15 minA l'A2 #13 deies quanta cosa hi havia: a lot of work, a few days, not much time.
|---|---|---|
| all | tots, tot | All of my friends came to the party. |
| most | la majoria | Most of the guests left before midnight. |
| half | la meitat | Half of the tickets have already gone. |
| many | molts | Many of my colleagues live outside London. |
| some | alguns, una part | Some of them work at weekends. |
| a few | uns quants | A few of us stayed to help. |
| none | cap, ningú, res | None of the shops were open. |
|---|---|---|
| both | tots dos, totes dues | Both of my parents are teachers. |
| either | qualsevol dels dos | Either of these days is fine for me. |
| neither | cap dels dos | Neither of the answers is right. |
Quan cal of. La paraula de proporció pot anar just davant del nom: most people, some students, all children.
|---|---|
| Most people like holidays. | Most of the people in my street have a car. |
| Some students work at night. | Some of my students work at night. |
| All children need sleep. | All of us were tired. |
| No shops are open on Christmas Day. | None of the shops were open. |
Per què: of vol dir «de», en el sentit de «d'entre». «La majoria d'entre aquells estudiants de què parlem» — most of the students. Si no hi ha cap grup concret, no hi ha d'entre qui triar, i of no hi va. D'aquí surt la prova: darrere de of hi ha d'haver the, my, these, those o un pronom. Sense ells, of no cal.
Amb un pronom, of sempre hi és: all of us, both of them, none of it, most of you.
all, both i half tenen una llibertat: davant de the i my poden deixar caure of. all the students = all of the students, both my parents = both of my parents, half the class. Les altres paraules no poden: només most of the students, some of my friends.
all i both darrere del subjecte. We all agreed. — «Tots hi vam estar d'acord». My parents are both teachers. — «Els meus pares són tots dos professors». The guests have all gone home.
none i no. no va just davant del nom: No students came. none va davant de of o sol, en una resposta: None of the students came. — How many tickets are left? — None.
Si les persones o les coses són tres o més, calen all, any, none: None of my three brothers lives here, no pas neither. Darrere de either i neither sense of va el singular: either day, neither answer. Amb of, el plural: neither of the answers.
not … either vol dir el mateix que neither, i a la conversa sona més habitual: I don't like either of them = I like neither of them — «no m'agrada cap dels dos».
neither ja l'has trobat en dos altres papers: neither … nor (B1 #6) i Neither do I (B1 #20). Aquí té el tercer: «cap dels dos».
a few i few, a little i little.
| I've got a few friends in Leeds, so I'm never lonely. | uns quants — i està bé |
| I've got few friends in Leeds, so I'm often lonely. | pocs — una queixa |
| We've got a little time — let's have a coffee. | una mica, però n'hi ha |
| We've got little time — hurry up. | gairebé gens |
A la conversa, few i little sense article sonen a llibre. En lloc seu normalment es diu not many, not much o only a few: I haven't got many friends here. En canvi, quite a few vol dir, al contrari, «bastants»: Quite a few of my colleagues cycle to work.
El verb. Darrere de most of, some of, all of, half of, el verb mira el nom que hi ha darrere de of: Most of the students are here, però Most of the money was spent. Si darrere de of hi ha una paraula de grup —class, team, family—, en anglès britànic valen tots dos nombres: Half of the class has been to France (la classe com un tot) i Half of the class have been to France (les persones que la formen). Darrere de none of, neither of i either of també valen tots dos: None of us is perfect i None of us are perfect, Neither of them knows i Neither of them know.
| Most of my colleagues come to work by train. |
| Some of the questions were really difficult. | Algunes de les preguntes eren molt difícils. |
| Half of the class have been to France. |
| None of us knew the answer. | Cap de nosaltres no sabia la resposta. |
| Both of my sisters live abroad. | Les meves dues germanes viuen a l'estranger. |
| Monday or Tuesday? Either day is fine. | Dilluns o dimarts? Qualsevol dels dos dies em va bé. |
Així no es diu. ✗ all us, ✗ both they → ✓ all of us, both of them. ✗ most the students → ✓ most of the students.
Posa't a prova. Quina diferència hi ha entre I have a few friends here i I have few friends here?

✗ Most of people work → ✓ Most people work. ✗ Most of students work → ✓ Most students work o Most of the students in my group work.
✗ The most of people prefer tea → ✓ Most people prefer tea. ✗ The half of the tickets → ✓ Half of the tickets o Half the tickets. «La majoria», «la meitat» porten article, i l'article passa a l'anglès. Però the most és el superlatiu (A2 #8): the most expensive, «el més car».
El «no» de «cap d'ells no…»
✗ None of them didn't come → ✓ None of them came. ✗ Neither of us didn't know → ✓ Neither of us knew.
✗ None of my parents drives → ✓ Neither of my parents drives. ✗ Neither of my three brothers drives → ✓ None of my three brothers drives.
✗ None students passed the exam
✓ No students passed the exam
L'accent cau en la paraula de proporció i en el nom: MOST of the STUdents /ˈməʊst əv ðə ˈstjuːdnts/, SOME of them /ˈsʌm əv ðəm/. all of us s'enganxa en una sola paraula: /ˈɔːl əv əs/.
El mateix amb a little /ə ˈlɪtl/.
none rima amb one i sun: /nʌn/, no pas «non» amb una «o». both és /bəʊθ/, amb /θ/ al final, com a think. either i neither tenen dues pronúncies (B1 #6): /ˈaɪðə/ o /ˈiːðə/, /ˈnaɪðə/ o /ˈniːðə/.
A half la l no sona: /hɑːf/, com a calm i walk.
Text
5 minThere are twelve of us in our Tuesday evening French class, and last week our teacher gave us a short survey about our lives. Here are the results.
Most of us work full-time, and a few work part-time. None of us are students any more — the youngest person in the group is twenty-nine. Half of the class have been to France at least once, but only two people have lived there: Paul and Ruth. Both of them spent a year in Paris, and neither of them wants to go back to an office job.
All of us have busy evenings, so homework is a problem. Some people do it on the train in the morning, and some hardly do it at all. Few of us practise speaking outside the class, and that's the biggest weakness of the group. We have a little time before the exam in June, so our teacher has a plan: every week, two of us are going to meet for a coffee and speak only French. We'll meet on Mondays or Wednesdays — either day is fine for most people.
I asked my partner, Jenny, if she was nervous about the exam. "Not really," she said. "Most exams are easier than people think. And all of my friends who took it last year passed."

Model
There are fifteen people in my team at work. Most of us live in the city, but a few of my colleagues come in from the countryside. Half of the team have children. None of us are older than fifty. Both of our managers speak French, and neither of them drives to work. Few of us take a proper lunch break — we're always too busy.
