In A2 #13 dicevi quanto c'è di qualcosa: a lot of work, a few days, not much time.

I quantificatori. Da «tutti» a «nessuno»:

parola parte esempio
all tutti, tutto All of my friends came to the party.
most la maggior parte Most of the guests left before midnight.
half metà Half of the tickets have already gone.
many molti Many of my colleagues live outside London.
some alcuni, una parte Some of them work at weekends.
a few alcuni, qualcuno A few of us stayed to help.
none nessuno, niente None of the shops were open.

parola parte esempio
both tutti e due, entrambi Both of my parents are teachers.
either l'uno o l'altro dei due Either of these days is fine for me.
neither nessuno dei due Neither of the answers is right.

Quando ci vuole of. La parola di quantità può stare direttamente davanti al nome: most people, some students, all children.

in generale — senza of un gruppo preciso — con of
Most people like holidays. Most of the people in my street have a car.
Some students work at night. Some of my students work at night.
All children need sleep. All of us were tired.
No shops are open on Christmas Day. None of the shops were open.

Da qui la verifica: dopo of ci sono sempre the, my, these, those o un pronome. Senza di loro of non serve.

Con un pronome of ci vuole sempre: all of us, both of them, none of it, most of you.

all, both e half si concedono una libertà: davanti a the e my la parola of si può omettere. all the students = all of the students, both my parents = both of my parents, half the class. Con le altre parole non si può: solo most of the students, some of my friends.

all e both dopo il soggetto. We all agreed. — «Eravamo tutti d'accordo». My parents are both teachers. The guests have all gone home.

none e no. no sta direttamente davanti al nome: No students came. none — davanti a of o da solo, in una risposta: None of the students came. — How many tickets are left? — None.

Se le persone o le cose sono tre o più, ci vogliono all, any, none: None of my three brothers lives here, non neither. Dopo either e neither senza of c'è il singolare: either day, neither answer. Con of — il plurale: neither of the answers.

not … either vuol dire lo stesso di neither e nella conversazione suona più naturale: I don't like either of them = I like neither of them — «non mi piace nessuno dei due».

neither l'hai già incontrato in altri due ruoli: neither … nor (B1 #6) e Neither do I (B1 #20).

a few e few, a little e little.

I've got a few friends in Leeds, so I'm never lonely. alcuni — ed è una cosa buona
I've got few friends in Leeds, so I'm often lonely. pochi — un lamento
We've got a little time — let's have a coffee. un po', ma c'è
We've got little time — hurry up. quasi niente

Nella conversazione few e little senza articolo suonano libreschi. Al loro posto di solito si dice not many, not much o only a few: I haven't got many friends here. E quite a few, al contrario, vuol dire «parecchi»: Quite a few of my colleagues cycle to work.

Il verbo. Dopo most of, some of, all of, half of il verbo si accorda con il nome che segue of: Most of the students are here, ma Most of the money was spent. Se dopo of c'è un nome collettivo — class, team, family —, nell'inglese britannico vanno bene tutti e due i numeri: Half of the class has been to Spain (la classe come un tutto unico) e Half of the class have been to Spain (le persone che ne fanno parte). Anche dopo none of, neither of e either of vanno bene tutti e due: None of us is perfect e None of us are perfect, Neither of them knows e Neither of them know.

Altri esempi:

Most of my colleagues come to work by train.
Some of the questions were really difficult. Alcune domande erano davvero difficili.
Half of the class have been to Spain. Metà della classe è stata in Spagna.
None of us knew the answer. Nessuno di noi sapeva la risposta.
Both of my sisters live abroad.
Monday or Tuesday? Either day is fine. Lunedì o martedì? Va bene l'uno o l'altro.

Così non si dice. ✗ all us, ✗ both they → ✓ all of us, both of them. ✗ most the students → ✓ most of the students.

Che differenza c'è tra I have a few friends here e I have few friends here?

Most of my friends live in London; nella prima gli amici ci sono, ed è una cosa buona, nella seconda sono pochi — è un lamento; Neither of the answers is right / Neither answer is right.

Errori tipici degli italofoni

adattato alla tua lingua
1

✗ The most of people prefer tea → ✓ Most people prefer tea. ✗ The half of the tickets → ✓ Half of the tickets o Half the tickets. Ma the most è il superlativo (A2 #8): the most expensive — «il più caro». most e half vanno senza the.

2

«Delle», «dei» quando si parla in generale

Most of the people like holidays è corretto, ma vuol dire «la maggior parte di quelle persone», di un gruppo preciso. Per la gente in generale: Most people like holidays, senza of e senza the.

3

«Nessuno di noi» con nobody

✗ Nobody of us knew the answer

✓ None of us knew the answer

Davanti a of ci vuole none.

4

Due negazioni dopo il verbo

✗ I didn't see none of them

✓ I didn't see any of them

o I saw none of them.

5

«Nessuno dei due» con none

✗ None of the two answers is right

✓ Neither of the answers is right

Pronuncia

4 min

of in queste costruzioni è atono — /əv/, e davanti a consonante spesso solo /ə/. L'accento cade sulla parola di quantità e sul nome: MOST of the STUdents /ˈməʊst əv ðə ˈstjuːdnts/, SOME of them /ˈsʌm əv ðəm/. all of us si fonde in una parola sola: /ˈɔːl əv əs/.

Testo

There are twelve of us in our Tuesday evening Spanish class, and last week our teacher gave us a short survey about our lives. Here are the results.

Most of us work full-time, and a few work part-time. None of us are students any more — the youngest person in the group is twenty-nine. Half of the class have been to Spain at least once, but only two people have lived there: Paul and Ruth. Both of them spent a year in Madrid, and neither of them wants to go back to an office job.

All of us have busy evenings, so homework is a problem. Some people do it on the train in the morning, and some hardly do it at all. Few of us practise speaking outside the class, and that's the biggest weakness of the group. We have a little time before the exam in June, so our teacher has a plan: every week, two of us are going to meet for a coffee and speak only Spanish. We'll meet on Mondays or Wednesdays — either day is fine for most people.

I asked my partner, Jenny, if she was nervous about the exam. "Not really," she said. "Most exams are easier than people think. And all of my friends who took it last year passed."
