Oppitunti kokoaa kaksi aihetta, jotka jäivät A2-tasolla vajaiksi. Ensimmäinen on taito ja onnistuminen: can-verbillä (A1 #20) on liian vähän muotoja. Toinen on säännöt: must- ja have to (A2 #10) sekä should (A2 #11) -verbien rinnalle tulevat ”niin kuuluu”, ”niin saa” ja ”niin ei tarvitse”.

be able to — taito missä tahansa aikamuodossa. can-verbillä on vain kaksi muotoa: can ja could. Tulevaa aikaa, perfektiä tai muotoa toisen verbin jälkeen sillä ei ole — niissä toimii be able to.

tuleva aika I'll be able to swim by the summer.
perfekti I haven't been able to sleep this week.
toisen verbin jälkeen I'd like to be able to speak French.
modaaliverbin jälkeen You might be able to get a ticket online.
mennyt aika I wasn't able to come yesterday.

Preesensissä sanotaan yleensä can: I can swim kuulostaa luontevammalta kuin I'm able to swim.

I could read when I was four. Onnistuminen yhdessä tietyssä tilanteessa on was able to tai managed to. managed to korostaa: oli vaikeaa, mutta onnistui.

I could swim when I was six. Osasin uida kuusivuotiaana.
The water was cold, but I managed to swim to the boat. Onnistuin uimaan veneelle — sillä kertaa.

Kiellossa tätä eroa ei ole, couldn't käy aina: I couldn't find my keys this morning. Aistimista ilmaisevien verbien see, hear kanssa could käy myös yksittäisestä kerrasta: I could hear music next door.

was able to ja managed to ovat myönteisessä lauseessa lähes samanarvoiset, mutta managed to kertoo suoraan vaikeudesta ja ponnistelusta. Siksi sen seurana on niin usein but ja in the end: It took three hours, but in the end we managed to fix it. Jos vaikeutta ei ollut, käytetään yleensä pelkkää Past Simpleä: I finished the report on Friday.

be supposed to — niin kuuluu, niin on sovittu. Velvollisuus ei tule puhujalta eikä laista, vaan säännöistä, sopimuksesta tai muiden odotuksista. You're supposed to take your shoes off in the house. — niin on tapana. I'm supposed to be at work at nine. — niin on sovittu. Usein tästä muodosta kuulee, että todellisuudessa käy toisin: I'm supposed to be working, but I'm watching football. Menneessä ajassa se on lähes aina ”piti, mutta ei tapahtunut”: The train was supposed to arrive at six. — mutta tuli seitsemältä. not supposed to on pehmeä sääntöihin perustuva kielto, pehmeämpi kuin mustn't: You're not supposed to park here. supposed on tässä adjektiivi, joten be tarvitaan aina: I'm supposed to, Were we supposed to…?

Vertaa have to -rakenteeseen. I have to be at work at nine — minulla ei ole valinnanvaraa: jos myöhästyn, tulee ongelmia. I'm supposed to be at work at nine — sääntö on tämä, mutta kuulostaa siltä, että sen voi rikkoa, ja ehkä rikonkin. Siksi be supposed to sopii hyvin, kun selität, miksi jokin ei mennyt suunnitelman mukaan.

be allowed to — niin saa, se on sallittua. Luvan antaa joku muu: säännöt, laki, vanhemmat, esimies. allowed on allow-verbin (”sallia”) kolmas muoto, joten rakenne on passiivi, tuttu ilmoituksesta Pets aren't allowed (A2 #19): ei ”minä sallin”, vaan ”minulle on sallittu”. be taipuu persoonissa ja aikamuodoissa, allowed to + verbi pysyy samana.

myönteinen We're allowed to use dictionaries in the exam.
kielteinen You aren't allowed to smoke on the train.
kysymys Are we allowed to take photos?
mennyt aika I wasn't allowed to stay out late as a child.
tuleva aika Next year students will be allowed to use phones in class.

can vai be allowed to? Preesensissä luvasta sanotaan usein pelkkä can: You can park here after six. be allowed to korostaa, että lupa tulee säännöistä tai toiselta ihmiseltä, ja kuulostaa siksi täsmällisemmältä, kun säännöistä kerrotaan tai kysytään: Are we allowed to bring food into the museum? Tulevassa ajassa ja perfektissä can-verbillä ei ole muotoa, ja be allowed to on pakollinen — samoin kuin be able to: Will we be allowed to park here? Menneestä raja on sama kuin could- ja managed to -muodoilla: could on lupa yleensä, pitkäksi aikaa (As a child I could watch TV until nine), was allowed to — lupa yhdellä kertaa (Yesterday we were allowed to leave early).

supposed to vai allowed to? Molemmat koskevat sääntöjä, mutta kertovat eri asioista. supposed to — mitä kuuluu tehdä, allowed to — mitä saa tehdä. Kiellossa ero on voimakkuudessa:

You're supposed to wear a helmet. niin kuuluu: se on velvollisuus
You're allowed to bring one bag. niin saa: se on lupa
You're not supposed to park here. niin ei kuulu tehdä — pehmeästi, ja moni pysäköi silti
You're not allowed to park here. kielletty — suoraan, ilman varauksia

don't need to — ei ole tarpeen. Se on sama kuin don't have to (A2 #10): saa jättää tekemättä. need on tässä tavallinen verbi, jonka jälkeen tulee to, joten kielto, kysymys ja mennyt aika muodostetaan do-apuverbillä: You don't need to come tomorrow. Does she need to bring anything? We didn't need to wait. Älä sekoita sitä rakenteisiin mustn't ja not allowed to — ”ei saa”: You don't need to come — ei tarvitse tulla; You aren't allowed to come — tuleminen on kielletty.

