I'm waiting for the bus.
| I'm waiting for Tom. | Who are you waiting for? |
| It depends on the price. | What does it depend on? |
| This bag belongs to Anna. | Who does this bag belong to? |
| They're talking about the new manager. | Who are they talking about? |
|---|---|---|
| for | ce qu'on veut obtenir | wait for, look for (chercher), ask for, apply for, pay for |
| to | vers qui c'est dirigé | listen to, talk to, belong to, reply to, happen to |
| about | le sujet | think about, talk about, worry about, complain about |
| on | l'appui | depend on, concentrate on, spend money on |
| at | le point qu'on regarde | look at, laugh at, point at |
| with | avec qui | agree with, argue with |
| I'm looking for my keys. | Je cherche mes clés. |
| Look at this photo! | Regarde cette photo ! |
| She looks after her grandmother. | Elle s'occupe de sa grand-mère. |
Verbe + qui + préposition. Certains verbes ont deux compléments, et la préposition se place devant le second : thank someone for something, ask someone for something, spend money on something, borrow something from someone. Thanks for your help. I asked my boss for a day off. We spent too much on the hotel.
Can you explain the rule to me? Ou : Can you explain to me how it works? describe something to someone et say something to someone fonctionnent de la même façon.
|---|---|---|
| discuss about the plan | discuss the plan | discuter du plan |
| enter into the room | enter the room | entrer dans la pièce |
| answer to the question | answer the question | répondre à la question |
| marry with him | marry him | se marier avec lui |
| phone to her | phone her | lui téléphoner |
| reach to the station | reach the station | arriver à la gare |
| join to the club | join the club | s'inscrire au club |
| the reason for the delay | la raison du retard |
| the answer to the question | la réponse à la question |
| a solution to the problem | la solution du problème |
| the key to the door | la clé de la porte |
| an invitation to the party | une invitation à la fête |
| an interest in history | l'intérêt pour l'histoire |
| the difference between them | la différence entre eux |
| a problem with the car | un problème avec la voiture |
Les adjectifs avec préposition. La troisième partie du même système. Beaucoup d'adjectifs sont suivis eux aussi de leur préposition, et la traduction française ne permet pas de la deviner : « bon en maths » — good at maths, « en colère contre lui » — angry with him. On retient la combinaison en entier :
| good at / bad at | She's good at maths. |
| interested in | I'm interested in history. |
| afraid of | He's afraid of dogs. |
| proud of | We're proud of our daughter. |
| tired of | I'm tired of waiting. — J'en ai assez d'attendre. |
| keen on | He's keen on football. — Il est passionné de football. |
| worried about | They're worried about money. |
| angry with (qui), about (quoi) | She was angry with me about the car. |
| pleased with | I'm pleased with the result. |
| different from | My job is different from yours. |
| famous for | The town is famous for its cheese. |
| full of | The room was full of people. |
| married to | She's married to a doctor. |
| Please answer the question. | verbe — sans préposition |
| What's the answer to the question? | nom — avec to |
| We discussed the plan. | verbe — sans préposition |
| We had a discussion about the plan. | nom — avec about |
Après une préposition, le verbe prend la forme en -ing — après n'importe laquelle : celle d'un verbe, comme dans I'm thinking about moving, Thanks for coming, She insisted on paying (B1 #16), et celle d'un adjectif : good at cooking, afraid of flying, tired of waiting.
Encore des exemples :
| I agree with you, but it depends on the price. |
| What happened to your car? |
| He spent all his money on books. |
| The team consists of six people. | L'équipe se compose de six personnes. |
On ne dit pas ça. ✗ What are you waiting? → ✓ What are you waiting for?

✗ depend of → ✓ depend on. ✗ worry for him → ✓ worry about him.
✗ I listen music → ✓ I listen to music. ✗ We waited the bus → ✓ We waited for the bus. ✗ I'm looking my keys → ✓ I'm looking for my keys.
✗ discuss about the plan
✗ enter in the room
✗ answer to the question
✗ marry with him
✓ discuss the plan
enter the room, answer the question, marry him.
explain me
« Explique-moi la règle » → ✗ Explain me the rule → ✓ Explain the rule to me. ✗ Can you explain me how it works? → ✓ Can you explain to me how it works?
✗ good in maths → ✓ good at maths (« bon en maths »). ✗ interested by history → ✓ interested in history (« intéressé par »). ✗ married with a doctor → ✓ married to a doctor (« marié avec un médecin »).
Prononciation
3 minÀ l'intérieur de la phrase, la préposition est inaccentuée : for /fə/, to /tə/, at /ət/, of /əv/, from /frəm/. I'm waiting for the bus — /aɪm ˈweɪtɪŋ fə ðə ˈbʌs/.
Who are you waiting for? — /fɔː/, Who does it belong to? — /tuː/, What are you looking at?
Texte
5 minHi Sam,
Thanks for your message, and sorry I didn't reply to it sooner — it's been a busy week.
You asked about the job in Bristol. I applied for it at the start of the month, and on Monday I had the interview. They asked me a lot of questions about my last job and my reasons for leaving it. The answer to the last question took me ages: "What are you most proud of?" I'm still waiting for their decision, and I'm not very good at waiting. It depends on two things — how many other people they've interviewed and whether the manager agrees with me about the salary. We discussed it for half an hour, and I'm not sure we found a solution to the problem.
If I get the job, we'll have to look for a flat in Bristol. Anna doesn't worry about things like that, but I do. And who's going to look after Mum? She hates asking anyone for help, and she never listens to anybody but me.
Anyway, enough about me. What are you working on at the moment? And have you found out who that old bike in your garden belongs to?
Love, Kate
