„Závisieť od“, „čakať na autobus“, „počúvať hudbu“, „vysvetliť mi“. V každom takom spojení slovenské sloveso samo rozhoduje, či treba predložku a akú. Anglické sloveso tiež rozhoduje samo, len po svojom. Zhody sa vyskytujú, ale sú náhodné: „rozmýšľať o“ — think about, ale „závisieť od“ — už depend on, nie from. Preto sa predložka po slovese učí spolu so slovesom, ako časť slova. To isté platí pre podstatné a prídavné mená: sloveso, podstatné meno a prídavné meno s predložkou tvoria jeden systém „slovo + predložka“.

Tvar. Predložka stojí hneď za slovesom a za ňou to, k čomu sa dej vzťahuje: It depends on the weather. I'm waiting for the bus. V zápore predložka zostáva pri slovese: I don't agree with you.

I'm waiting for Tom. Who are you waiting for?
It depends on the price. What does it depend on?
This bag belongs to Anna. Who does this bag belong to?
They're talking about the new manager. Who are they talking about?

Predložky tu nie sú celkom náhodné: každá má svoj smer a ten pomáha zapamätať si slovesá v skupinách.

predložka čo pridáva slovesá
for to, čo chceme získať wait for, look for (hľadať), ask for, apply for, pay for
to ku komu smeruje listen to, talk to, belong to, reply to, happen to
about téma think about, talk about, worry about, complain about
on opora depend on, concentrate on, spend money on
at bod, kam sa pozeráme look at, laugh at, point at
with spolu s kým agree with, argue with
of z čoho consist of

pay si vyžaduje pozornosť. Platí sa za vec — pay for the coffee, ale samotný účet, človek alebo suma — bez predložky: pay the bill, pay the waiter, pay ten pounds.

look tvorí tri rôzne slovesá — predložka pri ňom rozhoduje o celom význame:

I'm looking for my keys. Hľadám kľúče.
Look at this photo! Pozri sa na túto fotku!
She looks after her grandmother. Stará sa o babku.

Sloveso + koho + predložka. Niektoré slovesá majú dva predmety a predložka stojí pred druhým: thank someone for something, ask someone for something, spend money on something, borrow something from someone. Thanks for your help. I asked my boss for a day off. We spent too much on the hotel.

Osobitná pasca je explain. Po slovensky „vysvetli mi“ — s datívom, bez predložky. V angličtine sa ten, komu vysvetľujeme, pripája len cez to: Can you explain the rule to me? Alebo: Can you explain to me how it works? Rovnako sa správajú describe something to someone a say something to someone.

Slovesá bez predložky. Opačná pasca: slovenské sloveso tu predložku má („diskutovať o“ → ✗ discuss about, „vojsť do“, „odpovedať na“) a ťahá ju do anglickej vety, hoci anglické sloveso sa zaobíde bez nej.

✗ ✓ po slovensky
discuss about the plan discuss the plan diskutovať o pláne
enter into the room enter the room vojsť do izby
answer to the question answer the question odpovedať na otázku
marry with him marry him vydať sa zaňho
phone to her phone her zavolať jej
reach to the station reach the station dostať sa na stanicu
join to the club join the club vstúpiť do klubu

Podstatné mená s predložkou. Podstatné mená majú svoje predložky, a často nie tie, čo príbuzné sloveso:

the reason for the delay dôvod meškania
the answer to the question odpoveď na otázku
a solution to the problem riešenie problému
the key to the door kľúč od dverí
an invitation to the party pozvanie na večierok
an interest in history záujem o históriu
the difference between them rozdiel medzi nimi
a problem with the car problém s autom

Prídavné mená s predložkou. Tretia časť toho istého systému. Aj po mnohých prídavných menách stojí vlastná predložka a zo slovenského prekladu sa nedá uhádnuť: „dobrý v matematike“ — good at maths, „hnevá sa na neho“ — angry with him. Spojenie sa učí celé:

good at / bad at She's good at maths.
interested in I'm interested in history.
afraid of He's afraid of dogs.
proud of We're proud of our daughter.
tired of I'm tired of waiting. — Už ma nebaví čakať.
keen on He's keen on football. — Futbal ho veľmi baví.
worried about They're worried about money.
angry with (na koho), about (kvôli čomu) She was angry with me about the car.
pleased with I'm pleased with the result.
different from My job is different from yours.
famous for The town is famous for its cheese.
full of The room was full of people.
married to She's married to a doctor.

Mnohé z nich sú tvary na -ed z B1 #26: interested in, worried about, disappointed with. Často má prídavné meno tú istú predložku ako príbuzné sloveso alebo podstatné meno: worry about — worried about, an interest in — interested in. tired a tired of sú rôzne veci: I'm tired — „som unavený“, I'm tired of it — „už ma to nebaví“. keen on je veľmi britské spojenie: I'm not keen on spicy food — „nie som veľký milovník štipľavého jedla“. Namiesto different from sa v britskej reči často hovorí different to; aj to je správne.

