18분관사는 첫 과들부터 나왔습니다: a와 an(A1 2과), a와 the(A1 14과), 이름 앞의 관사와 go to school(A2 16과).
| the |
| a / an |
I bought a jacket and a scarf. The jacket is blue. Could you close the door?, the kitchen(이 집의), the station(이 도시의). 모두에게 하나뿐인 것: the sun, the sea, the government. 뒤에 오는 말이 그것을 정해 주는 것: the man in the grey coat, the book I'm reading, the history of Wales.
a나 an을 쓸 때. There's a new café in our street. She works in a bank. She's a nurse. It's a lovely day. What a surprise! 그리고 '~에, ~당'이라는 뜻: twice a week, £12 an hour.
|---|---|
| Books are expensive. | The books on my desk are from the library. |
| I like coffee. | The coffee in this café is terrible. |
| Children learn languages fast. | The children next door are very loud. |
| Life is short. | The life of a nurse is hard. |
| Music helps me relax. | The music at the wedding was great. |
반면 뒤에서 꾸미는 말 — of, in이 이끄는 말, 관계사절 — 은 거의 언제나 구체적으로 만듭니다: the art of the Renaissance, the bread you bought. 하지만 life in London, life in a big city는 그곳의 삶 전반을 말하므로 여전히 관사가 붙지 않습니다.
I don't eat meat. |
She speaks German. I play tennis. |
We had lunch at one. |
| by 뒤의 교통수단 | We went by train. |
| 본래 목적으로 가는 곳 (A2 16과) | go to work, school, bed; be in hospital |
Spain, Edinburgh, Oxford Street |
| next, last — 오늘을 기준으로 | next week, last year |
언제나 the와 함께. 최상급과 서수: the best film, the first time. the same, the only. 늘 가는 오락 장소: go to the cinema, go to the theatre, listen to the radio — 하지만 watch TV. 하루의 때: in the morning, in the evening — 하지만 at night. 국민 전체: the British, the Romans.
another, the other, others — 같은 체계.
|---|---|---|---|
| another + 단수 | an + other | 하나 더; 어떤 다른 것 | Can I have another coffee? |
| the other + 단수 | the + other | 둘 가운데 나머지 하나 | One shoe is here. Where's the other one? |
| other + 복수 | 관사 없음 | 다른 것들 일반, 그 밖의 어떤 것들 | Other people think differently. |
| the other + 복수 | the + other | 알려진 무리의 나머지 | Tom is here. The other guests are in the garden. |
| others | 명사 없이 | 다른 사람들, 다른 것들 일반 | Some people like it; others don't. |
| the others | 명사 없이 | 알려진 무리의 나머지 전부 | Two of us came by car, and the others walked. |
another는 an + other이기 때문에 붙여 쓰고, a처럼 '여럿 가운데 하나, 아무것이나'를 뜻합니다. 그래서 other people 또는 그냥 others이고, others people은 아닙니다. 그리고 the another는 없습니다: another 안에 이미 관사가 있습니다. each other — '서로'(A2 24과) — 는 따로 된 표현입니다.
| I've got two sisters. One lives in York, and the other lives in Cardiff. |
| I've got three sisters. One lives in York, and the others live in Cardiff. |
| I've got five sisters. One lives in York, and another lives in Cardiff. |
그리고 기억하십시오: my, your, this, that, Tom's는 관사 자리를 차지하므로 관사와 함께 쓰지 않습니다 — my car이고, the my car가 아닙니다.
✗ What nice surprise! → ✓ What a nice surprise!

✗ I bought car
✗ She is doctor
✓ I bought a car
She's a doctor.
✗ I love dog
✗ Book is expensive
✓ I love dogs
Books are expensive.
✗ The life is short → ✓ Life is short. ✗ The money isn't everything → ✓ Money isn't everything. I like the coffee도 조심하십시오: 틀린 말은 아니지만 '커피를 좋아한다'가 아니라 '(여기) 이 커피가 마음에 든다'라는 뜻입니다.
✗ informations
✗ homeworks
✗ a good news
✓ information
homework, some good news.
✗ another people
✓ other people
철자가 아니라 소리가 정합니다: the university /ðə ˌjuːnɪˈvɜːsəti/ — 이 단어는 /j/ 소리로 시작합니다; the hour /ði ˈaʊə/ — h를 발음하지 않습니다. 마찬가지로 a university, 하지만 an hour(A1 12과).
관사는 다음 단어와 이어서 발음합니다: an apple /ənˈæpl/, the end /ðiˈend/.
another와 others: /əˈnʌðə/ — 강세는 둘째 음절에 있고, 시작은 관사 an처럼 약합니다; /ˈʌðəz/ — /ð/와 /z/ 모두 유성음입니다.
He's the expert on this.
Books are expensive, so I hardly ever buy them. Instead, I go to the library near my office twice a week. It's an old building — it was built in 1910 — and it has two reading rooms. One is for children, and the other is on the first floor. It's the quietest place I know.
The library has a good collection of history books. History was my favourite subject at school, and I still read about the past more than anything else. At the moment I'm reading a book about the Romans in Britain. The book is huge, and I can only keep it for three weeks, so I'm reading it on the train every morning. Next week I'll ask for another three weeks.
The staff are very friendly. There's a librarian called Mr Hughes who always recommends something new. Last month he gave me a novel by a Welsh writer I had never heard of. The novel was strange but beautiful, and I finished it in a weekend.
People say that libraries are dying. I'm not sure that's true. On a Saturday morning the library is full: students, children with their parents, old men reading the newspapers. Some people come to study; others just want a warm, quiet place to sit. Libraries are still the best free places in town.

예시
There's a small park near my flat. I go there every morning before work. The park has a pond and an old bench under a tree. The bench is my favourite place. People often say that parks are boring, but I think nature is the best medicine. In the evening some people come to run, and others just walk their dogs.
