It depends on the weather. I'm waiting for the bus. I don't agree with you.

I'm waiting for Tom. Who are you waiting for?
It depends on the price. What does it depend on?
This bag belongs to Anna. Who does this bag belong to?
They're talking about the new manager. Who are they talking about?

for 手に入れたいもの wait for, look for (探す), ask for, apply for, pay for
to 向かう相手 listen to, talk to, belong to, reply to, happen to
about 話題 think about, talk about, worry about, complain about
on 支え、よりどころ depend on, concentrate on, spend money on
at 見る先の点 look at, laugh at, point at
with いっしょにいる相手 agree with, argue with
of 何から成るか consist of

ものの代金を払うときは pay for the coffee ですが、勘定、人、金額には前置詞を付けません:pay the bill、pay the waiter、pay ten pounds。

I'm looking for my keys.
Look at this photo!
She looks after her grandmother.

目的語が2つある動詞では、前置詞は2つ目の前に置きます:thank someone for something、ask someone for something、spend money on something、borrow something from someone。 Thanks for your help. I asked my boss for a day off. We spent too much on the hotel.

Can you explain the rule to me? または:Can you explain to me how it works? describe something to someone と say something to someone も同じです。

discuss about the plan discuss the plan
enter into the room enter the room
answer to the question answer the question
marry with him marry him 彼と結婚する
phone to her phone her 彼女に電話する
reach to the station reach the station
join to the club join the club

the reason for the delay
the answer to the question
a solution to the problem
the key to the door
an invitation to the party
an interest in history
the difference between them 両者の違い
a problem with the car

good at / bad at She's good at maths.
interested in I'm interested in history.
afraid of He's afraid of dogs.
proud of We're proud of our daughter.
tired of I'm tired of waiting.
keen on He's keen on football.
worried about They're worried about money.
angry with 人、about 事 She was angry with me about the car.
pleased with I'm pleased with the result.
different from My job is different from yours.
famous for The town is famous for its cheese.
full of The room was full of people.
married to She's married to a doctor.

その多くは、第26課の -ed の形です:interested in、worried about、disappointed with。形容詞の前置詞は、関係のある動詞や名詞と同じことがよくあります:worry about — worried about、an interest in — interested in。tired と tired of は別物です:I'm tired — 「疲れた」、I'm tired of it — 「それにはもううんざりだ」。 I'm not keen on spicy food — 「辛いものはあまり好きではない」。

Please answer the question.
What's the answer to the question?
We discussed the plan.
We had a discussion about the plan.

前置詞のあとの動詞は -ing の形にします — どの前置詞のあとでも同じです:動詞に付く前置詞 — I'm thinking about moving、Thanks for coming、She insisted on paying(第16課)— でも、形容詞に付く前置詞 — good at cooking、afraid of flying、tired of waiting — でも。

I agree with you, but it depends on the price.
What happened to your car?
He spent all his money on books.
The team consists of six people.

✗ What are you waiting? → ✓ What are you waiting for?

We discussed about the price

It depends on the weather; discuss We discussed the price; good at、afraid of、proud of.

✗ I listen music → ✓ I listen to music。✗ We waited the bus → ✓ We waited for the bus。✗ I'm looking my keys → ✓ I'm looking for my keys。

✗ discuss about the plan

✓ discuss the plan

3

「に」「と」を to、with にする。

✗ answer to the question、✗ reach to the station、 ✗ marry with him → ✓ answer the question、reach the station、marry him。 ✗ She's married with a doctor → ✓ She's married to a doctor

4

explain me。

✗ Explain me the rule → ✓ Explain the rule to me。✗ Can you explain me how it works? → ✓ Can you explain to me how it works?

✗ the reason of the delay → ✓ the reason for the delay。✗ the answer of the question → ✓ the answer to the question。

文の中の前置詞は強勢がありません: for /fə/、to /tə/、at /ət/、of /əv/、from /frəm/。 I'm waiting for the bus — /aɪm ˈweɪtɪŋ fə ðə ˈbʌs/。

Who are you waiting for? — /fɔː/、Who does it belong to? — /tuː/、What are you looking at? — /æt/。

動詞と前置詞は1語のようにつながります: depends on /dɪˈpendz ɒn/、look at /ˈlʊk ət/、listen to /ˈlɪsn tə/ — listen の t は発音しません。

Hi Sam,

Thanks for your message, and sorry I didn't reply to it sooner — it's been a busy week.

You asked about the job in Bristol. I applied for it at the start of the month, and on Monday I had the interview. They asked me a lot of questions about my last job and my reasons for leaving it. The answer to the last question took me ages: "What are you most proud of?" I'm still waiting for their decision, and I'm not very good at waiting. It depends on two things — how many other people they've interviewed and whether the manager agrees with me about the salary. We discussed it for half an hour, and I'm not sure we found a solution to the problem.

If I get the job, we'll have to look for a flat in Bristol. Anna doesn't worry about things like that, but I do. And who's going to look after Mum? She hates asking anyone for help, and she never listens to anybody but me.

Anyway, enough about me. What are you working on at the moment? And have you found out who that old bike in your garden belongs to?

Love, Kate
