文法

遅刻の説明では、ふつう2つの過去時制をいっしょに使います（第2課）：背景と出来事です。

I was waiting for the bus when it started to rain.
While I was driving, the car broke down.
I was walking to the station when I saw the accident.

原因と結果 — 4つの言葉があり、後ろに来るものと順番が違います：

後ろに来るもの 例
because 原因 I was late because the bus didn't come.
so 結果 The bus didn't come, so I was late.
because of 原因（名詞で） I was late because of the traffic.
that's why 結果 The bus didn't come. That's why I was late.

because は文の前に、because of は名詞の前に置きます。別の形なので、混同しないようにしましょう。

道のりを話すときの移動の前置詞（A1の第22課のおさらい）：get to work、 walk across the park、drive past the station、go along the street。

「遅れてすみません」を sorry for late にする。

late は「遅れている」という意味の形容詞なので、for のあとには置けません。I'm sorry のあとに I'm late という文をそのまま続けます。

because の部分だけで1つの文にする。

✗ I was late. Because the bus didn't come.

✓ I was late because the bus didn't come.

A1の第11課と同じです。「なぜなら〜からです」と文を分けず、書き言葉では because を前の文につなげます。

「〜のため」の感覚で because of に文を続ける。

または because of the bus。日本語の「ため」は「事故のため」にも「バスが来なかったため」にも使えますが、英語では文の前は because、名詞の前は because of です。

発音

単語の境目で子音と母音がつながり、フレーズは1つの長い単語のように聞こえます：

語末の子音は、次の語が母音で始まると、その語の頭に移ります：「ゴット・アップ」ではなく「ゴタップ」、「アン・アクシデント」ではなく「アナクシデント」です。カタカナのように子音のあとに母音を足すと、このつながりが切れてしまいます。これはいいかげんな発音ではなく、英語のリズムの基本です。