Koko asteikko yhdessä esimerkissä:

I must finish today. päätin niin itse
I have to finish today. olosuhteet vaativat
I'm supposed to finish today. niin sovittiin — mutta ehdinkö?
I should finish today. olisi oikein
I'm allowed to finish tomorrow. sain luvan lopettaa huomenna
I don't need to finish today. ei tarvitse
I mustn't forget the figures. ei saa

Näin ei sanota. ✗ We didn't need come so early → ✓ We didn't need to come so early. didn't need on tavallinen verbi, ja sen jälkeen tarvitaan to.

Testaa itsesi. could vai managed to: ”oli vaikeaa, mutta ehdin junaan”? Mitä tarkoittaa The film was supposed to start at eight? Miten sanotaan ”emme saa käyttää puhelimia töissä”?

managed to — onnistuminen yhdellä kertaa: It was difficult, but I managed to catch the train; elokuvan piti alkaa kahdeksalta, mutta se alkoi myöhemmin tai ei alkanut lainkaan; We aren't allowed to use our phones at work / We're not allowed to use our phones at work.

Suomenkielisten virheet

kirjoitettu omalle kielellesi
1

Tuleva taito preesensillä

✗ I can swim by the summer

✓ I'll be able to swim by the summer

Suomen ”osaan uida kesään mennessä” on preesensissä, ja can tuntuu riittävän. can kertoo kuitenkin taidosta nyt. will + can ei sekään käy (✗ I will can swim): kaksi modaaliverbiä ei seiso peräkkäin, ja toiselle paikalle tulee be able to.

2

”Pystyin” onnistumisesta

✗ The exam was hard, but I could pass it

✓ The exam was hard, but I managed to pass it / I was able to pass it

”Pystyin”, ”voin” ja ”sain” kääntyvät helposti could-sanaksi. Myönteinen could tarkoittaa kuitenkin yleistä taitoa, ei onnistumista sillä kertaa.

3

”Piti” kahdessa merkityksessä

”Minun piti lähettää se eilen” voi tarkoittaa sekä ”oli pakko” että ”oli sovittu, mutta en lähettänyt”. I had to send it yesterday kertoo pakosta, ja kuulija ymmärtää, että lähetit sen. Jos asia jäi tekemättä, tarvitaan ✓ I was supposed to send it yesterday, but I didn't.

4

be puuttuu

✗ I supposed to be there at nine → ✓ I'm supposed to be there at nine. ✗ We don't allowed to smoke → ✓ We aren't allowed to smoke.

5

Persoonaton ”täällä ei saa”

✗ It isn't allowed to smoke here

✓ You aren't allowed to smoke here

Suomen ”täällä ei saa tupakoida” on ilman subjektia, ja englannin lause alkaa helposti It-sanalla. be allowed to -rakenteen subjekti on kuitenkin se, jolle lupa annetaan tai jolta se kielletään: You, Passengers. Kiellon kohteesta sanotaan Pets aren't allowed, kyltissä No smoking.

Ääntäminen

supposed to — /səˈpəʊs tə/: -d ja t sulautuvat yhdeksi /t/-äänteeksi. Ensimmäinen tavu on painoton — /sə/, paino on toisella: su-POSED.

able — /ˈeɪbl/, painollinen /eɪ/ kuten sanassa table. be able to sanotaan kokonaan, yhdellä hengenvedolla: /bi ˈeɪbl tə/; to on heikko /tə/.

managed to — /ˈmænɪdʒ tə/: /d/ melkein katoaa /t/-äänteen edellä. Samoin allowed to /əˈlaʊd tə/: /d/ ja /t/ sulautuvat kuten supposed to -rakenteessa. allowed kuulostaa sanalta loud, jonka edessä on heikko /ə/ — ja täsmälleen samalta kuin aloud ”ääneen”.

Hi Claire,

I'm afraid the report isn't ready yet. I was supposed to send it to you yesterday, but I wasn't able to finish it. At four o'clock my laptop suddenly stopped working, and nobody in IT could fix it the same day.

The good news is that I managed to save most of the file — I only lost the last two pages. Sam has lent me his old laptop, and I'm allowed to keep it until Friday, so I'll be able to finish everything this morning. You'll have it by twelve.

You don't need to move the meeting with the client. The figures are all correct — I checked them twice on Monday. But I'm supposed to show the report to Mark first, and he's working from home today. Do you need to see it too, or can I send it straight to him?

One more thing: we're not supposed to leave laptops in the office overnight, but mine stayed there because it wasn't working. I hope that's all right.

Sorry again, Ben

Yesterday I was supposed to meet a client at ten, but I wasn't able to get there on time. There was an accident on the motorway, and the traffic didn't move for an hour. I managed to call the client from the car, and she was very kind about it. In the end we had the meeting online. So now I don't need to drive to her office next week. I hope I'll be able to meet her in person next month.
