A2 #18 jūs iemācījāties runāt par to, kas ir beidzies: I don't work there any more — „Es tur vairs nestrādāju”. Šim not … any more ir grāmatnieciskais variants, kurā noliegums jau ir iekšā: no longer. Tas uzbūvēts tāpat kā hardly (B1 #12): vārds pats ir noliedzošs, un otru not blakus tam neliek.

I no longer work there. Es tur vairs nestrādāju.
= I don't work there any more. tas pats, sarunvalodā
She's no longer a child. Viņa vairs nav bērns.
The shop is no longer open on Sundays. Veikals svētdienās vairs nestrādā.
You can no longer pay by cheque. Ar čeku vairs nevar samaksāt.
We no longer have a car. Mums vairs nav mašīnas.

Vieta. no longer stāv tur pat, kur biežuma apstākļa vārdi (A1 #11) un hardly: pirms nozīmes darbības vārda (I no longer work), bet pēc be (She's no longer) un pēc palīgdarbības vai modālā darbības vārda (You can no longer pay). any more stāv pašās frāzes beigās.

not … any longer nozīmē to pašu, ko not … any more, un arī stāv beigās: I can't wait any longer. — „Es vairs nevaru gaidīt”. Ar wait un stay šī forma ir īpaši bieža: We couldn't stay any longer.

Kur kas skan. Sarunā gandrīz vienmēr not … any more. no longer — rakstos, paziņojumos, ziņās un oficiālās vēstulēs: This service is no longer available. — „Šis pakalpojums vairs netiek sniegts”. Mutvārdu runā no longer skan stingrāk un uzsver pārmaiņu.

Jautājumā un īsajā atbildē — still un any more: — Do you still live in Bath? — No, not any more. Atbilde No longer vienā vārdā skan grāmatnieciski.

Nejauciet no longer un no more. no longer — par laiku: agrāk bija, tagad nav. no more + lietvārds — par daudzumu: There's no more coffee. — „Kafijas vairs nav, tā ir beigusies”. ✗ I no more work there → ✓ I no longer work there.

Salīdziniet ar still:

He still lives with his parents. joprojām dzīvo
He no longer lives with his parents. vairs nedzīvo

Kā tulkot. Latviešu „vairs ne-”, „jau ne-”, „pārstāja” stāstā par pārmaiņu — tas ir no longer vai not … any more. „Viņš vairs nav tas pats” — He's no longer the same. „Tas vairs nav noslēpums” — It's no longer a secret. „Man to vairs nevajag” — I no longer need it vai I don't need it any more. Noliegumu „ne-” angļu frāzē atsevišķi nepārnesiet: no longer tas jau ir, tāpat kā hardly. Ja „vairs ne-” nozīmē „ne mirkli ilgāk”, „pietiek”, ņemiet not … any longer: „Es to vairs nevaru izturēt” — I can't stand it any longer.

Rakstība. Britu angļu valodā parasti raksta šķirti — any more; kopā rakstītais anymore ienācis no amerikāņu angļu valodas un arī Britānijā sastopams arvien biežāk. Par kļūdu netiek uzskatīts ne viens, ne otrs; šajā kursā — šķirti, kā A2 #18. no longer raksta tikai šķirti.

Tā nesaka. ✗ I don't no longer work there → ✓ I no longer work there. Noliegums no longer jau ir; otrais pārvērš frāzi dubultā noliegumā, kāda standarta angļu valodā nav, — lai gan latviski pie „vairs” noliegums „ne-” darbības vārdam ir obligāts.

Pārbaudiet sevi. Kā grāmatnieciski pateikt She doesn't live here any more? Kas nav kārtībā teikumā I can't wait no longer? Ar ko There's no more milk atšķiras no We no longer buy milk?

She no longer lives here; dubultais noliegums: I can't wait any longer; pirmais — piens ir beidzies, otrais — mēs to vairs nepērkam.

Īss produktīvs uzdevums

Pastāstiet skaļi un pierakstiet desmit teikumus: divi pieklājīgi jautājumi svešiniekam un viens „nezinu”; īsa saruna ar astīti un So … I vai Neither …

  • vai blakus no longer nav otra not?
