|---|---|---|
| all | ทั้งหมด, ทุกคน | All of my friends came to the party. |
| most | ส่วนใหญ่ | Most of the guests left before midnight. |
| half | ครึ่งหนึ่ง | Half of the tickets have already gone. |
| many | หลายคน, หลายอย่าง | Many of my colleagues live outside London. |
| some | บางคน, บางส่วน | Some of them work at weekends. |
| a few | สองสามคน, จำนวนหนึ่ง | A few of us stayed to help. |
| none | ไม่มีสักคน, ไม่มีเลย | None of the shops were open. |
|---|---|---|
| both | ทั้งสอง | Both of my parents are teachers. |
| either | อันไหนก็ได้ในสองอัน | Either of these days is fine for me. |
| neither | ไม่ใช่ทั้งสอง, ไม่มีสักอันในสองอัน | Neither of the answers is right. |
เมื่อไหร่ต้องมี of วางคำบอกส่วนตรงหน้าคำนามได้เลย: most people, some students, all children แบบนี้พูดถึงคนและสิ่งของโดยทั่วไป — “คนส่วนใหญ่” ในโลกนี้ “เด็กทุกคน” ในฐานะเด็ก แต่ถ้าพูดถึง กลุ่มที่เฉพาะเจาะจงซึ่งรู้กันอยู่แล้ว — the students, my friends, these books, us, them — ระหว่างคำบอกส่วนกับกลุ่มต้องมี of:
|---|---|
| Most people like holidays. | Most of the people in my street have a car. |
| Some students work at night. | Some of my students work at night. |
| All children need sleep. | All of us were tired. |
| No shops are open on Christmas Day. | None of the shops were open. |
กับสรรพนามต้องมี of เสมอ: all of us, both of them, none of it, most of you
all, both และ half มีข้อยกเว้น: หน้า the และ my ละ of ได้ all the students = all of the students, both my parents = both of my parents, half the class คำอื่น ทำแบบนี้ไม่ได้: ต้องเป็น most of the students, some of my friends เท่านั้น
My parents are both teachers. The guests have all gone home.
none และ no no อยู่ตรงหน้าคำนาม: No students came. none อยู่หน้า of หรืออยู่โดด ๆ ในคำตอบ: None of the students came. — How many tickets are left? — None.
สองหรือมากกว่า both, either, neither ใช้พูดถึงสองอย่างเท่านั้น ถ้าคนหรือสิ่งของมีสามขึ้นไป ใช้ all, any, none: None of my three brothers lives here ไม่ใช่ neither หลัง either และ neither ที่ไม่มี of ใช้เอกพจน์: either day, neither answer ถ้ามี of — ใช้พหูพจน์: neither of the answers
I don't like either of them = I like neither of them — “ฉันไม่ชอบทั้งสองอย่าง”
a few กับ few, a little กับ little คำนำหน้านามพลิกความหมายจากดีเป็นไม่ดี a few (กับนาม นับได้) และ a little (กับนามนับไม่ได้) — “สองสาม”, “นิดหน่อย” และเท่านี้ก็พอ ถ้าไม่มี a คำเดียวกัน จะแปลว่า “น้อย”, “แทบไม่มี” และนั่นไม่ดี
| I've got a few friends in Leeds, so I'm never lonely. |
| I've got few friends in Leeds, so I'm often lonely. |
| We've got a little time — let's have a coffee. |
| We've got little time — hurry up.
ในภาษาพูด few และ little ที่ไม่มีคำนำหน้านามฟังเป็นภาษาหนังสือ ส่วนใหญ่จึงพูดว่า not many, not much หรือ only a few แทน: I haven't got many friends here. Quite a few of my colleagues cycle to work.
