“Depender de”, “esperar o ônibus”, “ouvir música”, “me explicar”.

A forma. It depends on the weather. I'm waiting for the bus. Na negação a preposição continua junto do verbo: I don't agree with you.

I'm waiting for Tom. Who are you waiting for?
It depends on the price. What does it depend on?
This bag belongs to Anna. Who does this bag belong to?
They're talking about the new manager. Who are they talking about?

for o que se quer obter wait for, look for (procurar), ask for, apply for, pay for
to a quem se dirige listen to, talk to, belong to, reply to, happen to
about o assunto think about, talk about, worry about, complain about
on o apoio depend on, concentrate on, spend money on
at o ponto para onde se olha look at, laugh at, point at
with junto com quem agree with, argue with
of de que é feito consist of

pay pede atenção. Paga-se por uma coisa — pay for the coffee, mas a conta, a pessoa ou a quantia vêm sem preposição: pay the bill, pay the waiter, pay ten pounds.

look forma três verbos diferentes — com ele a preposição decide o sentido inteiro:

I'm looking for my keys. Estou procurando as chaves.
Look at this photo! Olha esta foto!
She looks after her grandmother. Ela cuida da avó.

Verbo + alguém + preposição. Alguns verbos têm dois complementos, e a preposição vem antes do segundo: thank someone for something, ask someone for something, spend money on something, borrow something from someone. Thanks for your help. I asked my boss for a day off. We spent too much on the hotel.

Uma armadilha especial é explain. Em português, “me explica” põe o “me” colado ao verbo, sem preposição. Em inglês, quem recebe a explicação só entra com to: Can you explain the rule to me? Ou: Can you explain to me how it works? Do mesmo jeito funcionam describe something to someone e say something to someone.

Verbos sem preposição. A armadilha contrária: o verbo do português pede preposição, e o inglês passa sem ela.

✗ ✓ em português
discuss about the plan discuss the plan discutir o plano, discutir sobre o plano
enter in the room enter the room entrar na sala
answer to the question answer the question responder à pergunta
marry with him marry him casar com ele
phone to her phone her ligar para ela
reach to the station reach the station chegar à estação
join to the club join the club entrar no clube

the reason for the delay o motivo do atraso
the answer to the question a resposta à pergunta
a solution to the problem a solução do problema
the key to the door a chave da porta
an invitation to the party o convite para a festa
an interest in history o interesse por história
the difference between them a diferença entre eles
a problem with the car um problema com o carro

good at / bad at She's good at maths.
interested in I'm interested in history.
afraid of He's afraid of dogs.
proud of We're proud of our daughter.
tired of I'm tired of waiting. — Cansei de esperar.
keen on He's keen on football. — Ele é fã de futebol.
worried about They're worried about money.
angry with alguém, about algo She was angry with me about the car.
pleased with I'm pleased with the result.
different from My job is different from yours.
famous for The town is famous for its cheese.
full of The room was full of people.
married to She's married to a doctor.

Muitos deles são formas em -ed do B1 #26: interested in, worried about, disappointed with. Muitas vezes o adjetivo tem a mesma preposição do verbo ou do substantivo da mesma família: worry about — worried about, an interest in — interested in. tired e tired of são coisas diferentes: I'm tired — “estou cansado”, I'm tired of it — “cansei disso, estou farto”. keen on é uma combinação bem britânica: I'm not keen on spicy food — “não sou muito fã de comida apimentada”. No lugar de different from, na fala britânica muitas vezes se diz different to; também está certo.

Compare o verbo e o substantivo da mesma raiz:

Please answer the question. verbo — sem preposição
What's the answer to the question? substantivo — com to
We discussed the plan. verbo — sem preposição
We had a discussion about the plan. substantivo — com about

Depois de preposição o verbo fica na forma em -ing — depois de qualquer uma: da preposição do verbo, como em I'm thinking about moving, Thanks for coming, She insisted on paying (B1 #16), e da do adjetivo: good at cooking, afraid of flying, tired of waiting.

Mais exemplos:

I agree with you, but it depends on the price.
What happened to your car? O que aconteceu com o seu carro?
He spent all his money on books. Ele gastou todo o dinheiro em livros.
The team consists of six people. A equipe é formada por seis pessoas.

Assim não se diz. ✗ What are you waiting? → ✓ What are you waiting for?

mostrar as respostas
It depends on the weather; discuss não leva preposição: We discussed the price; good at, afraid of, proud of.

Erros de quem fala português do Brasil

escrito para o seu idioma
1

A preposição do português

✗ It depends of the price → ✓ It depends on the price. ✗ I'm thinking in you → ✓ I'm thinking about you. ✗ Don't worry with me → ✓ Don't worry about me. “Depender de”, “pensar em”, “se preocupar com”: a preposição do português passa direto, e saem of, in e with. Em inglês esses verbos levam outra, e é preciso sabê-la.

2

A preposição que falta

✗ I listen music → ✓ I listen to music. ✗ We waited the bus → ✓ We waited for the bus. ✗ I'm looking my keys → ✓ I'm looking for my keys. “Ouvir música”, “esperar o ônibus”, “procurar as chaves” vêm sem preposição, e a preposição inglesa parece sobrar. Mas listen, wait e look sem ela não se ligam ao complemento.

3

A preposição que sobra

✗ discuss about the plan

✗ enter in the room

✗ marry with him

✗ phone to her

✓ discuss the plan

enter the room, marry him, phone her. “Discutir sobre”, “entrar na”, “casar com”, “ligar para” arrastam a preposição para o inglês.

4

explain me

✗ Explain me the rule → ✓ Explain the rule to me. ✗ Can you explain me how it works? → ✓ Can you explain to me how it works? “Me explica” leva o “me” colado ao verbo, como give me e show me.

5

A preposição do adjetivo, do português

✗ good in maths → ✓ good at maths (“bom em matemática”). ✗ married with a doctor → ✓ married to a doctor (“casada com um médico”). ✗ different of yours → ✓ different from yours (“diferente do seu”).

3 min

Dentro da frase a preposição é átona: for /fə/, to /tə/, at /ət/, of /əv/, from /frəm/. I'm waiting for the bus — /aɪm ˈweɪtɪŋ fə ðə ˈbʌs/. O acento cai no verbo e no substantivo.

No fim da pergunta a preposição soa inteira. Who are you waiting for? — /fɔː/, Who does it belong to? — /tuː/, What are you looking at?

Hi Sam,

Thanks for your message, and sorry I didn't reply to it sooner — it's been a busy week.

You asked about the job in Bristol. I applied for it at the start of the month, and on Monday I had the interview. They asked me a lot of questions about my last job and my reasons for leaving it. The answer to the last question took me ages: "What are you most proud of?" I'm still waiting for their decision, and I'm not very good at waiting. It depends on two things — how many other people they've interviewed and whether the manager agrees with me about the salary. We discussed it for half an hour, and I'm not sure we found a solution to the problem.

If I get the job, we'll have to look for a flat in Bristol. Anna doesn't worry about things like that, but I do. And who's going to look after Mum? She hates asking anyone for help, and she never listens to anybody but me.

Anyway, enough about me. What are you working on at the moment? And have you found out who that old bike in your garden belongs to?

Love, Kate
