Tata bahasa

15 menit

Di A2 #13 Anda mengatakan berapa banyak sesuatu: a lot of work, a few days, not much time.

Kata bagian. Dari “semua” sampai “tidak seorang pun”:

kata bagian contoh
all semua, seluruh All of my friends came to the party.
most sebagian besar, kebanyakan Most of the guests left before midnight.
half setengah, separuh Half of the tickets have already gone.
many banyak Many of my colleagues live outside London.
some sebagian, beberapa Some of them work at weekends.
a few beberapa A few of us stayed to help.
none tidak satu pun, tidak seorang pun None of the shops were open.

Tentang dua orang atau dua benda dipakai tiga kata tersendiri:

kata bagian contoh
both keduanya Both of my parents are teachers.
either salah satu dari dua, mana saja Either of these days is fine for me.
neither tidak satu pun dari dua Neither of the answers is right.

Kapan perlu of. Kata bagian dapat berdiri langsung di depan kata benda: most people, some students, all children.

umum — tanpa of kelompok tertentu — dengan of
Most people like holidays. Most of the people in my street have a car.
Some students work at night. Some of my students work at night.
All children need sleep. All of us were tired.
No shops are open on Christmas Day. None of the shops were open.

Mengapa begitu: of berarti “dari”. “Sebagian besar dari mahasiswa yang sedang kita bicarakan” — most of the students. Dari sini cara memeriksanya: sesudah of selalu ada the, my, these, those atau kata ganti. Tanpa itu of tidak diperlukan.

Dengan kata ganti of selalu diperlukan: all of us, both of them, none of it, most of you.

all, both dan half punya kelonggaran: di depan the dan my kata of boleh dilewati. all the students = all of the students, both my parents = both of my parents, half the class. Kata yang lain tidak bisa begitu: hanya most of the students, some of my friends.

all dan both sesudah subjek. We all agreed. — “Kami semua setuju.” My parents are both teachers. — “Orang tua saya dua-duanya guru.” The guests have all gone home.

none dan no. no berdiri langsung di depan kata benda: No students came. none — di depan of atau sendirian, dalam jawaban: None of the students came. — How many tickets are left? — None. Kedua kata ini sudah membawa negasi, jadi kata kerja sesudahnya positif: None of them came.

Jika orang atau bendanya tiga atau lebih, diperlukan all, any, none: None of my three brothers lives here, bukan neither. Sesudah either dan neither tanpa of dipakai bentuk tunggal: either day, neither answer. Dengan of — bentuk jamak: neither of the answers.

not … either berarti sama dengan neither, dan dalam percakapan terdengar lebih biasa: I don't like either of them = I like neither of them — “saya tidak suka satu pun dari keduanya”.

a few dan few, a little dan little.

I've got a few friends in Leeds, so I'm never lonely. beberapa — dan itu baik
I've got few friends in Leeds, so I'm often lonely. sedikit sekali — keluhan
We've got a little time — let's have a coffee. sedikit, tetapi ada
We've got little time — hurry up. hampir tidak ada

Dalam percakapan few dan little tanpa artikel terdengar seperti bahasa buku. Sebagai gantinya biasanya orang berkata not many, not much atau only a few: I haven't got many friends here. Sebaliknya, quite a few berarti “cukup banyak”: Quite a few of my colleagues cycle to work.

Kata kerja. Sesudah most of, some of, all of, half of kata kerja mengikuti kata benda sesudah of: Most of the students are here, tetapi Most of the money was spent. Jika sesudah of ada kata yang berarti kelompok — class, team, family — dalam bahasa Inggris Britania kedua bentuk benar: Half of the class has been to Spain (kelas sebagai satu kesatuan) dan Half of the class have been to Spain (orang-orang di dalamnya). Sesudah none of, neither of dan either of juga keduanya benar: None of us is perfect dan None of us are perfect, Neither of them knows dan Neither of them know.

Contoh lain:

Most of my colleagues come to work by train. Sebagian besar rekan kerja saya berangkat kerja naik kereta.
Some of the questions were really difficult. Beberapa pertanyaannya benar-benar sulit.
Half of the class have been to Spain. Setengah dari kelas pernah ke Spanyol.
None of us knew the answer. Tidak seorang pun dari kami tahu jawabannya.
Both of my sisters live abroad. Kedua saudara perempuan saya tinggal di luar negeri.
Monday or Tuesday? Either day is fine. Senin atau Selasa? Hari mana saja boleh.

Jangan katakan begini. ✗ all us, ✗ both they → ✓ all of us, both of them. ✗ most the students → ✓ most of the students.

Uji diri Anda. Bagaimana mengatakan “Sebagian besar teman saya tinggal di London”? Apa bedanya I have a few friends here dengan I have few friends here?

tampilkan jawaban
Most of my friends live in London; pada kalimat pertama teman itu ada, dan itu baik, pada kalimat kedua temannya sedikit sekali — itu keluhan; Neither of the answers is right / Neither answer is right.

Kesalahan penutur bahasa Indonesia

1

of di tempat yang tidak perlu

✗ Most of students work

✓ Most students work

(mahasiswa pada umumnya) atau Most of the students in my group work (mahasiswa tertentu). Tetapi of dalam bahasa Inggris menuntut the, my atau kata ganti sesudahnya.

2

“Keduanya tidak” menjadi both … not

✗ Both of them didn't come

✓ Neither of them came

3

the most dalam arti “sebagian besar”

✗ The most of people prefer tea

✓ Most people prefer tea

“Kebanyakan” terasa dekat dengan “paling banyak”, dan muncul the. Padahal the most adalah bentuk superlatif (A2 #8): the most expensive — “paling mahal”.

4

neither tentang tiga atau lebih

✗ Neither of my three brothers drives

✓ None of my three brothers drives

5

few sebagai pengganti a few

I have few friends here dalam arti “saya punya beberapa teman di sini” — kalimatnya benar, tetapi artinya lain: “teman saya sedikit sekali”. Bahasa Indonesia tidak punya artikel, jadi a mudah hilang, padahal di sini hanya a yang membedakan “beberapa” dari “sedikit sekali”.

Pelafalan

4 menit

Tekanan jatuh pada kata bagian dan pada kata benda: MOST of the STUdents /ˈməʊst əv ðə ˈstjuːdnts/, SOME of them /ˈsʌm əv ðəm/. all of us melebur menjadi satu kata: /ˈɔːl əv əs/.

a dalam a few jangan ditelan. /ə ˈfjuː/ lawan /fjuː/: satu bunyi lemah membedakan “beberapa” dari “sedikit sekali”. Begitu juga a little /ə ˈlɪtl/.

There are twelve of us in our Tuesday evening Spanish class, and last week our teacher gave us a short survey about our lives. Here are the results.

Most of us work full-time, and a few work part-time. None of us are students any more — the youngest person in the group is twenty-nine. Half of the class have been to Spain at least once, but only two people have lived there: Paul and Ruth. Both of them spent a year in Madrid, and neither of them wants to go back to an office job.

All of us have busy evenings, so homework is a problem. Some people do it on the train in the morning, and some hardly do it at all. Few of us practise speaking outside the class, and that's the biggest weakness of the group. We have a little time before the exam in June, so our teacher has a plan: every week, two of us are going to meet for a coffee and speak only Spanish. We'll meet on Mondays or Wednesdays — either day is fine for most people.

I asked my partner, Jenny, if she was nervous about the exam. "Not really," she said. "Most exams are easier than people think. And all of my friends who took it last year passed."
