Razlaga zamude sta navadno dva pretekla časa skupaj (lekcija 2): ozadje in dogodek.

I was waiting for the bus when it started to rain.
While I was driving, the car broke down.
I was walking to the station when I saw the accident.

Vzrok in posledica — štirje izrazi, vsak s svojim vrstnim redom:

because of vzrok s SAMOSTALNIKOM I was late because of the traffic.

because stoji pred celo povedjo (kot „ker“), because of — pred samostalnikom (kot „zaradi“). To sta različni zgradbi in ju ne smemo zamenjevati.

ali because of the bus. Pogovorni „zaradi tega, ker“ zavede, da because of postaviš pred celo poved; tam zadošča because = „ker“. Za because of = „zaradi“ pride samo samostalnik.

„Čakal sem“ se zdi kar I waited, saj ima slovenščina en sam preteklik. Ozadje, v katero je vstopil dogodek, pa v angleščini potrebuje was + -ing (lekcija 2).

traffic je neštevni samostalnik kot money (lekcija 13): brez a, z a lot of.

Na mejah besed se soglasniki povežejo in fraza zveni kot ena dolga beseda:

Končni soglasnik preide k naslednji besedi, če se ta začne s samoglasnikom. Ne izgovarjaj besedo za besedo, s premorom vmes: povezovanje ni malomarnost, ampak temelj angleškega ritma.
