Ngữ pháp

Bài này gom lại hai chủ đề còn dang dở ở A2. Thứ nhất — khả năng và thành công: can (A1 #20) có quá ít dạng. Thứ hai — quy định: bên cạnh must, have to (A2 #10) và should (A2 #11) có thêm “theo quy định thì phải”, “được phép” và “không cần”.

be able to — khả năng ở mọi thì. can chỉ có hai dạng: can và could. Nó không có thì tương lai, thì hoàn thành, dạng đứng sau động từ khác — ở những chỗ đó dùng be able to.

tương lai I'll be able to swim by the summer.
thì hoàn thành I haven't been able to sleep this week.
sau động từ khác I'd like to be able to speak French.
sau động từ khuyết thiếu You might be able to get a ticket online.
quá khứ I wasn't able to come yesterday.

Ở thì hiện tại thường nói can: I can swim nghe tự nhiên hơn I'm able to swim.

Biết làm hay đã làm được? Ở thì quá khứ, tiếng Anh phân biệt điều mà tiếng Việt thường gộp vào “có thể”, “được”. could — khả năng nói chung, trong một khoảng thời gian: I could read when I was four. Thành công trong một lần cụ thể — was able to hoặc managed to. managed to nhấn mạnh: khó khăn, nhưng đã làm được.

I could swim when I was six. Sáu tuổi đã biết bơi.
The water was cold, but I managed to swim to the boat.

Vì vậy nó hay đi kèm but và in the end: It took three hours, but in the end we managed to fix it. Nếu không có khó khăn gì, thường chỉ dùng Past Simple: I finished the report on Friday.

be supposed to — theo quy định, theo thỏa thuận. You're supposed to take your shoes off in the house. — phong tục là vậy. I'm supposed to be at work at nine. — đã thỏa thuận như vậy. Dạng này thường ngầm cho biết thực tế lại khác: I'm supposed to be working, but I'm watching football. Ở thì quá khứ, nó gần như luôn có nghĩa “lẽ ra phải…, nhưng đã không xảy ra”: The train was supposed to arrive at six. — nhưng tàu đến lúc bảy giờ. not supposed to — lời cấm nhẹ nhàng theo quy định, nhẹ hơn mustn't: You're not supposed to park here. supposed ở đây là tính từ, nên luôn cần be: I'm supposed to, Were we supposed to…?

So sánh với have to. I have to be at work at nine — tôi không có lựa chọn: đến muộn sẽ gặp rắc rối. I'm supposed to be at work at nine — quy định là vậy, nhưng nghe như có thể vi phạm, và có khi tôi sẽ vi phạm thật. Vì thế be supposed to rất hợp khi bạn giải thích vì sao việc gì đó không diễn ra theo kế hoạch.

be allowed to — được phép.

câu khẳng định We're allowed to use dictionaries in the exam.
câu phủ định You aren't allowed to smoke on the train.
câu hỏi Are we allowed to take photos?
quá khứ I wasn't allowed to stay out late as a child.
tương lai Next year students will be allowed to use phones in class.

can hay be allowed to? Ở thì hiện tại, khi nói về sự cho phép, người ta thường chỉ dùng can: You can park here after six. be allowed to nhấn mạnh rằng sự cho phép đến từ quy định hoặc từ người khác, nên nghe chính xác hơn khi thông báo hay hỏi về quy định: Are we allowed to bring food into the museum? Ở thì tương lai và thì hoàn thành, can không có dạng, và bắt buộc phải dùng be allowed to — giống như be able to: Will we be allowed to park here? Về quá khứ, ranh giới cũng như giữa could và managed to: could — sự cho phép nói chung, trong thời gian dài (As a child I could watch TV until nine), was allowed to — sự cho phép trong một lần (Yesterday we were allowed to leave early).

supposed to hay allowed to?

You're supposed to wear a helmet. theo quy định thì phải: đây là bổn phận
You're allowed to bring one bag. được phép: đây là sự cho phép
You're not supposed to park here. theo quy định thì không nên — nói nhẹ nhàng, và nhiều người vẫn đỗ
You're not allowed to park here. bị cấm — nói thẳng, không rào đón

don't need to — không cần thiết. Giống don't have to (A2 #10): không làm cũng được. need ở đây là động từ thường có to, nên câu phủ định, câu hỏi và quá khứ cấu tạo với do: You don't need to come tomorrow. Does she need to bring anything? We didn't need to wait. Đừng nhầm với mustn't và not allowed to — “không được”: You don't need to come — không đến cũng được; You aren't allowed to come — cấm đến.

