Eftir þessa kennslustund geturðu

Ég get valið rétta forsetningu á eftir sögn, nafnorði og lýsingarorði — og tekið eftir því hvar hún fer ekki saman við íslensku.

„Fara eftir“, „bíða eftir strætó“, „hlusta á tónlist“, „útskýra fyrir mér“. Í hverju slíku sambandi ákveður íslenska sögnin sjálf hvort hún þarf forsetningu og hverja. Enska sögnin ákveður það líka sjálf, bara á sinn hátt. Stundum fer þetta saman, en það er tilviljun: „hugsa um“ — think about, en „hlusta á“ — listen to, ekki on, og „það fer eftir“ — it depends on. Þess vegna er forsetningin á eftir sögninni lærð með sögninni, sem hluti orðsins. Sama gildir um nafnorð og lýsingarorð: sögn, nafnorð og lýsingarorð með forsetningu mynda eitt kerfi, „orð + forsetning“.

Myndin. Forsetningin stendur strax á eftir sögninni, og á eftir henni það sem verknaðurinn beinist að: It depends on the weather. I'm waiting for the bus. Í neitun verður forsetningin áfram hjá sögninni: I don't agree with you. En ef spurt er um það sem stendur á eftir forsetningunni, fer forsetningin sjálf í lokin — eins og í tilvísunarsetningunum í lexíu B1 #17:

I'm waiting for Tom. Who are you waiting for?
It depends on the price. What does it depend on?
This bag belongs to Anna. Who does this bag belong to?
They're talking about the new manager. Who are they talking about?

Forsetning í lok spurningar er eðlileg í talaðri ensku, ekki hirðuleysi. Íslenskan þekkir þetta líka: „Hvað ertu að bíða eftir?“

Sagnir með forsetningu. Forsetningarnar eru ekki alveg tilviljanakenndar: hver þeirra hefur sína stefnu, og hún hjálpar til við að muna sagnirnar í hópum.

forsetning hvað hún bætir við sagnir
for það sem á að fá wait for, look for (leita að), ask for, apply for, pay for
to að hverjum það beinist listen to, talk to, belong to, reply to, happen to
about umræðuefni think about, talk about, worry about, complain about
on stoð depend on, concentrate on, spend money on
at punktur sem horft er á look at, laugh at, point at
with með hverjum agree with, argue with
of úr hverju consist of

pay krefst athygli. Borgað er fyrir hlut — pay for the coffee, en reikninginn sjálfan, manneskjuna eða upphæðina — án forsetningar: pay the bill, pay the waiter, pay ten pounds.

look myndar þrjár ólíkar sagnir — með því ræður forsetningin allri merkingunni:

I'm looking for my keys. Ég er að leita að lyklunum mínum.
Look at this photo! Horfðu á þessa mynd!
She looks after her grandmother. Hún annast ömmu sína.

Sögn + hvern + forsetning. Sumar sagnir hafa tvö andlög, og forsetningin stendur á undan því síðara: thank someone for something, ask someone for something, spend money on something, borrow something from someone. Thanks for your help. I asked my boss for a day off. We spent too much on the hotel.

Sérstök gildra er explain. Á íslensku er sagt „útskýrðu fyrir mér“, og „fyrir“ freistar til að setja for. Á ensku er sá sem útskýrt er fyrir tengdur aðeins með to: Can you explain the rule to me? Eða: Can you explain to me how it works? Eins haga sér describe something to someone og say something to someone.

Sagnir án forsetningar. Öfug gildra: á íslensku ýtir forsetning eða skyld sögn með forsetningu („ræða um“, „tala um“ → ✗ discuss about) undir að setja forsetningu, en enskan kemst af án hennar.

✗ ✓ á íslensku
discuss about the plan discuss the plan ræða áætlunina
enter into the room enter the room ganga inn í herbergið
answer to the question answer the question svara spurningunni
marry with him marry him giftast honum
phone to her phone her hringja í hana
reach to the station reach the station komast á lestarstöðina
join to the club join the club ganga í klúbbinn

Nafnorð með forsetningu. Nafnorð hafa sínar forsetningar, og oft ekki þær sömu og skyld sögn:

the reason for the delay ástæðan fyrir seinkuninni
the answer to the question svarið við spurningunni
a solution to the problem lausn á vandanum
the key to the door lykillinn að hurðinni
an invitation to the party boð í veisluna
an interest in history áhugi á sögu
the difference between them munurinn á þeim
a problem with the car vandamál með bílinn

Lýsingarorð með forsetningu. Þriðji hluti sama kerfis. Á eftir mörgum lýsingarorðum stendur líka sín forsetning, og íslenska þýðingin segir ekki til um hana: „góður í stærðfræði“ — good at maths, „reiður út í hann“ — angry with him. Sambandið er lært í heild:

good at / bad at She's good at maths.
interested in I'm interested in history.
afraid of He's afraid of dogs.
proud of We're proud of our daughter.
tired of I'm tired of waiting. — Ég er orðin(n) leið(ur) á að bíða.
keen on He's keen on football. — Hann hefur mikinn áhuga á fótbolta.
worried about They're worried about money.
angry with einhverjum, about einhverju She was angry with me about the car.
pleased with I'm pleased with the result.
different from My job is different from yours.
famous for The town is famous for its cheese.
full of The room was full of people.
married to She's married to a doctor.

