Artikuli jums ir bijuši kopš pirmajām nodarbībām: a un an (A1 #2), a un the (A1 #14), artikuls ar nosaukumiem un go to school (A2 #16). Katru reizi — pa gabaliņam. Šeit tie saliekas sistēmā, kas atrisina gandrīz jebkuru gadījumu.

Latviešu valodā artikulu nav — noteiktību reizēm parāda tikai īpašības vārda galotne (jauna mašīna — jaunā mašīna), — tāpēc šķiet, ka artikuli vajadzīgi skaistumam. Tā nav: a car un the car ir divi dažādi vēstījumi. Pirmais — „kaut kāda mašīna, par to jūs vēl neesat dzirdējis”, otrais — „tā pati, jūs zināt, kura”.

Trīs jautājumi — pēc kārtas.

jautājums ja „jā”
Vai klausītājs saprot, kurš tieši priekšmets? the
Nē. Vai tas ir viens skaitāms priekšmets — „kaut kāds”, „viens no”? a / an

Priekšmets jau minēts: I bought a jacket and a scarf. The jacket is blue. Tas ir vienīgais šajā situācijā: Could you close the door?, the kitchen (šajā dzīvoklī), the station (šajā pilsētā). Tas ir viens visiem: the sun, the sea, the government. To precizē vārdi aiz tā: the man in the grey coat, the book I'm reading, the history of Wales.

Kad a vai an. Priekšmetu nosauc pirmoreiz: There's a new café in our street. Tas ir viens no daudziem: She works in a bank. Tā ir profesija vai apraksts: She's a nurse. It's a lovely day. What a surprise! Un nozīmē „katrā, par katru”: twice a week, £12 an hour.

vispārīgais — bez artikula konkrētais — ar the
Books are expensive. The books on my desk are from the library.
I like coffee. The coffee in this café is terrible.
Children learn languages fast. The children next door are very loud.
Life is short. The life of a nurse is hard.
Music helps me relax. The music at the wedding was great.

Īpašības vārds priekšmetu nepadara konkrētu: modern art, British history, fresh bread — joprojām vispārīgi, bez artikula. Bet precizējums aiz vārda — ar of, ar in, palīgteikums — gandrīz vienmēr padara: the art of the Renaissance, the bread you bought. Taču life in London, life in a big city nozīmē dzīvi tur vispār, tāpēc joprojām bez artikula.

Bez artikula pēc ieraduma.

ēdiens, dzērieni, vielas vispār I don't eat meat.
valodas, mācību priekšmeti, sporta veidi She speaks German. I play tennis.
ēdienreizes We had lunch at one.
transports pēc by We went by train.
vietas pēc nozīmes (A2 #16) go to work, school, bed; be in hospital
valstis, pilsētas, ielas Spain, Edinburgh, Oxford Street
next, last — skaitot no šodienas next week, last year

Vienmēr ar the. Pārākā pakāpe un kārtas skaitļa vārdi: the best film, the first time. Vārdi the same, the only. Mūzikas instrumenti: play the piano — bet sporta veidi bez artikula: play football. Ierastas izklaides vietas: go to the cinema, go to the theatre, listen to the radio — bet watch TV. Diennakts daļas: in the morning, in the evening — bet at night. Tauta kopumā: the British, the Romans.

another, the other, others — tā pati sistēma.

another + vienskaitlis an + other vēl viens; kaut kāds cits Can I have another coffee?
the other + vienskaitlis the + other otrs no diviem, atlikušais One shoe is here. Where's the other one?
other + daudzskaitlis bez artikula citi vispār, kaut kādi vēl Other people think differently.
the other + daudzskaitlis the + other pārējie no zināmas grupas Tom is here. The other guests are in the garden.
others bez lietvārda citi vispār Some people like it; others don't.
the others bez lietvārda visi pārējie no zināmajiem Two of us came by car, and the others walked.

another ir an + other, tāpēc to raksta kopā, un, tāpat kā a, tas nozīmē „viens no daudziem, jebkurš”. Ar daudzskaitli tas nestāv; izņēmums — ar skaitli: another two days — „vēl divas dienas”. the other darbojas kā the: klausītājs zina, kurš tieši, jo palicis tikai tas (vai tikai tie). other bez artikula pirms daudzskaitļa — kā vispārīgs jēdziens bez artikula: „citi vispār”, kuri tieši — nav svarīgi. others un the others nozīmē to pašu, bet stāv lietvārda vietā: galotni -s saņem tikai vārds, kas stāv viens. Tāpēc other people vai vienkārši others, bet ne others people. Un the another nemēdz būt: artikuls another jau ir iekšā. each other — „viens otru” (A2 #24) — ir atsevišķs savienojums.

