

Kontrolli ennast. Kuidas öelda „Enamik mu sõpru elab Londonis“? Mille poolest erineb I have a few friends here lausest I have few friends here? Kuidas öelda „mitte kumbki kahest vastusest pole õige“?

näita vastuseid
Most of my friends live in London; esimeses on sõbrad olemas, ja see on hea, teises on neid vähe — see on kaebus; Neither of the answers is right / Neither answer is right.

Eesti keele kõneleja vead

kirjutatud sinu keele jaoks
1

of seal, kus seda pole vaja

✗ Most of students work

✓ Most students work

(üliõpilased üldiselt) või Most of the students in my group work (konkreetsed). Eesti keeles öeldakse ka üldiselt „enamik üliõpilastest“, ja seestütlev „-st“ toob kaasa of-i. Kuid inglise of nõuab enda järele the, my või asesõna.

2

the most tähenduses „enamik“

✗ The most of people prefer tea

✓ Most people prefer tea

the most on ülivõrre (A2 #8): the most expensive — „kõige kallim“. „Enamik“ ja „kõige rohkem“ tunduvad sugulastena, ja ülivõrdest meelde jäänud the tuleb kaasa.

3

Eitus ka verbis

✗ None of them didn't come → ✓ None of them came. ✗ Neither of us didn't know → ✓ Neither of us knew. Eesti keeles on eitus verbis kohustuslik: „keegi neist ei tulnud“, „kumbki meist ei teadnud“. Inglise keeles eitavad juba none ja neither, ja teine not rikub lause.

4

Ainsuse verb most of järel

✗ Most of my friends lives in Tallinn

✓ Most of my friends live in Tallinn

Eesti keeles on „enamik“ ja „pool“ järel verb tavaliselt ainsuses: „enamik mu sõpru elab Tallinnas“. Inglise keeles otsustab of-i järel olev nimisõna: friends — mitmus.

5

few a few asemel

I have few friends here tähenduses „mul on siin mõned sõbrad“ — lause on õige, kuid tähendab muud: „sõpru on vähe“, kaebust üksinduse üle. Eesti keeles on „mõned“ ja „vähe“ eri sõnad, inglise keeles hoiab vahet üks lühike artikkel, mida eesti keeles pole ja mis kaob kergesti.

Hääldus

4 min

of on nendes ühendites rõhuta — /əv/, kaashääliku ees sageli lihtsalt /ə/. Rõhk langeb osasõnale ja nimisõnale: MOST of the STUdents /ˈməʊst əv ðə ˈstjuːdnts/, SOME of them /ˈsʌm əv ðəm/. all of us sulandub üheks sõnaks: /ˈɔːl əv əs/.

Ära neela a-d ühendis a few. /ə ˈfjuː/ versus /fjuː/: üks nõrk häälik eristab „mõned“ ja „vähe“. Sama kehtib a little /ə ˈlɪtl/ kohta.

Tekst

5 min

There are twelve of us in our Tuesday evening Spanish class, and last week our teacher gave us a short survey about our lives. Here are the results.

Most of us work full-time, and a few work part-time. None of us are students any more — the youngest person in the group is twenty-nine. Half of the class have been to Spain at least once, but only two people have lived there: Paul and Ruth. Both of them spent a year in Madrid, and neither of them wants to go back to an office job.

All of us have busy evenings, so homework is a problem. Some people do it on the train in the morning, and some hardly do it at all. Few of us practise speaking outside the class, and that's the biggest weakness of the group. We have a little time before the exam in June, so our teacher has a plan: every week, two of us are going to meet for a coffee and speak only Spanish. We'll meet on Mondays or Wednesdays — either day is fine for most people.

I asked my partner, Jenny, if she was nervous about the exam. "Not really," she said. "Most exams are easier than people think. And all of my friends who took it last year passed."
