I was waiting for the bus when it started to rain.
While I was driving, the car broke down.
I was walking to the station when I saw the accident.

because la causa I was late because the bus didn't come.
so la conseguenza The bus didn't come, so I was late.
because of la causa, con un NOME I was late because of the traffic.
that's why la conseguenza The bus didn't come. That's why I was late.

because va davanti a una frase intera, because of davanti a un nome: come «perché» e «a causa di». Sono costruzioni diverse, e non si possono scambiare. so corrisponde a «quindi», that's why a «ecco perché».

Le preposizioni di movimento per raccontare il tragitto (ripasso della lezione A1 #22): get to work, walk across the park, drive past the station, go along the street.

Errori tipici degli italofoni

adattato alla tua lingua
1

Il «per» della causa tradotto con for

«Ero in ritardo per il traffico» → ✗ I was late for the traffic → ✓ I was late because of the traffic. Quando «per» indica la causa, davanti a un nome è because of, davanti a una frase because.

2

«Per questo» parola per parola

✗ For this I was late

✓ That's why I was late

o …, so I was late.

3

L'imperfetto reso con il Past Simple

«Aspettavo l'autobus quando ha cominciato a piovere» → ✗ I waited for the bus when it started to rain → ✓ I was waiting.

4

«Scusa il ritardo»

✗ Sorry for the late

✓ Sorry I'm late

o I'm sorry I'm late. late non è un nome come «ritardo», ma un aggettivo: I'm late, I was late.

Pronuncia

3 min

an accident /əˈnæksɪdənt/
because of /bɪˈkɒzəv/
got up /ɡɒˈtʌp/
