A l'A2 #28 vas aprendre used to, «abans era així, i ara ja no»: I used to live in a village. Allà mateix hi havia un avís: hi ha una construcció semblant, be used to, i vol dir una cosa molt diferent. Ara veurem totes dues i, amb elles, get used to i would per parlar del passat.

used to + verb abans era així, ara ja no la forma base I used to get up at ten.
be used to + -ing és habitual, no costa -ing, un nom, un pronom I'm used to getting up early.
get used to + -ing acostumar-se: costava, es torna habitual -ing, un nom, un pronom I'm getting used to the early mornings.

used to: repàs de l'A2 #28. Parla només del passat i només del que s'ha acabat: I used to smoke. — «Abans fumava». La pregunta i la negació van amb did, i llavors la -d desapareix: Did you use to play football? I didn't use to like coffee. Amb there surt «abans aquí hi havia»: There used to be a cinema here. Per al present used to no existeix: del que fas normalment ara se'n parla amb usually — I usually get up at seven.

be used to: «estic acostumat». És un estat: ja t'hi has acostumat, i no et costa ni et sembla estrany. be canvia segons la persona i el temps, i used to es queda igual:

I'm used to the noise. Estic acostumat al soroll.
She isn't used to working at night. No està acostumada a treballar de nit.
Are you used to the cold? Estàs acostumat al fred?
At first we weren't used to driving on the left. Al principi no estàvem acostumats a conduir per l'esquerra.

Per què darrere de be used to va -ing.

get used to: «acostumar-se».

I'm getting used to it. M'hi estic acostumant.
You'll get used to it. Ja t'hi acostumaràs.
I've got used to the new job. M'he acostumat a la nova feina (ja).
It took me a year to get used to the climate. Vaig trigar un any a acostumar-me al clima.
I can't get used to driving on the left.

  • davant no hi ha res (I used to): és el passat, i darrere va la forma base;
  • davant hi ha be (I'm used to, She was used to): «és habitual», i darrere va -ing;
  • davant hi ha get (I'm getting used to, You'll get used to): «acostumar-se», i darrere va -ing.

Compara:

I used to live alone. Abans vivia sol (ara ja no).
I'm used to living alone.
I'm getting used to living alone. M'estic acostumant a viure sol.

would per al passat que es repetia. En un relat sobre el passat, en lloc de used to es pot dir would + verb, per a accions que es repetien: Every summer we would go to my grandparents'. My grandfather would take us fishing. — «Cada estiu anàvem a casa dels avis. L'avi ens portava a pescar». En forma breu, 'd: We'd swim in the river every day. El relat normalment s'obre amb used to o amb una expressió de temps (When I was a child…, Every summer…), i després es continua amb would: així sona un record.

would té dues limitacions:

  • només accions, no estats. Amb els verbs be, have, live, like, know, només used to: I used to have a dog, però no ✗ I would have a dog. Això últim vol dir «tindria un gos»: és el segon tipus de condicionals (B1 #8);
  • cal un context de passat. Sense context, I would go to the cinema s'entendrà com «aniria al cinema».
used to would
accions repetides ✓ We used to play outside. ✓ We would play outside.
estats ✓ I used to live in a village. ✗
un sol fet ✗ ✗ — cal el Past Simple: We moved in 2019.

«Abans (i ara ja no)», «solia» o l'imperfet d'hàbit («cada estiu anàvem»): used to o would. «Estic acostumat», «per a mi és normal»: be used to. «M'hi he acostumat», en el sentit de «per fi»: have got used to. «M'hi estic acostumant», «t'hi acostumaràs», «no m'hi acabo d'acostumar»: get used to. Compte amb «acostumava a» + infinitiu: vol dir «solia», i és used to.

Més exemples:

We used to go camping every summer. Abans anàvem d'acampada cada estiu.
There used to be a bakery on this corner.
I'm not used to eating so late. No estic acostumat a sopar tan tard.
Don't worry — you'll soon get used to the new system. No pateixis: aviat t'acostumaràs al sistema nou.
On Sundays my dad would make pancakes. Els diumenges el meu pare feia creps.

Així no es diu. ✗ I got used to get up early → ✓ I got used to getting up early. Darrere de get used to, igual que darrere de be used to, va -ing.

Posa't a prova. Posa la forma: I used to ___ (drive) i I'm used to ___ (drive). Com es diu «Ja t'hi acostumaràs»? Es pot dir When I was a child, I would have a cat?

mostra les respostes
drive, driving; You'll get used to it; no: have aquí és un estat, cal I used to have a cat.

Errors dels parlants de català

adaptada al teu idioma
1

use to per al present

«Solc beure cafè al matí», «acostumo a beure cafè» → ✗ I use to drink coffee in the morning → ✓ I usually drink coffee in the morning. «Soler» i «acostumar a» serveixen per al present; used to, només per al passat. Ho vas veure a l'A2 #28, i continua sent l'error més freqüent.

2

«Acostumat a» + infinitiu

✗ I'm used to get up early

✓ I'm used to getting up early

3

«Acostumava a» traduït per was used to

«Abans acostumava a llevar-me a les deu» → ✗ I was used to get up at ten → ✓ I used to get up at ten. «Acostumava a» vol dir «solia», i això és used to; was used to vol dir «estava acostumat».

4

would per a un estat

«De jove tenia els cabells llargs» → ✗ When I was young, I would have long hair → ✓ I used to have long hair. L'imperfet català serveix per a accions i per a estats («anàvem», «tenia»); would, només per a accions.

Pronunciació

4 min

used to i be used to sonen igual, /ˈjuːstə/: /s/ sorda, sense /d/, i to, feble, /tə/.

I used to work there. /aɪ ˈjuːstə wɜːk/ — darrere, la forma base
I'm used to working there. /aɪm ˈjuːstə ˈwɜːkɪŋ/ — davant d'used, 'm; darrere, -ing

used amb altres sentits sona diferent. El verb use — «fer servir» — en passat es pronuncia amb /z/ sonora i amb /d/: I used a knife /aɪ juːzd ə ˈnaɪf/. En canvi, a used to hi ha /s/ sorda i /t/: /juːst/.

would en un relat gairebé no se sent: we'd go /wiːd ˈɡəʊ/, he'd take /hiːd ˈteɪk/ — de would només en queda una /d/ curta.

Text

I grew up on a farm in Wales. When I was a child, I used to get up at six to help my dad with the animals. In winter it was still dark, and my brother and I would walk to the school bus with torches. We didn't use to have the internet at home, so in the evenings we'd read or play cards.

A few years ago I moved to London for work, and it was a shock. I wasn't used to the noise, the crowds or the prices. For the first few months I couldn't sleep because of the traffic outside my window. But you get used to everything. Now I'm used to the noise — I hardly hear it any more. I'm used to taking the Tube, and I've even got used to paying four pounds for a coffee.

The one thing I'm still getting used to is my tiny flat. I used to have a whole house and a garden; now I have one room and a window box with three plants in it. My mum says I'll get used to it. Maybe. But every time I go home, I spend the whole weekend outside.
