La A2 #28 ai învățat used to — „înainte era așa, acum nu mai e”: I used to live in a village. Tot acolo era un avertisment: există o construcție asemănătoare, be used to, care înseamnă cu totul altceva. Acum le luăm pe amândouă, iar pe lângă ele — get used to și would despre trecut.

Trei construcții cu cuvântul used:

construcția ce înseamnă ce urmează exemplu
used to + verb înainte era, acum nu forma de bază I used to get up at ten.
be used to + -ing e obișnuit, nu e greu -ing, substantiv, pronume I'm used to getting up early.
get used to + -ing a se obișnui: era greu, devine obișnuit -ing, substantiv, pronume I'm getting used to the early mornings.

used to — recapitulare din A2 #28. Vorbește doar despre trecut și doar despre ce s-a oprit: I used to smoke. — „Fumam înainte”. Întrebarea și negația — cu did, iar atunci -d dispare: Did you use to play football? I didn't use to like coffee. Cu there iese „înainte aici era”: There used to be a cinema here. Despre prezent used to nu există: despre ce faci de obicei acum se spune usually — I usually get up at seven.

be used to — „sunt obișnuit cu asta”. E o stare: te-ai obișnuit deja, și nu-ți mai e nici greu, nici ciudat. be se schimbă după persoană și timp, iar used to rămâne cum e:

I'm used to the noise. Sunt obișnuit cu zgomotul.
She isn't used to working at night. Nu e obișnuită să lucreze noaptea.
Are you used to the cold? Te-ai obișnuit cu frigul?
At first we weren't used to driving on the left.

De ce după be used to stă -ing. Aici to nu e particula dinaintea verbului, ci o prepoziție, ca in din interested in (B1 #26) sau for din apologise for (B1 #16). Verificarea: dacă în locul verbului poți pune un substantiv — I'm used to the cold —, atunci to e prepoziție, iar verbul de după el va fi I'm used to working.

get used to — „a se obișnui”.

I'm getting used to it. Mă obișnuiesc.
You'll get used to it. O să te obișnuiești.
I've got used to the new job. M-am obișnuit cu noul serviciu (deja).
It took me a year to get used to the climate.
I can't get used to driving on the left.

I've got used to it și I'm used to it aproape coincid: prima spune că ai trecut drumul de la neobișnuit la obișnuit, a doua — cum stau lucrurile acum.

Cum le deosebești într-o secundă. Uită-te la cuvântul dinaintea lui used:

  • înaintea lui nu e nimic (I used to) — e trecutul, urmează forma de bază;
  • înaintea lui e be (I'm used to, She was used to) — „e obișnuit”, urmează -ing;
  • înaintea lui e get (I'm getting used to, You'll get used to) — „a se obișnui”, urmează -ing.

Compară:

I used to live alone. Înainte locuiam singur (acum nu).
I'm used to living alone.
I'm getting used to living alone. Mă obișnuiesc să locuiesc singur.

would despre trecutul care se repeta. Într-o povestire despre trecut, în locul lui used to poți spune would + verb — despre acțiuni care se repetau: Every summer we would go to my grandparents'. My grandfather would take us fishing. — „În fiecare vară mergeam la bunici. Bunicul ne lua la pescuit”. Prescurtat — 'd: We'd swim in the river every day. De obicei povestirea începe cu used to sau cu un cuvânt de timp (When I was a child…, Every summer…), iar mai departe continuă cu would: așa sună o amintire.

would are două limite:

  • doar acțiuni, nu stări. Cu verbele be, have, live, like, know — doar used to: I used to have a dog, dar nu ✗ I would have a dog. Aceasta din urmă înseamnă „aș avea un câine” — e tipul al doilea de condiționale (B1 #8);
  • e nevoie de un context trecut. Fără el I would go to the cinema se citește „aș merge la cinema”.
used to would
acțiuni repetate ✓ We used to play outside. ✓ We would play outside.
stări ✓ I used to live in a village. ✗
un singur eveniment ✗ ✗ — trebuie Past Simple: We moved in 2019.