Cả thang trên một ví dụ:

I must finish today. tự tôi quyết định
I have to finish today. hoàn cảnh bắt buộc
I'm supposed to finish today. đã thỏa thuận — nhưng có kịp không?
I should finish today. làm vậy thì đúng hơn
I'm allowed to finish tomorrow. được phép làm xong vào ngày mai
I don't need to finish today. không làm cũng được
I mustn't forget the figures. không được

Không nói như vậy. ✗ We didn't need come so early → ✓ We didn't need to come so early. didn't need — động từ thường, và sau nó cần to.

Kiểm tra nhanh. could hay managed to: “khó lắm, nhưng tôi đã kịp chuyến tàu”? The film was supposed to start at eight có nghĩa gì? Nói “ở chỗ làm chúng tôi không được phép dùng điện thoại” thế nào?

hiện đáp án
managed to — thành công trong một lần: It was difficult, but I managed to catch the train; bộ phim lẽ ra phải bắt đầu lúc tám giờ, nhưng đã bắt đầu muộn hơn hoặc hoàn toàn không chiếu; We aren't allowed to use our phones at work / We're not allowed to use our phones at work.

1

Hai động từ khuyết thiếu liền nhau

✗ I will can swim

✓ I'll be able to swim

“Sẽ có thể bơi” — dịch từng chữ ra will + can. Nhưng trong tiếng Anh hai động từ khuyết thiếu không đứng cạnh nhau; chỗ thứ hai dành cho be able to.

2

could cho thành công trong một lần

✗ The exam was hard, but I could pass it

✓ The exam was hard, but I managed to pass it / I was able to pass it

“Đã thi đỗ được”, “đã có thể” khiến could trông như bản dịch chính xác. Nhưng could trong câu khẳng định là khả năng nói chung, không phải thành công trong lần đó.

3

supposed to và allowed to thiếu be

✗ I supposed to be there at nine → ✓ I'm supposed to be there at nine. ✗ We not allowed to smoke, ✗ We don't allowed to smoke → ✓ We aren't allowed to smoke. “Chúng tôi không được phép” không có “là”, nên be dễ bị bỏ, còn phủ định thì ghép bằng not hoặc don't. Nhưng cả hai cấu trúc đều cần be, và phủ định đi qua be. Tiếng Việt không có cụm phụ âm cuối, nên -d khi nói dễ bị nuốt, và khi viết cũng mất theo: ✗ suppose to, ✗ allow to → ✓ supposed to, allowed to.

4

Câu không có chủ ngữ

✗ Here is not allowed to smoke

✗ It isn't allowed to smoke here

✓ You aren't allowed to smoke here

“Ở đây không được hút thuốc” không có chủ ngữ, nên người học đưa Here hoặc It lên đầu câu. Nhưng chủ ngữ của be allowed to là người được phép hoặc bị cấm: You aren't allowed, Passengers aren't allowed. Muốn gọi tên chính điều bị cấm thì nó làm chủ ngữ: Pets aren't allowed, còn biển báo chỉ ghi No smoking.

Phát âm

4 phút

supposed to — /səˈpəʊs tə/: -d và t hòa thành một âm /t/. Âm tiết đầu không nhấn — /sə/, trọng âm rơi vào âm tiết thứ hai: su-POSED.

able — /ˈeɪbl/, với /eɪ/ được nhấn, như trong table. be able to đọc liền một hơi: /bi ˈeɪbl tə/; to — yếu, /tə/.

managed to — /ˈmænɪdʒ tə/: /d/ trước /t/ gần như mất. Tương tự trong allowed to /əˈlaʊd tə/: /d/ và /t/ hòa làm một, như trong supposed to. allowed nghe như loud có thêm /ə/ yếu ở trước — và giống hệt aloud “thành tiếng”.

Hi Claire,

I'm afraid the report isn't ready yet. I was supposed to send it to you yesterday, but I wasn't able to finish it. At four o'clock my laptop suddenly stopped working, and nobody in IT could fix it the same day.

The good news is that I managed to save most of the file — I only lost the last two pages. Sam has lent me his old laptop, and I'm allowed to keep it until Friday, so I'll be able to finish everything this morning. You'll have it by twelve.

You don't need to move the meeting with the client. The figures are all correct — I checked them twice on Monday. But I'm supposed to show the report to Mark first, and he's working from home today. Do you need to see it too, or can I send it straight to him?

One more thing: we're not supposed to leave laptops in the office overnight, but mine stayed there because it wasn't working. I hope that's all right.

Sorry again, Ben

Mẫu

Yesterday I was supposed to meet a client at ten, but I wasn't able to get there on time. There was an accident on the motorway, and the traffic didn't move for an hour. I managed to call the client from the car, and she was very kind about it. In the end we had the meeting online. So now I don't need to drive to her office next week. I hope I'll be able to meet her in person next month.
