„Sõltuma millestki“, „ootama bussi“, „kuulama muusikat“, „selgitama mulle“. Igas sellises ühendis otsustab eesti verb ise, millises käändes on sõna selle järel ja kas on vaja kaassõna. Inglise verb otsustab samuti ise, ainult omal moel. Kokkulangevusi on, kuid need on juhuslikud: „rääkima millestki“ — talk about, „sõltuma millestki“ aga — depend on, mitte from. Seepärast õpitakse verbi järel olevat eessõna koos verbiga, sõna osana. Sama kehtib nimisõnade ja omadussõnade kohta: verb, nimisõna ja omadussõna koos eessõnaga moodustavad ühe süsteemi „sõna + eessõna“.

Vorm. Eessõna seisab kohe verbi järel, ja selle järel see, millele tegevus on suunatud: It depends on the weather. I'm waiting for the bus. Eituses jääb eessõna verbi juurde: I don't agree with you. Kui aga küsitakse selle kohta, mis seisab eessõna järel, läheb eessõna ise lõppu — samamoodi nagu B1 #17 kõrvallausetes:

I'm waiting for Tom. Who are you waiting for?
It depends on the price. What does it depend on?
This bag belongs to Anna. Who does this bag belong to?
They're talking about the new manager. Who are they talking about?

Eessõna küsimuse lõpus on kõnekeelse inglise keele norm, mitte lohakus.

Verbid eessõnaga. Eessõnad pole siin päris juhuslikud: igaühel on oma suund, ja see aitab verbe rühmiti meelde jätta.

eessõna mida see lisab verbid
for see, mida tahetakse saada wait for, look for (otsima), ask for, apply for, pay for
to kellele suunatud listen to, talk to, belong to, reply to, happen to
about teema think about, talk about, worry about, complain about
on tugi depend on, concentrate on, spend money on
at punkt, kuhu vaadatakse look at, laugh at, point at
with kellega koos agree with, argue with
of millest koosneb consist of

pay vajab tähelepanu. Asja eest makstakse — pay for the coffee, kuid arve, inimene või summa on ilma eessõnata: pay the bill, pay the waiter, pay ten pounds.

look moodustab kolm eri verbi — eessõna otsustab kogu tähenduse:

I'm looking for my keys. Ma otsin võtmeid.
Look at this photo! Vaata seda fotot!
She looks after her grandmother. Ta hoolitseb oma vanaema eest.

Verb + keda + eessõna. Mõnel verbil on kaks sihitist, ja eessõna seisab teise ees: thank someone for something, ask someone for something, spend money on something, borrow something from someone. Thanks for your help. I asked my boss for a day off. We spent too much on the hotel.

Eriline lõks on explain. Eesti „selgita mulle“ on alaleütlevas käändes, ilma kaassõnata. Inglise keeles ühendatakse see, kellele selgitatakse, ainult to abil: Can you explain the rule to me? Või: Can you explain to me how it works? Samamoodi käituvad describe something to someone ja say something to someone.

Verbid ilma eessõnata. Vastupidine lõks: eesti keeles tõmbab siin eessõna kaasa kääne („tuppa“, „temaga“, „küsimusele“, „talle“) või sarnane verb („rääkima millestki“ → ✗ discuss about), inglise keel saab aga ilma selleta hakkama.

✗ ✓ eesti keeles
discuss about the plan discuss the plan arutama plaani
enter into the room enter the room sisenema tuppa
answer to the question answer the question vastama küsimusele
marry with him marry him abielluma temaga
phone to her phone her helistama talle
reach to the station reach the station jõudma jaama
join to the club join the club astuma klubisse

Nimisõnad eessõnaga. Nimisõnadel on oma eessõnad, ja sageli mitte samad, mis sugulasverbil:

the reason for the delay hilinemise põhjus
the answer to the question vastus küsimusele
a solution to the problem probleemi lahendus
the key to the door ukse võti
an invitation to the party kutse peole
an interest in history huvi ajaloo vastu
the difference between them erinevus nende vahel
a problem with the car probleem autoga

Omadussõnad eessõnaga. Sama süsteemi kolmas osa. Paljude omadussõnade järel on samuti oma eessõna, ja eesti tõlke järgi seda ära ei arva: „hea matemaatikas“ — good at maths, „vihane tema peale“ — angry with him. Ühend jäetakse meelde tervikuna:

good at / bad at She's good at maths.
interested in I'm interested in history.
afraid of He's afraid of dogs.
proud of We're proud of our daughter.
tired of I'm tired of waiting. — Mul on ootamisest kõrini.
keen on He's keen on football. — Ta on jalgpallist vaimustuses.
worried about They're worried about money.
angry with kellegi peale, about millegi pärast She was angry with me about the car.
pleased with I'm pleased with the result.
different from My job is different from yours.
famous for The town is famous for its cheese.
full of The room was full of people.
married to She's married to a doctor.

Paljud neist on B1 #26 -ed-vormid: interested in, worried about, disappointed with. Sageli on omadussõnal sama eessõna mis sugulasverbil või -nimisõnal: worry about — worried about, an interest in — interested in. tired ja tired of on eri asjad: I'm tired — „ma olen väsinud“, I'm tired of it — „mul on sellest kõrini“. keen on on väga briti ühend: I'm not keen on spicy food — „ma pole vürtsika toidu suur sõber“. different from asemel öeldakse briti kõnes sageli different to; ka see on õige.

