”Riippua jostakin”, ”odottaa bussia”, ”kuunnella musiikkia”, ”selittää minulle”. Jokaisessa tällaisessa yhdistelmässä suomen verbi päättää itse, missä sijamuodossa seuraava sana on.

Muoto. Prepositio tulee heti verbin jälkeen, ja sen jälkeen se, mihin toiminta kohdistuu: It depends on the weather. I'm waiting for the bus. Kieltolauseessa prepositio pysyy verbin luona: I don't agree with you.

I'm waiting for Tom. Who are you waiting for?
It depends on the price. What does it depend on?
This bag belongs to Anna. Who does this bag belong to?
They're talking about the new manager. Who are they talking about?

for se, mitä halutaan saada wait for, look for (etsiä), ask for, apply for, pay for
to kehen suuntautuu listen to, talk to, belong to, reply to, happen to
about aihe think about, talk about, worry about, complain about
on tuki depend on, concentrate on, spend money on
at piste, johon katsotaan look at, laugh at, point at
with kenen kanssa agree with, argue with
of mistä koostuu consist of

pay vaatii tarkkuutta. Maksetaan jostakin asiasta — pay for the coffee, mutta itse lasku, ihminen tai summa — ilman prepositiota: pay the bill, pay the waiter, pay ten pounds.

I'm looking for my keys. Etsin avaimiani.
Look at this photo! Katso tätä valokuvaa!
She looks after her grandmother. Hän huolehtii isoäidistään.

Verbi + kenet + prepositio. Joillakin verbeillä on kaksi objektia, ja prepositio tulee toisen eteen: thank someone for something, ask someone for something, spend money on something, borrow something from someone. Thanks for your help. I asked my boss for a day off. We spent too much on the hotel.

Erityinen ansa on explain. Suomen ”selitä minulle” on allatiivissa, ja englanniksi me asettuu helposti suoraan verbin jälkeen kuten sanoissa give me ja show me. Englannissa se, jolle selitetään, liitetään kuitenkin vain to-sanalla: Can you explain the rule to me? Tai: Can you explain to me how it works? Samoin toimivat describe something to someone ja say something to someone.

Verbit ilman prepositiota.

✗ ✓ suomeksi
discuss about the plan discuss the plan keskustella suunnitelmasta
enter into the room enter the room mennä huoneeseen
answer to the question answer the question vastata kysymykseen
marry with him marry him mennä naimisiin hänen kanssaan
phone to her phone her soittaa hänelle
reach to the station reach the station päästä asemalle
join to the club join the club liittyä kerhoon

the reason for the delay viivästyksen syy
the answer to the question vastaus kysymykseen
a solution to the problem ratkaisu ongelmaan
the key to the door oven avain
an invitation to the party kutsu juhliin
an interest in history kiinnostus historiaan
the difference between them ero niiden välillä
a problem with the car ongelma auton kanssa

Adjektiivit ja prepositiot. Saman järjestelmän kolmas osa. Monen adjektiivin jälkeen tulee myös oma prepositionsa, eikä sitä voi arvata suomen sijamuodosta: ”hyvä matematiikassa” — good at maths, ”vihainen hänelle” — angry with him. Yhdistelmä opitaan kokonaisena:

good at / bad at She's good at maths.
interested in I'm interested in history.
afraid of He's afraid of dogs.
proud of We're proud of our daughter.
tired of I'm tired of waiting. — Olen kyllästynyt odottamaan.
keen on He's keen on football. — Hän on innostunut jalkapallosta.
worried about They're worried about money.
angry with kenelle, about mistä She was angry with me about the car.
pleased with I'm pleased with the result.
different from My job is different from yours.
famous for The town is famous for its cheese.
full of The room was full of people.
married to She's married to a doctor.

Monet niistä ovat B1-tason oppitunnin 26 -ed-muotoja: interested in, worried about, disappointed with. Usein adjektiivilla on sama prepositio kuin samankantaisella verbillä tai substantiivilla: worry about — worried about, an interest in — interested in. tired ja tired of ovat eri asioita: I'm tired — ”olen väsynyt”, I'm tired of it — ”olen kyllästynyt siihen”. keen on on hyvin brittiläinen yhdistelmä: I'm not keen on spicy food — ”en ole mikään tulisen ruoan ystävä”. different from -ilmauksen sijaan brittiläisessä puheessa sanotaan usein different to; sekin on oikein.

