Gramatika

Na A2 #13 si hovoril, koľko čoho je: a lot of work, a few days, not much time.

all všetci, všetko All of my friends came to the party.
most väčšina Most of the guests left before midnight.
half polovica Half of the tickets have already gone.
many mnohí Many of my colleagues live outside London.
some niektorí, časť Some of them work at weekends.
a few niekoľko, pár A few of us stayed to help.
none ani jeden, nikto, nič None of the shops were open.

both obaja, obe Both of my parents are teachers.
either ktorýkoľvek z dvoch Either of these days is fine for me.
neither ani jeden z dvoch Neither of the answers is right.

Kedy treba of. Slovo podielu môže stáť priamo pred podstatným menom: most people, some students, all children. Ak však ide o konkrétnu, už známu skupinu — the students, my friends, these books, us, them —, medzi slovo podielu a skupinu vstupuje of:

všeobecne — bez of konkrétna skupina — s of
Most people like holidays. Most of the people in my street have a car.
Some students work at night. Some of my students work at night.
All children need sleep. All of us were tired.
No shops are open on Christmas Day. None of the shops were open.

„Väčšina z tých študentov, o ktorých hovoríme“ — most of the students. Ak konkrétna skupina nie je, nie je z čoho brať, a of sa nedáva. Z toho vyplýva kontrola: za of musí stáť the, my, these, those alebo zámeno. Bez nich of netreba.

So zámenom treba of vždy: all of us, both of them, none of it, most of you.

all, both a half majú jednu voľnosť: pred the a my sa of môže vynechať. all the students = all of the students, both my parents = both of my parents, half the class. Pri ostatných slovách to nejde: len most of the students, some of my friends.

all a both za podmetom. We all agreed. — „Všetci sme súhlasili.“ My parents are both teachers. — „Moji rodičia sú obaja učitelia.“ The guests have all gone home.

none a no. no stojí priamo pred podstatným menom: No students came. none — pred of alebo úplne samo, v odpovedi: None of the students came. — How many tickets are left? — None. Obe slová už nesú zápor, preto je sloveso za nimi kladné: None of them came. V slovenčine „nikto z nich neprišiel“ zaznie zápor dvakrát, v angličtine raz. Ten istý zákon ako pri neither … nor (B1 #6) a nobody (A2 #14).

Dvaja, alebo viac. both, either, neither hovoria len o dvoch. Ak je ľudí alebo vecí tri a viac, treba all, any, none: None of my three brothers lives here, nie neither. Za either a neither bez of stojí jednotné číslo: either day, neither answer. S of — množné: neither of the answers.

not … either znamená to isté čo neither a v rozhovore znie bežnejšie: I don't like either of them = I like neither of them — „nepáči sa mi ani jeden z nich“.

neither si už stretol v dvoch iných úlohách: neither … nor (B1 #6) a Neither do I (B1 #20). Tu je tretia úloha — „ani jeden z dvoch“.

a few a few, a little a little. Člen obracia hodnotenie. a few (s počítateľnými) a a little (s nepočítateľnými) — „niekoľko“, „trochu“, a to stačí. Bez a tie isté slová znamenajú „málo“, „takmer žiadny“, a to je zlé.

I've got a few friends in Leeds, so I'm never lonely. pár priateľov — a to je dobre
I've got few friends in Leeds, so I'm often lonely. málo — sťažnosť
We've got a little time — let's have a coffee. trochu, ale je
We've got little time — hurry up. takmer žiadny

V rozhovore znejú few a little bez člena knižne. Namiesto nich sa zvyčajne hovorí not many, not much alebo only a few: I haven't got many friends here. A quite a few naopak znamená „dosť veľa“: Quite a few of my colleagues cycle to work.

Sloveso. Po most of, some of, all of, half of sa sloveso riadi podstatným menom za of: Most of the students are here, ale Most of the money was spent. Ak za of stojí slovo pre skupinu — class, team, family —, v britskej angličtine sú správne obe čísla: Half of the class has been to Spain (trieda ako jeden celok) a Half of the class have been to Spain (ľudia v nej). Po none of, neither of a either of sú tiež správne obe: None of us is perfect aj None of us are perfect, Neither of them knows aj Neither of them know.

