אני יכול/ה להבחין בין "פעם הייתי עושה", "אני רגיל/ה" ו"אני מתרגל/ת" — שלושה מבנים שבאנגלית נשמעים כמעט אותו דבר.

דקדוק

ב־A2 #28 למדתם את used to — "פעם היה, והיום כבר לא": I used to live in a village. שם גם הייתה אזהרה: יש מבנה דומה, be used to, ופירושו שונה לגמרי. עכשיו נפרק את שניהם, ואיתם את get used to ואת would על העבר.

שלושה מבנים עם המילה used:

be used to + -ing רגיל, לא קשה -ing, שם עצם, כינוי גוף I'm used to getting up early.
get used to + -ing להתרגל: היה קשה, נעשה רגיל -ing, שם עצם, כינוי גוף I'm getting used to the early mornings.

used to — חזרה מ־A2 #28. מדבר רק על העבר ורק על מה שנפסק: I used to smoke. — "פעם עישנתי". שאלה ושלילה — עם did, ואז ה־-d נעלם: Did you use to play football? I didn't use to like coffee. עם there יוצא "פעם היה כאן": There used to be a cinema here. על ההווה used to לא קיים: על מה שאתם עושים בדרך כלל היום אומרים usually — I usually get up at seven.

be used to — "אני רגיל/ה לזה". זה מצב: כבר התרגלתם, וזה לא קשה לכם ולא מוזר. בדיוק כמו "רגיל" בעברית: be משתנה לפי גוף וזמן ("אני רגיל", "היא לא רגילה", "היינו רגילים"), ו־used to נשאר כמו שהוא:

I'm used to the noise. אני רגיל/ה לרעש.
She isn't used to working at night. היא לא רגילה לעבוד בלילות.
Are you used to the cold? אתם רגילים לקור?
At first we weren't used to driving on the left. בהתחלה לא היינו רגילים לנהוג בצד שמאל.

למה אחרי be used to בא -ing. כאן to הוא לא החלק של צורת המקור לפני פועל, אלא מילת יחס, כמו in ב־interested in (B1 #26) או for ב־apologise for (B1 #16). ואחרי מילת יחס הפועל בא בצורת -ing. הבדיקה: אם במקום הפועל אפשר לשים שם עצם — I'm used to the cold, — סימן ש־to מילת יחס, והפועל אחריו יהיה I'm used to working.

get used to — "להתרגל". זה תהליך: היה לא רגיל, נעשה רגיל. get משתנה לפי הזמנים, כמו כל פועל:

I'm getting used to it. אני מתרגל/ת.
You'll get used to it. תתרגל/י.
I've got used to the new job. התרגלתי לעבודה החדשה (כבר).
It took me a year to get used to the climate. לקח לי שנה להתרגל לאקלים.
I can't get used to driving on the left. אני פשוט לא מצליח/ה להתרגל לנהוג בצד שמאל.

I've got used to it ו־I'm used to it כמעט זהים, כמו "התרגלתי" ו"אני רגיל/ה": הראשון אומר שעברתם את הדרך מלא רגיל לרגיל, השני — מה המצב עכשיו.

איך מבחינים בשנייה. הסתכלו על המילה שלפני used:

  • לפניה אין כלום (I used to) — זה עבר, ואחריו צורת הבסיס;
  • לפניה be (I'm used to, She was used to) — "רגיל", ואחריו -ing;
  • לפניה get (I'm getting used to, You'll get used to) — "מתרגל", ואחריו -ing.

השוו:

I used to live alone. פעם גרתי לבד (היום כבר לא).
I'm used to living alone. אני רגיל/ה לגור לבד, לי זה בסדר.
I'm getting used to living alone. אני מתרגל/ת לגור לבד.

would על עבר שחזר על עצמו. בסיפור על העבר אפשר לומר במקום used to גם would + פועל — על פעולות שחזרו על עצמן: Every summer we would go to my grandparents'. My grandfather would take us fishing. — "כל קיץ היינו נוסעים לסבא ולסבתא. סבא היה לוקח אותנו לדוג". זה בדיוק "הייתי + בינוני" של העברית: "היינו נוסעים", "היה לוקח". בקיצור — 'd: We'd swim in the river every day. בדרך כלל פותחים את הסיפור ב־used to או במילת זמן (When I was a child…, Every summer…), וממשיכים ב־would: כך נשמע זיכרון.

