A2-tason oppitunnilla 13 kerroit, kuinka paljon jotakin on: a lot of work, a few days, not much time. Nyt kysymys on toinen — kuinka suuri osa ryhmästä. ”Suurin osa kollegoistani”, ”kukaan meistä”, ”molemmat veljet”, ”ei kumpikaan kahdesta vaihtoehdosta”, ”puolet lipuista”. Suomessa tällainen sana tulee ryhmän eteen, ja ryhmä saa usein elatiivin: ”kollegoistani”, ”meistä”, ”lipuista”. Englannissa jokaisella osuutta ilmaisevalla sanalla on kaksi rakennetta, ja niiden välinen valinta on oppitunnin tärkein sääntö.

Osuussanat. Sanasta ”kaikki” sanaan ”ei kukaan”:

sana osuus esimerkki
all kaikki All of my friends came to the party.
most useimmat, suurin osa Most of the guests left before midnight.
half puolet Half of the tickets have already gone.
many monet Many of my colleagues live outside London.
some jotkut, osa Some of them work at weekends.
a few muutama A few of us stayed to help.
none ei yksikään, ei kukaan, ei mitään None of the shops were open.

Kahdesta ihmisestä tai asiasta puhutaan omalla kolmikolla:

sana osuus esimerkki
both molemmat Both of my parents are teachers.
either kumpi tahansa kahdesta Either of these days is fine for me.
neither ei kumpikaan kahdesta Neither of the answers is right.

Milloin tarvitaan of. Osuussanan voi panna suoraan substantiivin eteen: most people, some students, all children. Näin puhutaan ihmisistä ja asioista yleensä — ”useimmat ihmiset” maailmassa, ”kaikki lapset” sinänsä. Jos taas puhutaan tietystä, jo tunnetusta ryhmästä — the students, my friends, these books, us, them —, osuussanan ja ryhmän väliin tulee of:

yleensä — ilman of-sanaa tietty ryhmä — of-sanalla
Most people like holidays. Most of the people in my street have a car.
Some students work at night. Some of my students work at night.
All children need sleep. All of us were tired.
No shops are open on Christmas Day. None of the shops were open.

Miksi näin: of tarkoittaa tässä ”joukosta”. ”Suurin osa niistä opiskelijoista, joista puhumme” — most of the students. Tästä tarkistus: of-sanan jälkeen on aina the, my, these, those tai pronomini. Ilman niitä of-sanaa ei tarvita.

Pronominin kanssa of tarvitaan aina: all of us, both of them, none of it, most of you.

Sanoilla all, both ja half on vapaus: the- ja my-sanojen edestä of voi jäädä pois. all the students = all of the students, both my parents = both of my parents, half the class. Muilla sanoilla niin ei voi: vain most of the students, some of my friends.

all ja both subjektin jälkeen. We all agreed. — ”Me kaikki olimme samaa mieltä”. My parents are both teachers. — ”Vanhempani ovat molemmat opettajia”. The guests have all gone home.

none ja no. no tulee suoraan substantiivin eteen: No students came. none — of-sanan eteen tai aivan yksin, vastauksessa: None of the students came. — How many tickets are left? — None. Kumpikin sana sisältää jo kiellon, siksi niiden jälkeen verbi on myönteinen: None of them came.

Jos ihmisiä tai asioita on kolme tai enemmän, tarvitaan all, any, none: None of my three brothers lives here, ei neither. Sanojen either ja neither jälkeen ilman of-sanaa tulee yksikkö: either day, neither answer. of-sanan kanssa — monikko: neither of the answers.

not … either tarkoittaa samaa kuin neither ja kuulostaa puheessa tavallisemmalta: I don't like either of them = I like neither of them — ”en pidä kummastakaan”.

neither on tullut vastaan jo kahdessa muussa roolissa: neither … nor (B1 #6) ja Neither do I (B1 #20). Tässä on kolmas rooli — ”ei kumpikaan kahdesta”.

a few ja few, a little ja little. Artikkeli kääntää arvion. a few (laskettavien kanssa) ja a little (ei-laskettavien kanssa) — ”muutama”, ”hieman”, ja se riittää. Ilman a-artikkelia samat sanat tarkoittavat ”harva”, ”vähän”, ”tuskin lainkaan”, ja se on huono asia.

I've got a few friends in Leeds, so I'm never lonely. muutama — ja se on hyvä
I've got few friends in Leeds, so I'm often lonely. vähän — valitus
We've got a little time — let's have a coffee. hieman, mutta on
We've got little time — hurry up. tuskin lainkaan

Puheessa few ja little ilman artikkelia kuulostavat kirjakielisiltä. Niiden sijaan sanotaan tavallisesti not many, not much tai only a few: I haven't got many friends here. quite a few taas tarkoittaa päinvastoin ”aika monta”: Quite a few of my colleagues cycle to work.

