I used to live in a village. 이제 둘을 함께 살펴보고, get used to와 과거에 대한 would도 봅니다.
|---|---|---|---|
| used to + 동사 | 예전에는 그랬지만 지금은 아니다 | 동사원형 | I used to get up at ten. |
| be used to + -ing | 익숙하다, 어렵지 않다 | -ing, 명사, 대명사 | I'm used to getting up early. |
| get used to + -ing | 익숙해지다: 어려웠던 것이 익숙해져 간다 | -ing, 명사, 대명사 | I'm getting used to the early mornings. |
used to — A2 28과 복습. 과거에 대해서만, 그리고 그만둔 일에 대해서만 말합니다: I used to smoke. Did you use to play football? I didn't use to like coffee. there와 함께 쓰면 '예전에 여기에 ~이 있었다'가 됩니다: There used to be a cinema here. 현재에 대해서는 used to를 쓰지 않습니다: 지금 보통 하는 일은 usually로 말합니다 — I usually get up at seven.
be used to — '나에게 익숙하다'.
| I'm used to the noise. | |
| She isn't used to working at night. | |
| Are you used to the cold? | |
| At first we weren't used to driving on the left. | |
왜 be used to 뒤에 -ing가 오는가. 여기의 to는 동사 앞에 붙는 to부정사의 to가 아니라 전치사입니다. interested in(B1 26과)의 in이나 apologise for(B1 16과)의 for와 같습니다. 확인법: 동사 자리에 명사를 넣을 수 있으면 — I'm used to the cold — to는 전치사이고, 동사를 넣으면 I'm used to working이 됩니다.
get used to — '익숙해지다'.
| I'm getting used to it. |
| You'll get used to it. |
| I've got used to the new job. | |
| It took me a year to get used to the climate. | |
| I can't get used to driving on the left. | |
I've got used to it과 I'm used to it은 거의 같습니다: 앞의 것은 낯선 것에서 익숙한 것까지 길을 지나왔다는 것을, 뒤의 것은 지금 상태를 말합니다.
- 앞에 아무것도 없으면(I used to) — 과거이고, 뒤에는 동사원형;
- 앞에 be가 있으면(I'm used to, She was used to) — '익숙하다'이고, 뒤에는 -ing;
- 앞에 get이 있으면(I'm getting used to, You'll get used to) — '익숙해지다'이고, 뒤에는 -ing.
| I used to live alone. | |
| I'm used to living alone. | |
| I'm getting used to living alone. |
Every summer we would go to my grandparents'. My grandfather would take us fishing. 줄여서 'd: We'd swim in the river every day. (When I was a child…, Every summer…)
- 행동에만 쓰고, 상태에는 쓰지 않습니다. be, have, live, like, know 같은 동사와는 used to만 씁니다: I used to have a dog이고, ✗ I would have a dog이 아닙니다. 뒤의 것은 '개가 있을 텐데'라는 뜻으로, 2형 조건문(B1 8과)입니다;
I would go to the cinema는 '영화를 보러 갈 텐데'로 읽힙니다.
| used to | would | |
|---|---|---|
We used to play outside. | ✓ We would play outside. |
I used to live in a village. | ✗ |
We moved in 2019. |
'예전에는 (지금은 아니지만)', '~하곤 했다' — used to나 would. '익숙하다', '~이 편하다' — be used to. '(드디어) 익숙해졌다' — have got used to.

| There used to be a bakery on this corner. | |
| I'm not used to eating so late. | |
| Don't worry — you'll soon get used to the new system. | |
| On Sundays my dad would make pancakes. |
✗ I got used to get up early → ✓ I got used to getting up early. be used to와 마찬가지로 get used to 뒤에도 -ing입니다.
I used to ___ (drive), I'm used to ___ (drive). When I was a child, I would have a cat이라고 말할 수 있습니까?

사용자 언어로 작성됨be used to + 동사원형
✗ I'm used to get up early
✓ I'm used to getting up early
'to 뒤에는 동사원형'이라는 to부정사의 습관이 워낙 강해서, be used to -ing를 외워 두고도 말할 때는 원형이 나옵니다.
be가 빠짐
✗ I used to the noise
✗ I used to getting up early
✓ I'm used to the noise
I'm used to getting up early.
✗ I use to drink coffee in the morning
✓ I usually drink coffee in the morning
used to를 '~하곤 했다'로 외워서, '아침에 커피를 마시곤 한다'에는 use to를 씁니다.
did 뒤의 used
✗ Did you used to play football?
✓ Did you use to play football?
used to를 한 덩어리로 외워서 did 뒤에서도 -d를 남깁니다.
4분used to와 be used to는 똑같이 /ˈjuːstə/로 소리 납니다: 무성음 /s/, /d/ 없이, to는 약한 /tə/.
| I used to work there. | /aɪ ˈjuːstə ˈwɜːk/ —
| I'm used to working there. | /aɪm ˈjuːstə ˈwɜːkɪŋ/ — used 앞에 'm, 뒤에 -ing |
I used a knife /aɪ juːzd ə ˈnaɪf/. used to에서는 무성음 /s/와 /t/입니다: /juːst/.
이야기 속의 would는 거의 들리지 않습니다: we'd go /wiːd ˈɡəʊ/, he'd take /hiːd ˈteɪk/ — would에서 남는 것은 짧은 /d/뿐입니다.
I grew up on a farm in Wales. When I was a child, I used to get up at six to help my dad with the animals. In winter it was still dark, and my brother and I would walk to the school bus with torches. We didn't use to have the internet at home, so in the evenings we'd read or play cards.
A few years ago I moved to London for work, and it was a shock. I wasn't used to the noise, the crowds or the prices. For the first few months I couldn't sleep because of the traffic outside my window. But you get used to everything. Now I'm used to the noise — I hardly hear it any more. I'm used to taking the Tube, and I've even got used to paying four pounds for a coffee.
The one thing I'm still getting used to is my tiny flat. I used to have a whole house and a garden; now I have one room and a window box with three plants in it. My mum says I'll get used to it. Maybe. But every time I go home, I spend the whole weekend outside.