Porovnaj sloveso a podstatné meno z jedného koreňa:

Please answer the question. sloveso — bez predložky
What's the answer to the question? podstatné meno — s to
We discussed the plan. sloveso — bez predložky
We had a discussion about the plan. podstatné meno — s about

Po predložke stojí sloveso v tvare na -ing — po akejkoľvek: slovesnej, ako v I'm thinking about moving, Thanks for coming, She insisted on paying (B1 #16), aj po predložke prídavného mena: good at cooking, afraid of flying, tired of waiting.

Ďalšie príklady:

I agree with you, but it depends on the price.
What happened to your car? Čo sa stalo s tvojím autom?
He spent all his money on books. Všetky peniaze minul na knihy.
The team consists of six people. Tím sa skladá zo šiestich ľudí.

Takto sa nehovorí. ✗ What are you waiting? → ✓ What are you waiting for? Bez predložky na konci otázka stráca zmysel: wait a wait for sú rôzne slovesá.

Otestuj sa. Ako povedať „Závisí to od počasia“? Čo je zlé na We discussed about the price? Aké predložky stoja po good, afraid a proud?

zobraziť odpovede
It depends on the weather; discuss predložku neberie: We discussed the price; good at, afraid of, proud of.

Chyby slovensky hovoriacich

napísané pre váš jazyk
1

Predložka zo slovenčiny

✗ depend from → ✓ depend on. ✗ consist from → ✓ consist of. ✗ Look on this photo! → ✓ Look at this photo! ✗ the reason of the delay → ✓ the reason for the delay. „Závisieť od“, „skladať sa z“, „pozrieť sa na“, „dôvod meškania“ — slovenská predložka alebo genitív sa preloží priamo a vzniknú from, on a of. Anglickú predložku treba jednoducho poznať.

2

Chýbajúca predložka

✗ I listen music → ✓ I listen to music. ✗ I'm looking my keys → ✓ I'm looking for my keys. Po slovensky „počúvať hudbu“, „hľadať kľúče“ — predmet bez predložky, a anglická predložka sa zdá zbytočná. Lenže listen sa bez to s predmetom nespojí a look bez for neznamená „hľadať“.

3

Predložka navyše

✗ discuss about the plan

✗ answer on the question

✗ enter into the room

✗ marry with her

✓ discuss the plan

answer the question, enter the room, marry her. „Diskutovať o pláne“, „odpovedať na otázku“, „vojsť do izby“, „oženiť sa s ňou“ — slovenské sloveso ťahá predložku so sebou a about, on, into, with sa presťahujú do anglickej vety.

4

explain me

✗ Explain me the rule → ✓ Explain the rule to me. ✗ Can you explain me how it works? → ✓ Can you explain to me how it works? Slovenské „mi“ sa postaví hneď za sloveso, ako v give me a show me. Ale explain to nevie: toho, komu sa vysvetľuje, pripája len cez to.

5

Predložka po prídavnom mene zo slovenčiny

✗ good in maths → ✓ good at maths („dobrý v matematike“). ✗ angry on him → ✓ angry with him („nahnevaný na neho“). ✗ proud on our daughter → ✓ proud of our daughter („hrdý na dcéru“). ✗ married with a doctor → ✓ married to a doctor („ženatý s“). Slovenská predložka napovedá svoj variant a anglické spojenie sa s ním kryje len náhodou. Spojenie married with children existuje, ale znamená niečo iné: „ženatý, má deti“.

Výslovnosť

3 min

Vnútri vety je predložka neprízvučná: for /fə/, to /tə/, at /ət/, of /əv/, from /frəm/. I'm waiting for the bus — /aɪm ˈweɪtɪŋ fə ðə ˈbʌs/.

Who are you waiting for? — /fɔː/, Who does it belong to? — /tuː/, What are you looking at? — /æt/. Slabý tvar sa na konci vety nepoužíva.

Sloveso a predložka splývajú do jedného slova: depends on /dɪˈpendz ɒn/, look at /ˈlʊk ət/, listen to /ˈlɪsn tə/ — písmeno t v listen sa nečíta.

Hi Sam,

Thanks for your message, and sorry I didn't reply to it sooner — it's been a busy week.

You asked about the job in Bristol. I applied for it at the start of the month, and on Monday I had the interview. They asked me a lot of questions about my last job and my reasons for leaving it. The answer to the last question took me ages: "What are you most proud of?" I'm still waiting for their decision, and I'm not very good at waiting. It depends on two things — how many other people they've interviewed and whether the manager agrees with me about the salary. We discussed it for half an hour, and I'm not sure we found a solution to the problem.

If I get the job, we'll have to look for a flat in Bristol. Anna doesn't worry about things like that, but I do. And who's going to look after Mum? She hates asking anyone for help, and she never listens to anybody but me.

Anyway, enough about me. What are you working on at the moment? And have you found out who that old bike in your garden belongs to?

Love, Kate