Vertaa samankantaista verbiä ja substantiivia:

Please answer the question. verbi — ilman prepositiota
What's the answer to the question? substantiivi — to-sanalla
We discussed the plan. verbi — ilman prepositiota
We had a discussion about the plan. substantiivi — about-sanalla

Preposition jälkeen verbi on -ing-muodossa — minkä tahansa preposition jälkeen: verbin, kuten I'm thinking about moving, Thanks for coming, She insisted on paying (B1 #16), ja adjektiivin: good at cooking, afraid of flying, tired of waiting.

Lisää esimerkkejä:

I agree with you, but it depends on the price. Olen samaa mieltä, mutta kaikki riippuu hinnasta.
What happened to your car? Mitä autollesi tapahtui?
He spent all his money on books. Hän käytti kaikki rahansa kirjoihin.
The team consists of six people. Tiimi koostuu kuudesta ihmisestä.

Näin ei sanota. ✗ What are you waiting? → ✓ What are you waiting for? Ilman prepositiota lopussa kysymys menettää merkityksensä: wait ja wait for ovat eri verbejä.

Testaa itsesi. Miten sanotaan ”Se riippuu säästä”? Mikä on vialla lauseessa We discussed about the price? Mitkä prepositiot tulevat sanojen good, afraid ja proud jälkeen?

näytä vastaukset
It depends on the weather; discuss ei ota prepositiota: We discussed the price; good at, afraid of, proud of.

1

Prepositio suomen sijamuodosta

✗ depend from → ✓ depend on. ✗ consist from → ✓ consist of. ✗ the reason of the delay → ✓ the reason for the delay.

2

Puuttuva prepositio

✗ I listen music → ✓ I listen to music. ✗ We waited the bus → ✓ We waited for the bus. ✗ Look this photo! → ✓ Look at this photo!

3

Ylimääräinen prepositio

✗ discuss about the plan

✗ answer to the question

✗ phone to her

✗ marry with him

✓ discuss the plan

answer the question, phone her, marry him. Suomen sijapääte kantaa tässä suuntaa — ”keskustella suunnitelmasta”, ”vastata kysymykseen”, ”soittaa hänelle” — ja ”naimisiin hänen kanssaan” tuo mukanaan with-sanan. Englannin verbit ottavat objektin suoraan.

4

Prepositio adjektiivin jälkeen suomen mukaan

✗ good in maths → ✓ good at maths (”hyvä matematiikassa”). ✗ interested of history → ✓ interested in history (”kiinnostunut historiasta”, B1 #26). ✗ married with a doctor → ✓ married to a doctor (”naimisissa lääkärin kanssa”).

3 min

Lauseen sisällä prepositio on painoton: for /fə/, to /tə/, at /ət/, of /əv/, from /frəm/. I'm waiting for the bus — /aɪm ˈweɪtɪŋ fə ðə ˈbʌs/. Paino on verbillä ja substantiivilla.

Kysymyksen lopussa prepositio ääntyy täytenä. Who are you waiting for? — /fɔː/, Who does it belong to? — /tuː/, What are you looking at? — /æt/. Heikkoa muotoa ei käytetä lauseen lopussa.

Verbi ja prepositio sulautuvat yhdeksi sanaksi: depends on /dɪˈpendz ɒn/, look at /ˈlʊk ət/, listen to /ˈlɪsn tə/ — sanan listen kirjainta t ei äännetä.

Hi Sam,

Thanks for your message, and sorry I didn't reply to it sooner — it's been a busy week.

You asked about the job in Bristol. I applied for it at the start of the month, and on Monday I had the interview. They asked me a lot of questions about my last job and my reasons for leaving it. The answer to the last question took me ages: "What are you most proud of?" I'm still waiting for their decision, and I'm not very good at waiting. It depends on two things — how many other people they've interviewed and whether the manager agrees with me about the salary. We discussed it for half an hour, and I'm not sure we found a solution to the problem.

If I get the job, we'll have to look for a flat in Bristol. Anna doesn't worry about things like that, but I do. And who's going to look after Mum? She hates asking anyone for help, and she never listens to anybody but me.

Anyway, enough about me. What are you working on at the moment? And have you found out who that old bike in your garden belongs to?

Love, Kate