Indicii din română. „Înainte (acum nu)”, „obișnuiam să”, imperfectul de obicei („mergeam în fiecare vară”) — used to sau would. „Sunt obișnuit (cu, să)”, „mi-e obișnuit” — be used to. „M-am obișnuit” în sensul „în sfârșit m-am obișnuit” — have got used to. „Mă obișnuiesc”, „o să mă obișnuiesc”, „nu mă pot obișnui” — get used to.

Încă exemple:

We used to go camping every summer. Înainte mergeam în fiecare vară cu cortul.
There used to be a bakery on this corner. Înainte pe colțul ăsta era o brutărie.
I'm not used to eating so late.
Don't worry — you'll soon get used to the new system.
On Sundays my dad would make pancakes. Duminica tata făcea clătite.

Așa nu se spune. ✗ I got used to get up early → ✓ I got used to getting up early. După get used to, ca și după be used to, — -ing.

Verifică-te. Completează forma: I used to ___ (drive) și I'm used to ___ (drive). Cum spui „O să te obișnuiești”? Se poate spune When I was a child, I would have a cat?

arată răspunsurile
drive, driving; You'll get used to it; nu: have e aici o stare, trebuie I used to have a cat.

Greșelile vorbitorilor de limba română

adaptat pentru limba ta
1

„Obișnuit să” + verb

„Sunt obișnuit să mă trezesc devreme” → ✗ I'm used to get up early → ✓ I'm used to getting up early. „Să” + verb trece în engleză ca to + forma de bază, ca la want to. Dar aici to e prepoziție, iar după el vine -ing. La fel: ✗ She can't get used to live alone → ✓ She can't get used to living alone.

2

„Obișnuit cu” → with

„M-am obișnuit cu zgomotul” → ✗ I'm used with the noise → ✓ I'm used to the noise. Prepoziția românească trece în engleză; după used stă mereu to.

3

„Obișnuiesc să” la prezent

„Obișnuiesc să beau ceai dimineața” → ✗ I use to drink tea in the morning → ✓ I usually drink tea in the morning. Ca în A2 #28: „a obișnui” are prezent, used to — nu; despre ce faci acum se spune usually.

4

would pentru o stare

„Când eram mic, aveam părul lung” → ✗ When I was young, I would have long hair → ✓ I used to have long hair.

4 min

used to și be used to sună la fel — /ˈjuːstə/: /s/ surd, fără /d/, to — slab, /tə/.

I used to work there. /aɪ ˈjuːstə wɜːk/ — urmează forma de bază
I'm used to working there. /aɪm ˈjuːstə ˈwɜːkɪŋ/ — înaintea lui used e 'm, după — -ing

used cu alte sensuri sună altfel.

would într-o povestire aproape că nu se aude: we'd go /wiːd ˈɡəʊ/, he'd take /hiːd ˈteɪk/ — din would rămâne un /d/ scurt. Accentul — pe verbul cu sens.

Text

5 min

I grew up on a farm in Wales. When I was a child, I used to get up at six to help my dad with the animals. In winter it was still dark, and my brother and I would walk to the school bus with torches. We didn't use to have the internet at home, so in the evenings we'd read or play cards.

A few years ago I moved to London for work, and it was a shock. I wasn't used to the noise, the crowds or the prices. For the first few months I couldn't sleep because of the traffic outside my window. But you get used to everything. Now I'm used to the noise — I hardly hear it any more. I'm used to taking the Tube, and I've even got used to paying four pounds for a coffee.

The one thing I'm still getting used to is my tiny flat. I used to have a whole house and a garden; now I have one room and a window box with three plants in it. My mum says I'll get used to it. Maybe. But every time I go home, I spend the whole weekend outside.
