A2 #13'te bir şeyin ne kadar olduğunu söylüyordunuz: a lot of work, a few days, not much time.

Oran kelimeleri. “Hepsi”nden “hiçbiri”ne:

kelime oran örnek
all hepsi, bütün All of my friends came to the party.
most çoğu, büyük kısmı Most of the guests left before midnight.
half yarısı Half of the tickets have already gone.
many birçoğu Many of my colleagues live outside London.
some bazıları, bir kısmı Some of them work at weekends.
a few birkaçı A few of us stayed to help.
none hiçbiri, hiç kimse, hiçbir şey None of the shops were open.

both ikisi de Both of my parents are teachers.
either ikisinden herhangi biri Either of these days is fine for me.
neither ikisinden hiçbiri Neither of the answers is right.

of ne zaman gerekir. Oran kelimesi doğrudan ismin önüne konabilir: most people, some students, all children. Böyle genel olarak insanlardan ve şeylerden söz edilir — dünyadaki “çoğu insan”, kendi başına “bütün çocuklar”. Söz belirli, bilinen bir gruptan ediliyorsa — the students, my friends, these books, us, them — oran kelimesiyle grup arasına of girer:

genel — of'suz belirli grup — of ile
Most people like holidays. Most of the people in my street have a car.
Some students work at night. Some of my students work at night.
All children need sleep. All of us were tired.
No shops are open on Christmas Day. None of the shops were open.

Neden böyle: of burada “arasından” demektir. “Sözünü ettiğimiz öğrencilerin arasından çoğu” — most of the students. Buradan bir sınama çıkar: of'tan sonra mutlaka the, my, these, those ya da bir zamir gelir. Onlar yoksa of gerekmez.

Zamirle of her zaman gerekir: all of us, both of them, none of it, most of you.

all, both ve half'ın bir serbestliği var: the ve my'dan önce of atılabilir. all the students = all of the students, both my parents = both of my parents, half the class. Öteki kelimelerde bu olmaz: yalnızca most of the students, some of my friends.

Özneden sonra all ve both. We all agreed. — “Hepimiz kabul ettik.” My parents are both teachers. — “Annemle babamın ikisi de öğretmen.” The guests have all gone home.

none ve no. no doğrudan ismin önünde durur: No students came. none — of'tan önce ya da tek başına, cevapta: None of the students came. — How many tickets are left? — None. İki kelime de olumsuzluğu zaten taşır, bu yüzden ardından gelen fiil olumludur: None of them came.

Üç ve daha fazlası için all, any, none gerekir: None of my three brothers lives here, neither değil. of'suz either ve neither'dan sonra tekil gelir: either day, neither answer. of ile — çoğul: neither of the answers.

not … either, neither ile aynı anlamdadır ve konuşmada daha alışılmış duyulur: I don't like either of them = I like neither of them — “ikisini de beğenmiyorum”.

neither'ı iki başka görevde gördünüz: neither … nor (B1 #6) ve Neither do I (B1 #20). Burada üçüncü görevi — “ikisinden hiçbiri”.

a few ile few, a little ile little. Artikel değerlendirmeyi tersine çevirir. a few (sayılabilenle) ve a little (sayılamayanla) — “birkaç”, “biraz”, ve bu yeterlidir. a olmadan aynı kelimeler “az”, “neredeyse hiç” demektir ve bu kötüdür.

I've got a few friends in Leeds, so I'm never lonely. birkaç — ve bu iyi
I've got few friends in Leeds, so I'm often lonely. az — şikâyet
We've got a little time — let's have a coffee. biraz, ama var
We've got little time — hurry up. neredeyse hiç yok

Konuşmada artikelsiz few ve little kitabi duyulur. Onların yerine genellikle not many, not much ya da only a few denir: I haven't got many friends here. quite a few ise tersine “epeyce”, “bir hayli” demektir: Quite a few of my colleagues cycle to work.

Fiil. most of, some of, all of, half of'tan sonra fiil of'tan sonraki isme bakar: Most of the students are here, ama Most of the money was spent. of'tan sonra bir topluluk kelimesi varsa — class, team, family — İngiliz İngilizcesinde iki sayı da doğrudur: Half of the class has been to Spain (sınıf bir bütün olarak) ve Half of the class have been to Spain (içindeki insanlar). none of, neither of ve either of'tan sonra da ikisi de doğrudur: None of us is perfect ve None of us are perfect, Neither of them knows ve Neither of them know.

