La A2 #13 spuneai cât de mult din ceva: a lot of work, a few days, not much time.

all toți, toate, tot All of my friends came to the party.
most majoritatea, cei mai mulți Most of the guests left before midnight.
half jumătate Half of the tickets have already gone.
many mulți Many of my colleagues live outside London.
some unii, o parte Some of them work at weekends.
a few câțiva A few of us stayed to help.
none niciunul, nimeni, nimic None of the shops were open.

both amândoi, ambii Both of my parents are teachers.
either oricare dintre cei doi Either of these days is fine for me.
neither niciunul dintre cei doi Neither of the answers is right.

Când trebuie of. Cuvântul de proporție poate sta direct înaintea substantivului: most people, some students, all children. Dacă însă e vorba de un grup anume, deja cunoscut — the students, my friends, these books, us, them —, între cuvântul de proporție și grup apare of:

în general — fără of un grup anume — cu of
Most people like holidays. Most of the people in my street have a car.
Some students work at night. Some of my students work at night.
All children need sleep. All of us were tired.
No shops are open on Christmas Day. None of the shops were open.

De ce așa: of are aici sensul lui „dintre”. „Majoritatea dintre studenții despre care vorbim” — most of the students. De aici verificarea: după of stă obligatoriu the, my, these, those sau un pronume. Fără ele of nu trebuie.

Cu pronumele of trebuie întotdeauna: all of us, both of them, none of it, most of you.

all, both și half au o libertate: înaintea lui the și my cuvântul of poate lipsi. all the students = all of the students, both my parents = both of my parents, half the class. La celelalte cuvinte nu se poate: doar most of the students, some of my friends.

all și both după subiect. We all agreed. — „Am fost toți de acord”. My parents are both teachers. — „Părinții mei sunt amândoi profesori”. The guests have all gone home.

none și no. no stă direct înaintea substantivului: No students came. none — înaintea lui of sau singur, în răspuns: None of the students came. — How many tickets are left? — None. Ambele cuvinte poartă deja negația, de aceea verbul de după ele e afirmativ: None of them came.

Dacă oamenii sau lucrurile sunt trei sau mai multe, trebuie all, any, none: None of my three brothers lives here, nu neither. După either și neither fără of vine singularul: either day, neither answer. Cu of — pluralul: neither of the answers.

not … either înseamnă același lucru ca neither și în conversație sună mai obișnuit: I don't like either of them = I like neither of them — „nu-mi place niciunul dintre cei doi”.

Pe neither l-ai întâlnit deja în alte două roluri: neither … nor (B1 #6) și Neither do I (B1 #20). Aici e al treilea rol — „niciunul dintre cei doi”.

a few și few, a little și little.

I've got a few friends in Leeds, so I'm never lonely. câțiva — și e bine
I've got few friends in Leeds, so I'm often lonely. puțini — o plângere
We've got a little time — let's have a coffee. un pic, dar avem
We've got little time — hurry up. aproape deloc

În conversație few și little fără articol sună livresc. În locul lor se spune de obicei not many, not much sau only a few: I haven't got many friends here. Iar quite a few înseamnă, dimpotrivă, „destul de mulți”: Quite a few of my colleagues cycle to work.

Verbul. După most of, some of, all of, half of verbul se uită la substantivul de după of: Most of the students are here, dar Most of the money was spent. Dacă după of stă un cuvânt care numește un grup — class, team, family —, în engleza britanică sunt corecte ambele numere: Half of the class has been to Spain (clasa ca întreg) și Half of the class have been to Spain (oamenii din ea). După none of, neither of și either of sunt corecte tot ambele: None of us is perfect și None of us are perfect, Neither of them knows și Neither of them know.

Most of my colleagues come to work by train.
Some of the questions were really difficult. Unele întrebări au fost foarte grele.
Half of the class have been to Spain. Jumătate din grupă au fost în Spania.
None of us knew the answer. Niciunul dintre noi nu știa răspunsul.
Both of my sisters live abroad. Amândouă surorile mele locuiesc în străinătate.
Monday or Tuesday? Either day is fine. Luni sau marți? Oricare zi e bună.