Verbi. Rakenteiden most of, some of, all of, half of jälkeen verbi katsoo of-sanan jälkeistä substantiivia: Most of the students are here, mutta Most of the money was spent. Jos of-sanan jälkeen on ryhmää tarkoittava sana — class, team, family —, brittienglannissa kumpikin luku on oikein: Half of the class has been to Spain (luokka yhtenä kokonaisuutena) ja Half of the class have been to Spain (sen ihmiset). Myös rakenteiden none of, neither of ja either of jälkeen kumpikin on oikein: None of us is perfect ja None of us are perfect, Neither of them knows ja Neither of them know.

Most of my colleagues come to work by train. Suurin osa kollegoistani kulkee töihin junalla.
Some of the questions were really difficult. Jotkut kysymyksistä olivat todella vaikeita.
Half of the class have been to Spain. Puolet ryhmästä on käynyt Espanjassa.
None of us knew the answer. Kukaan meistä ei tiennyt vastausta.
Both of my sisters live abroad. Molemmat siskoni asuvat ulkomailla.
Monday or Tuesday? Either day is fine. Maanantaina vai tiistaina? Kumpi tahansa päivä käy.

Näin ei sanota. ✗ all us, ✗ both they → ✓ all of us, both of them. ✗ most the students → ✓ most of the students.

Testaa itsesi. Miten sanotaan ”Suurin osa ystävistäni asuu Lontoossa”? Mikä ero on lauseilla I have a few friends here ja I have few friends here?

Most of my friends live in London; ensimmäisessä ystäviä on, ja se on hyvä, toisessa heitä on vähän — se on valitus; Neither of the answers is right / Neither answer is right.

Suomenkielisten virheet

kirjoitettu omalle kielellesi
1

of sielläkin, missä sitä ei tarvita

✗ Most of students work

✓ Most students work

(opiskelijat yleensä) tai Most of the students in my group work (tietyt). Suomessa sanotaan yleisestäkin ”suurin osa opiskelijoista”, ja elatiivin -sta muuttuu helposti of-sanaksi. Englannin of vaatii kuitenkin peräänsä the, my tai pronominin.

2

the most merkityksessä ”useimmat”

✗ The most of people prefer tea

✓ Most people prefer tea

the most on superlatiivi (A2 #8): the most expensive — ”kallein”.

3

Kielto myös verbiin

✗ None of them didn't come → ✓ None of them came. ✗ Neither of us didn't know → ✓ Neither of us knew.

4

Yksikkö most of -rakenteen jälkeen

✗ Most of my friends lives in Helsinki

✓ Most of my friends live in Helsinki

Suomessa verbi on rakenteiden ”suurin osa” ja ”puolet” jälkeen yksikössä: ”suurin osa ystävistäni asuu Helsingissä”. Englannissa ratkaisee of-sanan jälkeinen substantiivi: friends — monikko.

5

few sanan a few sijaan

I have few friends here merkityksessä ”minulla on täällä muutama ystävä” — lause on oikein, mutta tarkoittaa muuta: ”ystäviä on vähän”, valitusta yksinäisyydestä. Suomen ”vähän aikaa” voi olla kumpaa tahansa — a little time tai little time —, ja eron ratkaisee yhteys.

4 min

of on näissä rakenteissa painoton — /əv/, ja konsonantin edessä usein pelkkä /ə/. Paino on osuussanalla ja substantiivilla: MOST of the STUdents /ˈməʊst əv ðə ˈstjuːdnts/, SOME of them /ˈsʌm əv ðəm/. all of us sulautuu yhdeksi sanaksi: /ˈɔːl əv əs/.

Älä niele a-sanaa ilmauksessa a few. /ə ˈfjuː/ vastaan /fjuː/: yksi heikko äänne erottaa ”muutaman” ”vähästä”. Sama koskee ilmausta a little /ə ˈlɪtl/.

Teksti

There are twelve of us in our Tuesday evening Spanish class, and last week our teacher gave us a short survey about our lives. Here are the results.

Most of us work full-time, and a few work part-time. None of us are students any more — the youngest person in the group is twenty-nine. Half of the class have been to Spain at least once, but only two people have lived there: Paul and Ruth. Both of them spent a year in Madrid, and neither of them wants to go back to an office job.

All of us have busy evenings, so homework is a problem. Some people do it on the train in the morning, and some hardly do it at all. Few of us practise speaking outside the class, and that's the biggest weakness of the group. We have a little time before the exam in June, so our teacher has a plan: every week, two of us are going to meet for a coffee and speak only Spanish. We'll meet on Mondays or Wednesdays — either day is fine for most people.

I asked my partner, Jenny, if she was nervous about the exam. "Not really," she said. "Most exams are easier than people think. And all of my friends who took it last year passed."

Malli

There are fifteen people in my team at work. Most of us live in the city, but a few of my colleagues come in from the countryside. Half of the team have children. None of us are older than fifty. Both of our managers speak French, and neither of them drives to work. Few of us take a proper lunch break — we're always too busy.