Salīdziniet:

I've got two sisters. One lives in York, and the other lives in Cardiff. māsas ir divas — otrā ir zināma
I've got three sisters. One lives in York, and the others live in Cardiff. pārējās — visas, kas palikušas
I've got five sisters. One lives in York, and another lives in Cardiff. vēl viena no vairākām

Kā tulkot. Latviešu vārdi bieži norāda uz artikulu. „Šis”, „tieši tas”, „tas, par ko runājām” — tas ir the. „Viens”, „kaut kāds”, „kāds”, „viens no” — tas ir a. Mājienu dažreiz dod arī īpašības vārda galotne: „nopirku jaunu mašīnu” — a new car, „jaunā mašīna stāv pagalmā” — the new car. Un atcerieties: my, your, this, that, Tom's aizņem artikula vietu, tāpēc kopā ar to nestāv — my car, nevis the my car.

Tā nesaka. ✗ What nice surprise! → ✓ What a nice surprise! Pēc What ar skaitāmu vārdu vienskaitlī vajag a.

I love dogs — suņi vispār, bez artikula; The dogs in our street bark all night — konkrēti suņi; nevajag: īpašības vārds priekšmetu nepadara konkrētu; I've got two cars: one is blue, and the other is red — mašīnas ir divas, un otrā ir vienīgā atlikusī, tāpēc the other.

Latviešu valodas runātāju kļūdas

pielāgots tavai valodai
1

Artikula nav vispār

✗ I bought car

✗ She is doctor

✓ I bought a car

She's a doctor. Latviski „nopirku mašīnu”, „viņa ir ārste” iztiek bez nekā, un artikuls šķiet lieks rotājums, ko ātrā runā var izlaist. Bet skaitāmam vārdam vienskaitlī artikuls (vai my, this) ir vienmēr.

2

the pirms vispārīga jēdziena

✗ The life is short → ✓ Life is short. ✗ The money isn't everything → ✓ Money isn't everything. Tā ir pretējā kļūda: tā rodas, tiklīdz the ir iegaumēts, un to sāk likt pirms katra svarīga vārda. Uzmanīgi arī ar I like the coffee: frāze ir pareiza, bet nozīmē „man garšo šī kafija — šeit”, nevis „man garšo kafija”.

3

a ar neskaitāmu vārdu

✗ a good news, ✗ an advice, ✗ a work nozīmē „darba vieta” → ✓ some good news, some advice, a job. Latviski „ziņa”, „padoms”, „darbs” ir skaitāmi: „laba ziņa”, „divi padomi”, „divi darbi”. Angliski news, advice, work ir neskaitāmi, tāpat kā information: ✗ an information → ✓ some information.

4

Artikuls tur, kur ierasts bez tā

✗ I go to the bed at eleven → ✓ I go to bed at eleven. ✗ We had a lunch at one → ✓ We had lunch at one.

5

another ar daudzskaitli un others pirms lietvārda

✗ another people

✗ others people

✓ other people

Izruna

4 min

Abi artikuli ir neuzsvērti un gandrīz nedzirdami: a /ə/ — nekad ne /eɪ/; an /ən/.

the pirms līdzskaņa skaņas — /ðə/, pirms patskaņa skaņas — /ði/. Izšķir skaņa, nevis burts: the university /ðə ˌjuːnɪˈvɜːsəti/ — vārds sākas ar skaņu /j/; the hour /ði ˈaʊə/ — h neskan. Tāpat a university, bet an hour (A1 #12).

Artikuls saplūst ar nākamo vārdu: an apple /ənˈæpl/, the end /ðiˈend/.

another un others: /əˈnʌðə/ — uzsvars uz otrās zilbes, sākums vājš, kā artikulam an; /ˈʌðəz/ — skanīgie /ð/ un /z/.

Uzsvērtais the /ðiː/ — tikai izceļot: He's the expert on this. — „Viņš ir tieši tas — galvenais speciālists”. Visos citos gadījumos the ir vājš.

Books are expensive, so I hardly ever buy them. Instead, I go to the library near my office twice a week. It's an old building — it was built in 1910 — and it has two reading rooms. One is for children, and the other is on the first floor. It's the quietest place I know.

The library has a good collection of history books. History was my favourite subject at school, and I still read about the past more than anything else. At the moment I'm reading a book about the Romans in Britain. The book is huge, and I can only keep it for three weeks, so I'm reading it on the train every morning. Next week I'll ask for another three weeks.

The staff are very friendly. There's a librarian called Mr Hughes who always recommends something new. Last month he gave me a novel by a Welsh writer I had never heard of. The novel was strange but beautiful, and I finished it in a weekend.

People say that libraries are dying. I'm not sure that's true. On a Saturday morning the library is full: students, children with their parents, old men reading the newspapers. Some people come to study; others just want a warm, quiet place to sit. Libraries are still the best free places in town.

Seši teikumi par vietu, kur jūs bieži ejat: bibliotēka, kafejnīca, parks, sporta zāle. Vajadzīgi visu triju veidu artikuli, vismaz viens vispārīgs apgalvojums bez artikula un viens another, the other vai others.

Paraugs

There's a small park near my flat. I go there every morning before work. The park has a pond and an old bench under a tree. The bench is my favourite place. People often say that parks are boring, but I think nature is the best medicine. In the evening some people come to run, and others just walk their dogs.