Võrdle sama tüvega verbi ja nimisõna:

Please answer the question. verb — ilma eessõnata
What's the answer to the question? nimisõna — to-ga
We discussed the plan. verb — ilma eessõnata
We had a discussion about the plan. nimisõna — about-iga

Eessõna järel on verb -ing-vormis — iga eessõna järel: verbi oma, nagu I'm thinking about moving, Thanks for coming, She insisted on paying (B1 #16), ja omadussõna oma: good at cooking, afraid of flying, tired of waiting.

Veel näiteid:

I agree with you, but it depends on the price. Olen sinuga nõus, aga kõik sõltub hinnast.
What happened to your car? Mis su autoga juhtus?
He spent all his money on books. Ta kulutas kogu oma raha raamatutele.
The team consists of six people. Meeskond koosneb kuuest inimesest.

Nii ei öelda. ✗ What are you waiting? → ✓ What are you waiting for? Ilma eessõnata lõpus kaotab küsimus mõtte: wait ja wait for on eri verbid.

Kontrolli ennast. Kuidas öelda „See sõltub ilmast“? Mis on valesti lauses We discussed about the price? Millised eessõnad tulevad good, afraid ja proud järele?

näita vastuseid
It depends on the weather; discuss ei võta eessõna: We discussed the price; good at, afraid of, proud of.

Eesti keele kõneleja vead

kirjutatud sinu keele jaoks
1

Eessõna eesti käändest

✗ depend from → ✓ depend on. ✗ consist from → ✓ consist of. ✗ the reason of the delay → ✓ the reason for the delay. „Sõltuma millestki“, „koosnema millestki“ — seestütlev „-st“ tõlgitakse otse from-iks; „hilinemise põhjus“ — omastav, ja see saab of-i. Nende sõnade inglise eessõna on teine, ja seda tuleb lihtsalt teada.

2

Puuduv eessõna

✗ I listen music → ✓ I listen to music. ✗ We waited the bus → ✓ We waited for the bus. Eesti „kuulan muusikat“, „ootasime bussi“ — sihitis on ilma kaassõnata, ja inglise eessõna tundub üleliigne. Kuid listen ja wait ei ühendu sihitisega ilma selleta.

3

Üleliigne eessõna

✗ enter into the room

✗ marry with him

✗ answer to the question

✓ enter the room

marry him, answer the question. Eesti kääne kannab siin suunda — „sisenema tuppa“, „abielluma temaga“, „vastama küsimusele“ —, ja seda tahaks edasi anda eessõnaga. Inglise verbid võtavad sihitise otse. Sama juhtub discuss-iga: „rääkima millestki“ on talk about, ja about kolib discuss-i juurde.

4

explain me

✗ Explain me the rule → ✓ Explain the rule to me. ✗ Can you explain me how it works? → ✓ Can you explain to me how it works? Eesti „selgita mulle“ on alaleütlevas käändes, ja „mulle“ asetub kohe verbi järele, nagu give me ja show me. Kuid explain seda ei oska: selle, kellele selgitatakse, ühendab ta ainult to abil.

5

Eessõna omadussõna järel eesti keele järgi

✗ good in maths → ✓ good at maths („hea matemaatikas“). ✗ angry on him → ✓ angry with him („vihane tema peale“). ✗ married with a doctor → ✓ married to a doctor („abielus arstiga“). Eesti kääne või kaassõna pakub oma varianti, kuid inglise ühend langeb sellega kokku ainult juhuslikult. Väljend married with children on olemas, kuid tähendab muud: „abielus, on lapsed“.

Hääldus

Fraasi sees on eessõna rõhuta: for /fə/, to /tə/, at /ət/, of /əv/, from /frəm/. I'm waiting for the bus — /aɪm ˈweɪtɪŋ fə ðə ˈbʌs/. Rõhk on verbil ja nimisõnal.

Küsimuse lõpus kõlab eessõna täielikult. Who are you waiting for? — /fɔː/, Who does it belong to? — /tuː/, What are you looking at? — /æt/. Nõrka vormi fraasi lõpus ei kasutata.

Verb ja eessõna sulanduvad üheks sõnaks: depends on /dɪˈpendz ɒn/, look at /ˈlʊk ət/, listen to /ˈlɪsn tə/ — tähte t sõnas listen ei loeta.

Tekst

Hi Sam,

Thanks for your message, and sorry I didn't reply to it sooner — it's been a busy week.

You asked about the job in Bristol. I applied for it at the start of the month, and on Monday I had the interview. They asked me a lot of questions about my last job and my reasons for leaving it. The answer to the last question took me ages: "What are you most proud of?" I'm still waiting for their decision, and I'm not very good at waiting. It depends on two things — how many other people they've interviewed and whether the manager agrees with me about the salary. We discussed it for half an hour, and I'm not sure we found a solution to the problem.

If I get the job, we'll have to look for a flat in Bristol. Anna doesn't worry about things like that, but I do. And who's going to look after Mum? She hates asking anyone for help, and she never listens to anybody but me.

Anyway, enough about me. What are you working on at the moment? And have you found out who that old bike in your garden belongs to?

Love, Kate
