I'm waiting for the bus.
| I'm waiting for Tom. | Who are you waiting for? |
| It depends on the price. | What does it depend on? |
| This bag belongs to Anna. | Who does this bag belong to? |
| They're talking about the new manager. | Who are they talking about? |
|---|---|---|
| for | ciò che si vuole ottenere | wait for, look for (cercare), ask for, apply for, pay for |
| to | verso chi è diretto | listen to, talk to, belong to, reply to, happen to |
| about | l'argomento | think about, talk about, worry about, complain about |
| on | l'appoggio | depend on, concentrate on, spend money on |
| at | il punto verso cui si guarda | look at, laugh at, point at |
| with | insieme a chi | agree with, argue with |
| of | di che cosa è fatto | consist of |
pay richiede attenzione. Per la cosa che si compra ci vuole for: «pagare il caffè» — pay for the coffee.
| I'm looking for my keys. | Sto cercando le chiavi. |
| Look at this photo! | Guarda questa foto! |
| She looks after her grandmother. | Si prende cura della nonna. |
Verbo + chi + preposizione. Alcuni verbi hanno due complementi, e la preposizione sta davanti al secondo: thank someone for something, ask someone for something, spend money on something, borrow something from someone. Thanks for your help. I asked my boss for a day off. We spent too much on the hotel.
In inglese la persona a cui si spiega si unisce solo con to: Can you explain the rule to me? Oppure: Can you explain to me how it works? Allo stesso modo funzionano describe something to someone e say something to someone.
Verbi senza preposizione.
| ✗ | ✓ | in italiano |
|---|---|---|
| discuss about the plan | discuss the plan | discutere del piano |
| enter into the room | enter the room | entrare nella stanza |
| answer to the question | answer the question | rispondere alla domanda |
| marry with him | marry him | sposarsi con lui |
| phone to her | phone her | telefonare a lei |
| reach to the station | reach the station | arrivare alla stazione |
| join to the club | join the club | iscriversi al club |
| the reason for the delay | il motivo del ritardo |
| the answer to the question | la risposta alla domanda |
| a solution to the problem | la soluzione del problema |
| the key to the door | la chiave della porta |
| an invitation to the party | l'invito alla festa |
| an interest in history | l'interesse per la storia |
| the difference between them | la differenza tra loro |
| good at / bad at | She's good at maths. |
| interested in | I'm interested in history. |
| afraid of | He's afraid of dogs. |
| proud of | We're proud of our daughter. |
| tired of | I'm tired of waiting. — Sono stufo di aspettare. |
| keen on | He's keen on football. — È appassionato di calcio. |
| worried about | They're worried about money. |
| angry with chi, about che cosa | She was angry with me about the car. |
| pleased with | I'm pleased with the result. |
| different from | My job is different from yours. |
| famous for | The town is famous for its cheese. |
| full of | The room was full of people. |
| married to | She's married to a doctor. |
| Please answer the question. | verbo — senza preposizione |
| What's the answer to the question? | nome — con to |
| We discussed the plan. | verbo — senza preposizione |
| We had a discussion about the plan. | nome — con about |
Dopo una preposizione il verbo va nella forma in -ing — dopo qualsiasi preposizione: quella di un verbo, come in I'm thinking about moving, Thanks for coming, She insisted on paying (B1 #16), e quella di un aggettivo: good at cooking, afraid of flying, tired of waiting.
Altri esempi:
| I agree with you, but it depends on the price. |
| What happened to your car? | Che cosa è successo alla tua macchina? |
| He spent all his money on books. | Ha speso tutti i suoi soldi in libri. |
| The team consists of six people. | La squadra è composta da sei persone. |
Così non si dice. ✗ What are you waiting? → ✓ What are you waiting for?
Che cosa non va in We discussed about the price? Quali preposizioni vanno dopo good, afraid e proud?

Errori tipici degli italofoni
adattato alla tua linguaLa preposizione dell'italiano
✗ It depends from the price → ✓ It depends on the price. ✗ I'm thinking to you → ✓ I'm thinking about you. ✗ Don't worry for me → ✓ Don't worry about me. «Dipendere da», «pensare a», «preoccuparsi per»: la preposizione italiana passa tale e quale, e vengono fuori from, to e for.
✗ I listen music → ✓ I listen to music. ✗ We waited the bus → ✓ We waited for the bus. ✗ I'm looking my keys → ✓ I'm looking for my keys.
✗ discuss about the plan
✗ enter in the room
✗ marry with him
✗ phone to her
✓ discuss the plan
enter the room, marry him, phone her.
explain me
✗ Explain me the rule → ✓ Explain the rule to me. ✗ Can you explain me how it works? → ✓ Can you explain to me how it works? In «spiegami» il pronome si attacca al verbo, come in give me e show me.
✗ good in maths → ✓ good at maths («bravo in matematica»). ✗ married with a doctor → ✓ married to a doctor («sposata con un medico»). ✗ the reason of the delay → ✓ the reason for the delay («il motivo del ritardo»). A volte coincidono (proud of, angry with, full of), ma solo per caso. married with children esiste, ma vuol dire un'altra cosa: «sposato, con figli».
Pronuncia
3 minDentro la frase la preposizione è atona: for /fə/, to /tə/, at /ət/, of /əv/, from /frəm/. I'm waiting for the bus — /aɪm ˈweɪtɪŋ fə ðə ˈbʌs/.
Who are you waiting for? — /fɔː/, Who does it belong to? — /tuː/, What are you looking at?
Testo
5 minHi Sam,
Thanks for your message, and sorry I didn't reply to it sooner — it's been a busy week.
You asked about the job in Bristol. I applied for it at the start of the month, and on Monday I had the interview. They asked me a lot of questions about my last job and my reasons for leaving it. The answer to the last question took me ages: "What are you most proud of?" I'm still waiting for their decision, and I'm not very good at waiting. It depends on two things — how many other people they've interviewed and whether the manager agrees with me about the salary. We discussed it for half an hour, and I'm not sure we found a solution to the problem.
If I get the job, we'll have to look for a flat in Bristol. Anna doesn't worry about things like that, but I do. And who's going to look after Mum? She hates asking anyone for help, and she never listens to anybody but me.
Anyway, enough about me. What are you working on at the moment? And have you found out who that old bike in your garden belongs to?
Love, Kate
