A2の第18課で、終わったことを言えるようになりました：I don't work there any more — 「私はもうそこで働いていません」。この not … any more には、否定がはじめから中に入っている書き言葉の形があります： no longer。しくみは hardly（第12課）と同じです：語そのものが否定なので、そばに2つ目の not は置きません。

I no longer work there. 私はもうそこで働いていません。
= I don't work there any more. 同じ意味で、より会話的
She's no longer a child. 彼女はもう子どもではない。
The shop is no longer open on Sundays. その店は、もう日曜日には開いていない。
You can no longer pay by cheque. 小切手ではもう支払えない。
We no longer have a car. 私たちはもう車を持っていない。

位置。 no longer は、頻度の副詞（A1の第11課）や hardly と同じ位置に置きます：一般動詞の前（I no longer work）、ただし be のあと（She's no longer）と、助動詞のあと（You can no longer pay）。any more は文のいちばん最後です。

not … any longer は not … any more と同じ意味で、やはり文の最後に置きます：I can't wait any longer. — 「もうこれ以上待てない」。wait と stay では、とくによく使う形です：We couldn't stay any longer.

どこで使うか。 会話では、ほとんどいつも not … any more です。no longer は書き言葉、掲示、ニュース、改まった手紙で使います：This service is no longer available. — 「このサービスは終了いたしました」。話し言葉では、no longer は堅く聞こえ、変化を強調します。

疑問文と短い答えでは — still と any more：— Do you still live in Bath? — No, not any more. 1語の No longer で答えると、書き言葉のように聞こえます。

no longer と no more を混同しないでください。 no longer は時間について：前はそうだったが、今は違う。no more ＋ 名詞は量について：There's no more coffee. — 「コーヒーはもうない、なくなった」。 ✗ I no more work there → ✓ I no longer work there。

still と比べてみましょう：

He still lives with his parents. まだ住んでいる
He no longer lives with his parents. もう住んでいない

訳すとき。 変化について話す日本語の「もう〜ない」「もはや〜ない」「〜しなくなった」は、no longer か not … any more です。「彼はもう昔の彼ではない」— He's no longer the same。「それはもう秘密ではない」— It's no longer a secret。「それはもう要らない」— I no longer need it か I don't need it any more。日本語の「〜ない」を、別の not として英語の文に入れないでください：no longer の中には、 hardly と同じく、否定がもう入っています。「もう〜ない」が「これ以上は1秒も〜ない、もうたくさん」という意味なら、not … any longer を使います：「もうこれ以上がまんできない」— I can't stand it any longer。

つづり。 イギリス英語では、ふつう any more と2語で書きます；1語の anymore はアメリカ英語から来たもので、イギリスでもだんだんよく見かけるようになっています。どちらも誤りではありません；このコースでは、A2の第18課と同じく2語で書きます。no longer はいつも2語です。

こうは言いません。 ✗ I don't no longer work there → ✓ I no longer work there。no longer にはもう否定が入っています。2つ目の否定を加えると二重否定になり、標準英語にはこの形はありません。

確かめてみましょう。 She doesn't live here any more を書き言葉ではどう言いますか。I can't wait no longer のどこがおかしいですか。There's no more milk と We no longer buy milk はどう違いますか。