Așa nu se spune. ✗ all us, ✗ both they → ✓ all of us, both of them. ✗ most the students → ✓ most of the students.

Verifică-te. Cum spui „Majoritatea prietenilor mei locuiesc la Londra”? Prin ce diferă I have a few friends here de I have few friends here? Cum spui „niciunul dintre cele două răspunsuri nu e corect”?

arată răspunsurile
Most of my friends live in London; în prima prieteni sunt, și e bine, în a doua sunt puțini — e o plângere; Neither of the answers is right / Neither answer is right.

Greșelile vorbitorilor de limba română

adaptat pentru limba ta
1

of acolo unde nu trebuie

„Majoritatea studenților lucrează” → ✗ Most of students work → ✓ Most students work (studenții în general) sau Most of the students in my group work (unii anume).

2

„Din”, „dintre” traduse cu from

„Unii dintre prietenii mei”, „mulți dintre noi” → ✗ Some from my friends, ✗ Many from us → ✓ Some of my friends, Many of us. Ca la superlativ (A2 #8): partea dintr-un grup se spune cu of, nu cu from.

3

„Cei mai mulți” cu the

„Cei mai mulți oameni preferă ceaiul” → ✗ The most people prefer tea, ✗ The most of people prefer tea → ✓ Most people prefer tea. „Cei mai mulți” seamănă cu superlativul, iar the most chiar e superlativ (A2 #8): the most expensive — „cel mai scump”. În sensul „majoritatea” se spune most, fără the.

4

Negația dublă

„Niciunul dintre ei n-a venit” → ✗ None of them didn't come → ✓ None of them came. ✗ Neither of us didn't know → ✓ Neither of us knew.

5

„Niciunul” pentru doi și pentru mai mulți

✗ None of my parents drives → ✓ Neither of my parents drives. ✗ Neither of my three brothers drives → ✓ None of my three brothers drives.

6

few în loc de a few

I have few friends here în sensul „am câțiva prieteni aici” e o frază corectă, dar înseamnă altceva: „am puțini prieteni”, o plângere.

4 min

of din aceste construcții e neaccentuat — /əv/, iar înaintea unei consoane adesea doar /ə/. Accentul cade pe cuvântul de proporție și pe substantiv: MOST of the STUdents /ˈməʊst əv ðə ˈstjuːdnts/, SOME of them /ˈsʌm əv ðəm/. all of us se leagă într-un singur cuvânt: /ˈɔːl əv əs/.

La fel cu a little /ə ˈlɪtl/.

none rimează cu one și sun: /nʌn/, nu „non”. both — /bəʊθ/, cu /θ/ la sfârșit, ca în think. either și neither se pronunță în două feluri (B1 #6): /ˈaɪðə/ sau /ˈiːðə/, /ˈnaɪðə/ sau /ˈniːðə/.

În half litera l nu se citește: /hɑːf/, ca în calm și walk.

Text

5 min

There are twelve of us in our Tuesday evening Spanish class, and last week our teacher gave us a short survey about our lives. Here are the results.

Most of us work full-time, and a few work part-time. None of us are students any more — the youngest person in the group is twenty-nine. Half of the class have been to Spain at least once, but only two people have lived there: Paul and Ruth. Both of them spent a year in Madrid, and neither of them wants to go back to an office job.

All of us have busy evenings, so homework is a problem. Some people do it on the train in the morning, and some hardly do it at all. Few of us practise speaking outside the class, and that's the biggest weakness of the group. We have a little time before the exam in June, so our teacher has a plan: every week, two of us are going to meet for a coffee and speak only Spanish. We'll meet on Mondays or Wednesdays — either day is fine for most people.

I asked my partner, Jenny, if she was nervous about the exam. "Not really," she said. "Most exams are easier than people think. And all of my friends who took it last year passed."

There are fifteen people in my team at work. Most of us live in the city, but a few of my colleagues come in from the countryside. Half of the team have children. None of us are older than fifty. Both of our managers speak French, and neither of them drives to work. Few of us take a proper lunch break — we're always too busy.
