I hardly know him.
She's hardly ever at home.
We rarely go to the cinema.
I can hardly hear you.
I've hardly slept this week.

hardly — 정도에 대한 '거의 ~않다, 겨우': I could hardly breathe. 특히 can, could와 자주 쓰입니다: I can hardly wait!

It hardly ever snows here. 이것은 rarely와 never 사이의 단계입니다: always → usually → often → sometimes → rarely → hardly ever → never.

rarely — '드물게', 더 담담한 말입니다: I rarely eat meat.

짧은 대답에서는 이 단어들이 동사 없이 혼자 옵니다: — Do you see your cousins? — Hardly ever. — Do you go to concerts? — Rarely. I don't go very often, I don't really know him.

hardly any, hardly anyone. any와 그 파생어(A2 14과)와 함께 쓰면 '거의 없다'가 됩니다: There's hardly any milk left. Hardly anyone came. There's hardly anything in the fridge.

단어가 이미 부정이므로, 옆에 not을 붙이면 이중 부정이 되는데, 표준 영어에는 이중 부정이 없습니다: ✗ I don't hardly know him → ✓ I hardly know him. neither … nor(B1 6과)와 nobody(A2 14과)의 규칙과 같습니다. 그래서 hardly 뒤에는 no가 아니라 any가 옵니다: hardly any time, ✗ hardly no time은 아닙니다.

동사 앞의 '거의 안/못'은 hardly + not 없는 동사입니다; 빈도의 '거의 ~하는 일이 없다'는 hardly ever; '거의 없다', '거의 아무도', '거의 아무것도'는 hardly any, hardly anyone, hardly anything.

She works hard.
She hardly works.

✗ I go hardly ever to the cinema → ✓ I hardly ever go to the cinema.

He works hard와 He hardly works는 각각 무슨 뜻입니까? There's hardly no time은 무엇이 잘못되었습니까?

I hardly know my neighbours; There's hardly any time.