Most of my colleagues come to work by train. İş arkadaşlarımın çoğu işe trenle geliyor.
Some of the questions were really difficult. Soruların bazıları gerçekten zordu.
Half of the class have been to Spain. Sınıfın yarısı İspanya'ya gitmiş.
None of us knew the answer. Hiçbirimiz cevabı bilmiyorduk.
Both of my sisters live abroad. İki kız kardeşim de yurt dışında yaşıyor.
Monday or Tuesday? Either day is fine. Pazartesi mi, salı mı? İkisi de olur.

Böyle söylenmez. ✗ all us, ✗ both they → ✓ all of us, both of them. ✗ most the students → ✓ most of the students.

Kendinizi sınayın. “Arkadaşlarımın çoğu Londra'da yaşıyor” nasıl söylenir? I have a few friends here ile I have few friends here arasındaki fark ne? “İki cevabın hiçbiri doğru değil” nasıl söylenir?

cevapları göster
Most of my friends live in London; birincisinde arkadaşlar var ve bu iyi, ikincisinde az — bu bir şikâyet; Neither of the answers is right / Neither answer is right.

Türkçe konuşanların hataları

diliniz için yazıldı
1

Gereksiz of

✗ Most of students work

✓ Most students work

(genel olarak öğrenciler) ya da Most of the students in my group work (belirli öğrenciler). Türkçede “öğrencilerin çoğu” iki anlamda da söylenir ve tamlama of diye aktarılır. Ama İngilizcede of'tan sonra the, my ya da bir zamir gelmelidir.

2

Çift olumsuzluk

✗ None of them didn't come → ✓ None of them came. ✗ Neither of us didn't know → ✓ Neither of us knew. Türkçede “hiçbiri gelmedi”, “ikimiz de bilmiyorduk” — fiil olumsuz olmak zorundadır. İngilizcede none ve neither olumsuzluğu zaten taşır; ikinci not cümleyi bozar.

3

Üç ve daha fazlası için neither

✗ Neither of my three brothers drives

✓ None of my three brothers drives

4

Oran kelimesinden sonra tekil isim

✗ I've got a few friend here

✗ both my sister

✓ a few friends

both my sisters. Türkçede “birkaç arkadaş”, “iki kız kardeşim” — sayı ve miktar kelimesinden sonra isim tekil kalır. İngilizcede a few, many, most, both'tan sonra sayılabilen isim çoğuldur.

5

a few yerine few

I have few friends here, “burada birkaç arkadaşım var” anlamında — cümle doğrudur, ama başka bir şey söyler: “arkadaşım az”, yalnızlıktan şikâyet.

Telaffuz

4 dk

Bu kalıplarda of vurgusuzdur — /əv/, ünsüzden önce çoğu zaman yalnızca /ə/. Vurgu oran kelimesine ve isme düşer: MOST of the STUdents /ˈməʊst əv ðə ˈstjuːdnts/, SOME of them /ˈsʌm əv ðəm/. all of us tek kelime gibi kaynaşır: /ˈɔːl əv əs/.

a few'daki a'yı yutmayın.

Metin

There are twelve of us in our Tuesday evening Spanish class, and last week our teacher gave us a short survey about our lives. Here are the results.

Most of us work full-time, and a few work part-time. None of us are students any more — the youngest person in the group is twenty-nine. Half of the class have been to Spain at least once, but only two people have lived there: Paul and Ruth. Both of them spent a year in Madrid, and neither of them wants to go back to an office job.

All of us have busy evenings, so homework is a problem. Some people do it on the train in the morning, and some hardly do it at all. Few of us practise speaking outside the class, and that's the biggest weakness of the group. We have a little time before the exam in June, so our teacher has a plan: every week, two of us are going to meet for a coffee and speak only Spanish. We'll meet on Mondays or Wednesdays — either day is fine for most people.

I asked my partner, Jenny, if she was nervous about the exam. "Not really," she said. "Most exams are easier than people think. And all of my friends who took it last year passed."