กริยา หลัง most of, some of, all of, half of กริยาดูที่คำนามหลัง of: Most of the students are here แต่ Most of the money was spent ถ้าหลัง of เป็นคำที่หมายถึงกลุ่ม — class, team, family — ในภาษาอังกฤษแบบบริติชใช้ได้ทั้งเอกพจน์และพหูพจน์: Half of the class has been to Spain Half of the class have been to Spain (คนในกลุ่ม) หลัง none of, neither of และ either of ก็ถูกทั้งสองแบบ: None of us is perfect และ None of us are perfect, Neither of them knows และ Neither of them know เอกพจน์ฟังเป็นทางการกว่า และในจดหมายทางการจะเลือก แบบนี้; พหูพจน์มักใช้ในภาษาพูด ไม่มีแบบไหนผิด
| Most of my colleagues come to work by train. |
| Some of the questions were really difficult. |
| Half of the class have been to Spain. |
| None of us knew the answer. |
| Both of my sisters live abroad. |
| Monday or Tuesday? Either day is fine. |
ไม่พูดแบบนี้ ✗ all us, ✗ both they → ✓ all of us, both of them ✗ most the students → ✓ most of the students
I have a few friends here ต่างจาก I have few friends here อย่างไร?

✗ Most of students work
✓ Most students work
Most of the students in my group work ชวนให้ใส่ of แต่หลัง of ในภาษาอังกฤษต้องมี the, my หรือสรรพนาม
the most และ almost แทน most
✗ The most of people prefer tea
✗ Almost people prefer tea
✓ Most people prefer tea
ไม่เติม -s หลัง of
✗ Some of my friend live abroad
✗ Most of the student are here
✓ Some of my friends live abroad
Most of the students are here คำนามไทยไม่เปลี่ยนรูปตามจำนวน แต่หลัง of คือกลุ่ม: นามนับได้ในกลุ่มจึงเป็นพหูพจน์
เป็น both … not
✗ Both of them didn't come → ✓ Neither of them came ภาษาไทยวางคำปฏิเสธไว้ที่กริยา: “ทั้งสองคนไม่ได้มา”, “เพื่อนทุกคนไม่ได้มา” ในภาษาอังกฤษ ถ้าไม่มีใคร มาเลย ใช้ neither (สองคน) หรือ none (สามคนขึ้นไป): ✓ None of my friends came ส่วน All of my friends didn't come ฟังเหมือน “ไม่ใช่ทุกคนที่มา” และหลัง none, neither ไม่ใส่ not อีก
ทิ้ง a ใน a few
I have few friends here
MOST of the STUdents /ˈməʊst əv ðə ˈstjuːdnts/, SOME of them /ˈsʌm əv ðəm/ all of us
อย่ากลืน a ใน a few /ə ˈfjuː/ กับ /fjuː/: เสียงเบาเสียงเดียวแยก “สองสาม” ออกจาก “น้อย” เช่นเดียวกับ a little /ə ˈlɪtl/
none สัมผัสกับ one และ sun: /nʌn/ ไม่ใช่ “โนน” both — /bəʊθ/ ท้ายคำเป็น /θ/ เหมือนใน think ไม่ใช่ /t/ either และ neither ออกเสียงได้สองแบบ (B1 บทที่ 6): /ˈaɪðə/ หรือ /ˈiːðə/, /ˈnaɪðə/ หรือ /ˈniːðə/
There are twelve of us in our Tuesday evening Spanish class, and last week our teacher gave us a short survey about our lives. Here are the results.
Most of us work full-time, and a few work part-time. None of us are students any more — the youngest person in the group is twenty-nine. Half of the class have been to Spain at least once, but only two people have lived there: Paul and Ruth. Both of them spent a year in Madrid, and neither of them wants to go back to an office job.
All of us have busy evenings, so homework is a problem. Some people do it on the train in the morning, and some hardly do it at all. Few of us practise speaking outside the class, and that's the biggest weakness of the group. We have a little time before the exam in June, so our teacher has a plan: every week, two of us are going to meet for a coffee and speak only Spanish. We'll meet on Mondays or Wednesdays — either day is fine for most people.
I asked my partner, Jenny, if she was nervous about the exam. "Not really," she said. "Most exams are easier than people think. And all of my friends who took it last year passed."
