It depends on the weather. I'm waiting for the bus. La negație prepoziția rămâne lângă verb: I don't agree with you.

I'm waiting for Tom. Who are you waiting for?
It depends on the price. What does it depend on?
This bag belongs to Anna. Who does this bag belong to?
They're talking about the new manager. Who are they talking about?

for ce vrei să obții wait for, look for (a căuta), ask for, apply for, pay for
to spre cine e îndreptat listen to, talk to, belong to, reply to, happen to
about tema think about, talk about, worry about, complain about
on sprijinul depend on, concentrate on, spend money on
at punctul spre care privești look at, laugh at, point at
with împreună cu cine agree with, argue with
of din ce consist of

pay cere atenție. Pentru lucrul cumpărat — pay for the coffee, dar nota, omul sau suma — fără prepoziție: pay the bill, pay the waiter, pay ten pounds.

look formează trei verbe diferite — aici prepoziția hotărăște tot sensul:

I'm looking for my keys. Îmi caut cheile.
Look at this photo! Uită-te la poza asta!
She looks after her grandmother. Are grijă de bunica ei.

Verb + pe cine + prepoziție. Unele verbe au două complemente, iar prepoziția stă înaintea celui de-al doilea: thank someone for something, ask someone for something, spend money on something, borrow something from someone. Thanks for your help. I asked my boss for a day off. We spent too much on the hotel.

În engleză cel căruia i se explică se leagă doar prin to: Can you explain the rule to me? Sau: Can you explain to me how it works?

discuss about the plan discuss the plan a discuta planul
enter into the room enter the room a intra în cameră
answer to the question answer the question a răspunde la întrebare
marry with him marry him a se căsători cu el
phone to her phone her a-i telefona
reach to the station reach the station a ajunge la gară
join to the club join the club a intra în club

the reason for the delay motivul întârzierii
the answer to the question răspunsul la întrebare
a solution to the problem soluția problemei
the key to the door cheia de la ușă
an invitation to the party invitația la petrecere
an interest in history interesul pentru istorie
the difference between them diferența dintre ele
a problem with the car o problemă cu mașina

Adjective cu prepoziție. A treia parte a aceluiași sistem. După multe adjective stă și ea o prepoziție proprie, iar după traducerea românească n-o ghicești: „supărat pe el” — angry with him, „căsătorită cu un medic” — married to a doctor. Îmbinarea se ține minte întreagă:

good at / bad at She's good at maths.
interested in I'm interested in history.
afraid of He's afraid of dogs.
proud of We're proud of our daughter.
tired of I'm tired of waiting. — M-am săturat să aștept.
keen on He's keen on football. — E pasionat de fotbal.
worried about They're worried about money.
angry with cineva, about ceva She was angry with me about the car.
pleased with I'm pleased with the result.
different from My job is different from yours.
famous for The town is famous for its cheese.
full of The room was full of people.
married to She's married to a doctor.

Multe dintre ele sunt forme în -ed din B1 #26: interested in, worried about, disappointed with. Adesea adjectivul are aceeași prepoziție ca verbul sau substantivul înrudit: worry about — worried about, an interest in — interested in. tired și tired of sunt lucruri diferite: I'm tired — „sunt obosit”, I'm tired of it — „m-am săturat de asta”. keen on e o îmbinare foarte britanică: I'm not keen on spicy food — „nu prea îmi place mâncarea picantă”. În locul lui different from, în vorbirea britanică se spune des different to; e corect și așa.

Compară verbul și substantivul din aceeași rădăcină:

Please answer the question. verbul — fără prepoziție
What's the answer to the question? substantivul — cu to
We discussed the plan. verbul — fără prepoziție
We had a discussion about the plan. substantivul — cu about

După prepoziție verbul stă la forma în -ing — după orice prepoziție: după cea a unui verb, ca în I'm thinking about moving, Thanks for coming, She insisted on paying (B1 #16), și după cea a unui adjectiv: good at cooking, afraid of flying, tired of waiting.

Încă exemple:

I agree with you, but it depends on the price.
What happened to your car? Ce s-a întâmplat cu mașina ta?
He spent all his money on books. Și-a cheltuit toți banii pe cărți.
The team consists of six people. Echipa e formată din șase oameni.

Așa nu se spune. ✗ What are you waiting? → ✓ What are you waiting for?

Verifică-te.

It depends on the weather; discuss nu cere prepoziție: We discussed the price; good at, afraid of, proud of.

Greșelile vorbitorilor de limba română

adaptat pentru limba ta
1

Prepoziția din română

„Depinde de”, „constă din”, „îmi fac griji pentru el” → ✗ depend of, ✗ consist from, ✗ worry for him → ✓ depend on, consist of, worry about him.

2

Prepoziția lipsă

„Ascult muzică”, „am așteptat autobuzul”, „îmi caut cheile” → ✗ I listen music, ✗ We waited the bus, ✗ I'm looking my keys → ✓ I listen to music, We waited for the bus, I'm looking for my keys.

3

Prepoziția în plus

„A discuta despre”, „a intra în cameră”, „a răspunde la întrebare”, „a se căsători cu el” → ✗ discuss about the plan, ✗ enter in the room, ✗ answer to the question, ✗ marry with him → ✓ discuss the plan, enter the room, answer the question, marry him. Prepoziția românească trece în engleză, deși aceste verbe își iau complementul direct.

4

explain me

„Explică-mi regula” → ✗ Explain me the rule → ✓ Explain the rule to me. ✗ Can you explain me how it works? → ✓ Can you explain to me how it works? „-mi” se lipește de verb, ca în give me și show me. Dar explain nu poate așa: cel căruia i se explică vine doar cu to.

5

Prepoziția adjectivului, din română

„Supărat pe el” → ✗ angry on him → ✓ angry with him. „Căsătorită cu un medic” → ✗ married with a doctor → ✓ married to a doctor. Îmbinarea married with children există, dar înseamnă altceva: „căsătorit, cu copii”.

6

Genitivul tradus cu of

„Motivul întârzierii”, „cheia ușii” → ✗ the reason of the delay, ✗ the key of the door → ✓ the reason for the delay, the key to the door. Genitivul românesc pare mereu of, dar aceste substantive își cer prepoziția lor.

Pronunție

3 min

În interiorul frazei prepoziția e neaccentuată: for /fə/, to /tə/, at /ət/, of /əv/, from /frəm/. I'm waiting for the bus — /aɪm ˈweɪtɪŋ fə ðə ˈbʌs/. Accentul — pe verb și pe substantiv.

La sfârșitul întrebării prepoziția sună întreagă. Who are you waiting for? — /fɔː/, Who does it belong to? — /tuː/, What are you looking at?

Hi Sam,

Thanks for your message, and sorry I didn't reply to it sooner — it's been a busy week.

You asked about the job in Bristol. I applied for it at the start of the month, and on Monday I had the interview. They asked me a lot of questions about my last job and my reasons for leaving it. The answer to the last question took me ages: "What are you most proud of?" I'm still waiting for their decision, and I'm not very good at waiting. It depends on two things — how many other people they've interviewed and whether the manager agrees with me about the salary. We discussed it for half an hour, and I'm not sure we found a solution to the problem.

If I get the job, we'll have to look for a flat in Bristol. Anna doesn't worry about things like that, but I do. And who's going to look after Mum? She hates asking anyone for help, and she never listens to anybody but me.

Anyway, enough about me. What are you working on at the moment? And have you found out who that old bike in your garden belongs to?

Love, Kate
