A2 18과에서 그만둔 일을 말하는 법을 배웠습니다: I don't work there any more — '나는 더 이상 거기서 일하지 않는다'. 이 not … any more에는 부정이 이미 안에 들어 있는 문어적인 짝이 있습니다: no longer. hardly(B1 12과)와 같은 원리입니다: 단어 자체가 부정이므로, 그 옆에 not을 또 두지 않습니다.

I no longer work there. 나는 더 이상 거기서 일하지 않는다.

She's no longer a child. 그녀는 이제 아이가 아니다.
The shop is no longer open on Sundays. 그 가게는 이제 일요일에 문을 열지 않는다.

We no longer have a car. 우리는 이제 차가 없다.

위치. no longer는 빈도부사(A1 11과)나 hardly와 같은 자리에 옵니다: 본동사 앞(I no longer work), 하지만 be 뒤(She's no longer), 그리고 조동사 뒤(You can no longer pay). any more는 문장 맨 끝에 옵니다.

not … any longer는 not … any more와 같은 뜻이고, 역시 끝에 옵니다: I can't wait any longer. — '더 이상 못 기다리겠어.' wait, stay와 특히 자주 씁니다: We couldn't stay any longer.

어디서 무엇을 쓰는가. 대화에서는 거의 언제나 not … any more입니다. no longer는 글, 안내문, 뉴스, 공식 편지에서 씁니다: This service is no longer available. — '이 서비스는 더 이상 제공되지 않습니다.' 말로 할 때 no longer는 더 딱딱하게 들리고, 변화를 강조합니다.

질문과 짧은 대답에서는 still과 any more를 씁니다: — Do you still live in Bath? — No, not any more. 한 마디로 No longer라고 대답하면 문어적으로 들립니다.

no longer와 no more를 헷갈리지 마십시오. no longer는 시간에 대한 것입니다: 전에는 그랬는데 지금은 아니다. no more + 명사는 양에 대한 것입니다: There's no more coffee. — '커피가 더 없다, 다 떨어졌다.' ✗ I no more work there → ✓ I no longer work there.

still과 비교해 보십시오:

He still lives with his parents. 아직도 산다
He no longer lives with his parents. 더 이상 살지 않는다

한국어 문장으로 고르는 법. 변화를 말하는 '더 이상 ~않다', '이제 ~아니다', '이제 ~지 않는다'는 no longer나 not … any more입니다. '그는 예전의 그가 아니다' — He's no longer the same. '그건 이제 비밀이 아니다' — It's no longer a secret. '이제 그건 필요 없어' — I no longer need it 또는 I don't need it any more. '안', '-지 않다'의 부정을 따로 영어 문장에 옮기지 마십시오: hardly처럼 no longer 안에 이미 들어 있습니다. '더 이상'이 '이제 한순간도 더는', '이제 그만'이라는 뜻이라면 not … any longer를 쓰십시오: '더 이상은 못 참겠어' — I can't stand it any longer.

철자. 영국 영어에서는 보통 any more로 띄어 씁니다; 붙여 쓰는 anymore는 미국 영어에서 왔고, 영국에서도 점점 더 자주 보입니다. 어느 쪽도 오류로 보지 않습니다; 이 과정에서는 A2 18과처럼 띄어 씁니다. no longer는 언제나 띄어 씁니다.

이렇게 말하지 않습니다. ✗ I don't no longer work there → ✓ I no longer work there. no longer에는 이미 부정이 있습니다. 부정을 하나 더 넣으면 이중 부정이 되는데, 표준 영어에는 이중 부정이 없습니다.

확인해 보십시오. She doesn't live here any more를 문어적으로 말하면? I can't wait no longer에서 무엇이 틀렸습니까? There's no more milk와 We no longer buy milk는 어떻게 다릅니까?
