be able to — zmožnost v vsakem času. can ima samo dve obliki: can in could. Prihodnjika, perfekta in oblike za drugim glagolom nima — tam deluje be able to.

prihodnjik I'll be able to swim by the summer.
perfekt I haven't been able to sleep this week.
za drugim glagolom I'd like to be able to speak French.
za modalnim glagolom You might be able to get a ticket online.
preteklik I wasn't able to come yesterday.

V sedanjiku običajno rečemo can: I can swim zveni naravneje kot I'm able to swim.

Znal ali uspel? V pretekliku angleščina loči dvoje, kar loči tudi slovenščina: „znal sem“ in „uspelo mi je“. could — zmožnost nasploh, skozi neko obdobje: I could read when I was four.

I could swim when I was six. Pri šestih sem znal plavati.
The water was cold, but I managed to swim to the boat. Uspelo mi je priplavati do čolna — tisti enkrat.

V nikalnici te razlike ni, couldn't je primeren vedno: I couldn't find my keys this morning. Z glagoli zaznavanja see, hear je could o enkratnem primeru tudi v redu: I could hear music next door.

Zato ga tako pogosto spremljata but in in the end: It took three hours, but in the end we managed to fix it. Če težav ni bilo, običajno rečemo kar Past Simple: I finished the report on Friday.

You're supposed to take your shoes off in the house. — tako je navada. I'm supposed to be at work at nine. — tako je dogovorjeno. Pogosto se v tej obliki sliši, da je v resnici drugače: I'm supposed to be working, but I'm watching football. V pretekliku skoraj vedno pomeni „naj bi bilo, a se ni zgodilo“: The train was supposed to arrive at six. — prišel pa je ob sedmih. not supposed to je mehka prepoved po pravilih, mehkejša od mustn't: You're not supposed to park here. supposed je tu pridevnik, zato je be potreben vedno: I'm supposed to, Were we supposed to…?

Primerjaj s have to. I have to be at work at nine — izbire nimam: če zamudim, bodo težave.

trdilna poved We're allowed to use dictionaries in the exam.
nikalna poved You aren't allowed to smoke on the train.
vprašanje Are we allowed to take photos?
preteklik I wasn't allowed to stay out late as a child.
prihodnjik Next year students will be allowed to use phones in class.

can ali be allowed to? V sedanjiku o dovoljenju pogosto rečemo kar can: You can park here after six. be allowed to poudari, da dovoljenje prihaja od pravil ali od drugega človeka, zato zveni natančneje, ko o pravilih obveščamo ali sprašujemo: Are we allowed to bring food into the museum? V prihodnjiku in perfektu can nima oblike, in be allowed to je nujen — tako kot be able to: Will we be allowed to park here? O preteklosti je meja ista kot pri could in managed to: could — dovoljenje nasploh, za daljši čas (As a child I could watch TV until nine), was allowed to — dovoljenje v enem primeru (Yesterday we were allowed to leave early).

You're not supposed to park here. tega naj ne bi delali — mehko, in mnogi vseeno parkirajo
You're not allowed to park here. prepovedano — naravnost, brez pridržkov

don't need to — ni potrebe. To je isto kot don't have to (A2 #10): lahko ne narediš. need je tu navaden glagol s to, zato se nikalnica, vprašanje in preteklik tvorijo z do: You don't need to come tomorrow. Does she need to bring anything? We didn't need to wait. Ne zamenjuj ga z mustn't in not allowed to — „ne smeš“: You don't need to come — ni ti treba priti; You aren't allowed to come — priti je prepovedano.

Vsa lestvica na enem primeru:

I must finish today. sam sem se tako odločil
I have to finish today. zahtevajo okoliščine
I should finish today. bilo bi prav
I'm allowed to finish tomorrow. dovolili so mi končati jutri
I don't need to finish today. ni mi treba
I mustn't forget the figures. ne smem

Tako se ne reče. ✗ We didn't need come so early → ✓ We didn't need to come so early. didn't need je navaden glagol, in za njim je potreben to.

Kaj pomeni The film was supposed to start at eight? Kako rečeš „v službi ne smemo uporabljati telefonov“?

prikaži odgovore
managed to — uspeh v enem primeru: It was difficult, but I managed to catch the train; film naj bi se začel ob osmih, a se je začel pozneje ali pa sploh ne; We aren't allowed to use our phones at work / We're not allowed to use our phones at work.

Napake govorcev slovenščine

prirejeno za vaš jezik
1

Dva modalna glagola zapored

✗ I will can swim

✓ I'll be able to swim

Slovenski „bom lahko“, „bom znal“ se tvori kot vsak prihodnjik, zato ga sestavimo iz will in can. A dva modalna glagola zapored v angleščini ne stojita; drugo mesto zasede be able to.

2

could o uspehu v enem primeru

✗ The exam was hard, but I could pass it

✓ The exam was hard, but I managed to pass it / I was able to pass it

A could v trdilni povedi pomeni zmožnost nasploh, ne uspeha tisti enkrat. Pomaga slovensko „uspelo mi je“ — to je managed to.

3

supposed to in allowed to brez be

✗ I supposed to be there at nine → ✓ I'm supposed to be there at nine. ✗ We don't allowed to smoke → ✓ We aren't allowed to smoke.

4

Brezosebno „ni dovoljeno“

✗ It isn't allowed to smoke here

✓ You aren't allowed to smoke here

Če hočeš imenovati sam predmet prepovedi, postane osebek on: Pets aren't allowed, na tabli pa piše kar No smoking.

Izgovorjava

4 min

supposed to — /səˈpəʊs tə/: -d in t se zlijeta v en /t/.

managed to — /ˈmænɪdʒ tə/: /d/ pred /t/ skoraj izgine.

Hi Claire,

I'm afraid the report isn't ready yet. I was supposed to send it to you yesterday, but I wasn't able to finish it. At four o'clock my laptop suddenly stopped working, and nobody in IT could fix it the same day.

The good news is that I managed to save most of the file — I only lost the last two pages. Sam has lent me his old laptop, and I'm allowed to keep it until Friday, so I'll be able to finish everything this morning. You'll have it by twelve.

You don't need to move the meeting with the client. The figures are all correct — I checked them twice on Monday. But I'm supposed to show the report to Mark first, and he's working from home today. Do you need to see it too, or can I send it straight to him?

One more thing: we're not supposed to leave laptops in the office overnight, but mine stayed there because it wasn't working. I hope that's all right.

Sorry again, Ben

Zgled

Yesterday I was supposed to meet a client at ten, but I wasn't able to get there on time. There was an accident on the motorway, and the traffic didn't move for an hour. I managed to call the client from the car, and she was very kind about it. In the end we had the meeting online. So now I don't need to drive to her office next week. I hope I'll be able to meet her in person next month.