Most of my colleagues come to work by train. Väčšina mojich kolegov chodí do práce vlakom.
Some of the questions were really difficult. Niektoré otázky boli naozaj ťažké.
Half of the class have been to Spain. Polovica skupiny už bola v Španielsku.
None of us knew the answer. Nikto z nás nevedel odpoveď.
Both of my sisters live abroad. Obe moje sestry žijú v zahraničí.
Monday or Tuesday? Either day is fine. V pondelok, alebo v utorok? Hodí sa ktorýkoľvek deň.

Takto sa nehovorí. ✗ all us, ✗ both they → ✓ all of us, both of them. ✗ most the students → ✓ most of the students.

Otestuj sa. Ako povedať „Väčšina mojich priateľov býva v Londýne“? Čím sa líši I have a few friends here od I have few friends here? Ako povedať „ani jedna z dvoch odpovedí nie je správna“?

zobraziť odpovede
Most of my friends live in London; v prvej vete priatelia sú, a to je dobre, v druhej ich je málo — to je sťažnosť; Neither of the answers is right / Neither answer is right.

Chyby slovensky hovoriacich

napísané pre váš jazyk
1

of tam, kde nemá byť

✗ Most of students work

✓ Most students work

(študenti všeobecne) alebo Most of the students in my group work (konkrétni). Slovenské „väčšina študentov“ znie v oboch zmysloch rovnako a „väčšina z nich“, „niektorí zo študentov“ napovedajú „z“ — of. Anglické of však za sebou chce the, my alebo zámeno.

2

the most vo význame „väčšina“

✗ The most of people prefer tea

✓ Most people prefer tea

the most je tretí stupeň (A2 #8): the most expensive — „najdrahší“. Slovenské „najviac ľudí pije čaj“ je tiež tretí stupeň, a tak ruka sama pripíše the.

3

Dvojitý zápor

✗ None of them didn't come → ✓ None of them came. ✗ Neither of us didn't know → ✓ Neither of us knew. V angličtine none a neither už zápor nesú a druhé not vetu rozbije.

4

neither o troch a viac

✗ Neither of my three brothers drives

✓ None of my three brothers drives

5

few namiesto a few

4 min

of je v týchto spojeniach neprízvučné — /əv/, a pred spoluhláskou často len /ə/. Prízvuk padá na slovo podielu a na podstatné meno: MOST of the STUdents /ˈməʊst əv ðə ˈstjuːdnts/, SOME of them /ˈsʌm əv ðəm/. all of us splýva do jedného slova: /ˈɔːl əv əs/.

a v a few neprehĺtaj. /ə ˈfjuː/ oproti /fjuː/: jediná slabá hláska odlišuje „niekoľko“ od „málo“. Rovnako pri a little /ə ˈlɪtl/.

none sa rýmuje s one a sun: /nʌn/, nie „non“. both — /bəʊθ/, s /θ/ na konci ako v think. either a neither znejú dvojako (B1 #6): /ˈaɪðə/ alebo /ˈiːðə/, /ˈnaɪðə/ alebo /ˈniːðə/.

V half sa písmeno l nečíta: /hɑːf/, ako v calm a walk.

Text

5 min

There are twelve of us in our Tuesday evening Spanish class, and last week our teacher gave us a short survey about our lives. Here are the results.

Most of us work full-time, and a few work part-time. None of us are students any more — the youngest person in the group is twenty-nine. Half of the class have been to Spain at least once, but only two people have lived there: Paul and Ruth. Both of them spent a year in Madrid, and neither of them wants to go back to an office job.

All of us have busy evenings, so homework is a problem. Some people do it on the train in the morning, and some hardly do it at all. Few of us practise speaking outside the class, and that's the biggest weakness of the group. We have a little time before the exam in June, so our teacher has a plan: every week, two of us are going to meet for a coffee and speak only Spanish. We'll meet on Mondays or Wednesdays — either day is fine for most people.

I asked my partner, Jenny, if she was nervous about the exam. "Not really," she said. "Most exams are easier than people think. And all of my friends who took it last year passed."