Mörg þeirra eru myndir á -ed úr lexíu B1 #26: interested in, worried about, disappointed with. Oft hefur lýsingarorðið sömu forsetningu og skyld sögn eða nafnorð: worry about — worried about, an interest in — interested in. tired og tired of eru sitt hvað: I'm tired — „ég er þreytt(ur)“, I'm tired of it — „ég er orðin(n) leið(ur) á þessu“. keen on er mjög breskt samband: I'm not keen on spicy food — „ég er ekki mikið fyrir sterkan mat“. Í stað different from er í breskri ensku oft sagt different to; það er líka rétt.

Berðu saman sögn og nafnorð af sömu rót:

Please answer the question. sögn — án forsetningar
What's the answer to the question? nafnorð — með to
We discussed the plan. sögn — án forsetningar
We had a discussion about the plan. nafnorð — með about

Á eftir forsetningu stendur sögnin í mynd á -ing — á eftir hvaða forsetningu sem er: á eftir forsetningu sagnar, eins og í I'm thinking about moving, Thanks for coming, She insisted on paying (lexía B1 #16), og á eftir forsetningu lýsingarorðs: good at cooking, afraid of flying, tired of waiting.

Fleiri dæmi:

I agree with you, but it depends on the price. Ég er sammála þér, en það fer allt eftir verðinu.
What happened to your car? Hvað kom fyrir bílinn þinn?
He spent all his money on books. Hann eyddi öllum peningunum sínum í bækur.
The team consists of six people. Liðið samanstendur af sex manneskjum.

Svona er ekki sagt. ✗ What are you waiting? → ✓ What are you waiting for? Án forsetningarinnar í lokin missir spurningin merkingu sína: wait og wait for eru ólíkar sagnir.

Prófaðu kunnáttuna. Hvernig segirðu „Það fer eftir veðrinu“? Hvað er athugavert við We discussed about the price? Hvaða forsetningar koma á eftir good, afraid og proud?

sýna svörin
It depends on the weather; discuss tekur enga forsetningu: We discussed the price; good at, afraid of, proud of.

1

„Á“ sem on

✗ I listen on music → ✓ I listen to music. ✗ Look on this photo! → ✓ Look at this photo! „Hlusta á“, „horfa á“, „líta á“ — íslenska „á“ er gjarnan þýtt beint sem on. En listen tekur to, og look í merkingunni „horfa“ tekur at.

2

„Góður í“ sem good in

✗ She's good in maths

✓ She's good at maths

„Góður í stærðfræði“, „slæmur í tungumálum“ — íslenska „í“ verður að in. Enska sambandið er good at, bad at, og á eftir því kemur nafnorð eða sögn á -ing: good at cooking.

3

Forsetning sem enskan sleppir

✗ We discussed about the plan → ✓ We discussed the plan. ✗ He entered into the room → ✓ He entered the room. Á íslensku er bæði sagt „ræða áætlunina“ og „ræða um áætlunina“, og „um“ fylgir með yfir í ensku. „Ganga inn í herbergið“ dregur into með sér. discuss og enter taka andlagið beint.

4

explain for me og explain me

✗ Can you explain for me how it works?

✗ Explain me the rule

✓ Can you explain to me how it works?

Explain the rule to me. Íslenska „útskýra fyrir mér“ gefur for, og „segðu mér“, „sýndu mér“ — tell me, show me — leiða til explain me. En explain tengir þann sem útskýrt er fyrir aðeins með to.

5

Engin forsetning þar sem íslenskan notar fall

✗ I didn't reply your message → ✓ I didn't reply to your message. ✗ Who does this bag belong? → ✓ Who does this bag belong to? „Svara skilaboðunum“, „taskan tilheyrir Önnu“ — íslenskan tengir andlagið með þágufalli, án forsetningar. reply og belong þurfa to.

Framburður

3 mín.

Inni í setningu er forsetningin áherslulaus: for /fə/, to /tə/, at /ət/, of /əv/, from /frəm/. I'm waiting for the bus — /aɪm ˈweɪtɪŋ fə ðə ˈbʌs/. Áherslan er á sögninni og nafnorðinu.

Í lok spurningar heyrist forsetningin óskert. Who are you waiting for? — /fɔː/, Who does it belong to? — /tuː/, What are you looking at? — /æt/. Veika myndin er ekki notuð í lok setningar.

Sögn og forsetning renna saman í eitt orð: depends on /dɪˈpendz ɒn/, look at /ˈlʊk ət/, listen to /ˈlɪsn tə/ — t í listen er ekki borið fram.

Hi Sam,

Thanks for your message, and sorry I didn't reply to it sooner — it's been a busy week.

You asked about the job in Bristol. I applied for it at the start of the month, and on Monday I had the interview. They asked me a lot of questions about my last job and my reasons for leaving it. The answer to the last question took me ages: "What are you most proud of?" I'm still waiting for their decision, and I'm not very good at waiting. It depends on two things — how many other people they've interviewed and whether the manager agrees with me about the salary. We discussed it for half an hour, and I'm not sure we found a solution to the problem.

If I get the job, we'll have to look for a flat in Bristol. Anna doesn't worry about things like that, but I do. And who's going to look after Mum? She hates asking anyone for help, and she never listens to anybody but me.

Anyway, enough about me. What are you working on at the moment? And have you found out who that old bike in your garden belongs to?

Love, Kate

I'm thinking about changing my job, but it depends on a few things. I've applied for two jobs and I'm waiting for an answer. My parents are worried about me, but I try not to worry about it too much. My sister looks after her children and works part-time, so we often discuss money. Who do I usually ask for advice? My sister, of course.