ל־would יש שתי מגבלות:

  • רק פעולות, לא מצבים. עם הפעלים be, have, live, like, know — רק used to: I used to have a dog, אבל לא ✗ I would have a dog. המשפט האחרון פירושו "אילו…, היה לי כלב" — זה הסוג השני של משפטי התנאי (B1 #8);
  • צריך הקשר של עבר. בלעדיו I would go to the cinema יובן כ"הייתי הולך לקולנוע (אילו…)", כמו בעברית.
used to would

רמזים בעברית. "פעם (והיום כבר לא)", "נהגתי ל־", "הייתי + בינוני" ("הייתי הולך") — used to או would. "אני רגיל/ה", "זה רגיל לי" — be used to. "התרגלתי" במובן "סוף סוף התרגלתי" — have got used to. "אני מתרגל/ת", "אתרגל", "לא מצליח/ה להתרגל" — get used to.

We used to go camping every summer. פעם היינו יוצאים לקמפינג כל קיץ.
There used to be a bakery on this corner. פעם הייתה בפינה הזאת מאפייה.
I'm not used to eating so late. אני לא רגיל/ה לאכול כל כך מאוחר.

On Sundays my dad would make pancakes. בימי ראשון אבא היה מכין פנקייקים.

כך לא אומרים. ✗ I got used to get up early → ✓ I got used to getting up early. אחרי get used to, כמו אחרי be used to, — -ing.

בעברית "הייתי רגיל לשחק" אומר לעתים קרובות פשוט "פעם נהגתי לשחק", ומתורגם מילה במילה ל־was used to. אבל was used to פירושו "זה כבר לא היה לי קשה", ואחריו -ing. על הרגל שנגמר — used to בלי be.

"אני רגיל/ה לשתות קפה בבוקר" — הרגל של היום, ו"רגיל" מזכיר את used (A2 #28). צורה כזאת באנגלית אין: על מה שקורה היום אומרים usually. I'm used to drinking coffee in the morning נכון, אבל פירושו "זה כבר לא מוזר לי".

"היינו גרים בכפר" — בעברית "הייתי + בינוני" מתאים גם לפעולות ("הייתי הולך") וגם למצבים ("הייתי גר"), ובאנגלית would — רק לפעולות (A2 #28).

I'm used to working there. /aɪm ˈjuːstə ˈwɜːkɪŋ/ — לפני used יש 'm, אחריו -ing

used במשמעויות אחרות נשמע אחרת. הפועל use — "להשתמש" — בזמן עבר נהגה עם /z/ קולי ועם /d/: I used a knife /aɪ juːzd ə ˈnaɪf/. וב־used to — /s/ אטום ו־/t/: /juːst/. אם אומרים "יוּזְד טוּ", כמו שזה כתוב, יוצא "השתמשתי כדי".

את would בסיפור כמעט לא שומעים: we'd go /wiːd ˈɡəʊ/, he'd take /hiːd ˈteɪk/ — מ־would נשאר /d/ קצר. ההטעמה — על הפועל העיקרי.

I grew up on a farm in Wales. When I was a child, I used to get up at six to help my dad with the animals. In winter it was still dark, and my brother and I would walk to the school bus with torches. We didn't use to have the internet at home, so in the evenings we'd read or play cards.

A few years ago I moved to London for work, and it was a shock. I wasn't used to the noise, the crowds or the prices. For the first few months I couldn't sleep because of the traffic outside my window. But you get used to everything. Now I'm used to the noise — I hardly hear it any more. I'm used to taking the Tube, and I've even got used to paying four pounds for a coffee.

The one thing I'm still getting used to is my tiny flat. I used to have a whole house and a garden; now I have one room and a window box with three plants in it. My mum says I'll get used to it. Maybe. But every time I go home, I spend the whole weekend outside.
