Oppitunnilla A2 #27 ehto oli todellinen: If it rains, I'll stay at home — sade on hyvin mahdollinen.

Muoto: if + mennyt aika, pääosassa would + perusmuoto.

myönteinen If I had more time, I'd learn Italian.
kielteinen If I didn't have to work, I wouldn't get up at six.
kysymys What would you do if you won the lottery?
lyhyt vastaus Yes, I would. / No, I wouldn't.

'd on lyhenne sanasta would, sama kuin I'd like -ilmauksessa (A2 #17). Osat voi vaihtaa: I'd learn Italian if I had more time. If I had a car, I could drive to work.

Mennyt aika ei tässä tarkoita mennyttä. If I had more time puhuu tästä päivästä. Menneen ajan muoto siirtää tapahtuman kauemmas todellisuudesta — samoin kuin kohtelias Could you…? (A2 #17).

Siitä, mitä nyt ei ole: If I lived by the sea, I'd swim every day. En asu meren rannalla.

Tulevasta, joka on epätodennäköistä tai kuviteltua: What would you do if you won a million pounds? Voittaminen on lähes mahdotonta, siksi — toinen tyyppi.

Neuvoon: If I were you, I'd…

If I get the job, I'll move to Bristol. Mahdollisuus on todellinen: haastattelu meni hyvin.
If I got the job, I'd move to Bristol. Mahdollisuus on pieni: tuskin uskallan toivoa.

were kaikissa persoonissa. if-sanan jälkeen be-verbillä on erityinen muoto — were myös persoonien I, he, she kanssa: If I were rich…, If she were here… Puheessa sanotaan usein myös If I was rich — sekin on oikein, vain yksinkertaisempaa ja vähemmän kirjakielistä.

Neuvo: If I were you, I'd… — ”sinuna minä…”. Tässä natiivit sanovat lähes aina were: If I were you, I'd talk to your manager. I wouldn't buy that car if I were you. Tällainen neuvo on pehmeämpi kuin You should… (A2 #11): et opeta toista, vaan asetut hänen asemaansa. Usein alkuosa jätetään pois: I'd talk to your manager — ”sinuna” ymmärretään muutenkin.

would ilman if-sanaa. It would be nice to have a garden. — ”Olisipa mukava, jos olisi puutarha.” I'd never do that. — ”En ikinä tekisi niin.” Which city would you like to live in?

If I knew her number, I'd call her. Jos tietäisin hänen numeronsa, soittaisin hänelle.
If it wasn't so expensive, we'd go more often.
I'd be happier if I didn't live so far from work. Olisin onnellisempi, jos asuisin lähempänä työpaikkaa.
Would you live abroad if you could? Asuisitko ulkomailla, jos voisit?

Näin ei sanota. ✗ If I had more time, I will learn Italian → ✓ If I had more time, I'd learn Italian. Jos ehto on epätodellinen, on pääosakin epätodellinen: will ei sovi siihen.

Testaa itsesi. Mitä tarkoittaa If I had a car, I'd drive to work: onko autoa vai ei? Miten sanotaan ”sinuna en olisi huolissani”? Voiton mahdollisuus on lähes nolla — miten täydennät If I ___ (win), I ___ (buy) a house?

näytä vastaukset
autoa ei ole — mennyt aika if-sanan jälkeen kertoo epätodellisesta; If I were you, I wouldn't worry (tai I wouldn't worry if I were you); toinen tyyppi: If I won, I'd buy a house.

Suomenkielisten virheet

kirjoitettu omalle kielellesi
1

would molemmissa osissa

✗ If I would have more time, I would learn Italian

2

Preesens epätodellisessa ehdossa

✗ If I have more time, I would learn Italian

3

”Sinun paikallasi” sanasta sanaan

✗ On your place I would talk to him

✓ If I were you, I'd talk to him

Pääte -lla vastaa usein on-sanaa, ja ”sinun paikallasi” kääntyy helposti sanasta sanaan. Englanniksi näin ei sanota; neuvon tavallinen kaava on If I were you.

4

Pilkku if-sanan edessä

✗ I'd learn Italian, if I had more time

4 min

would lyhenee myönteisessä lauseessa pelkäksi /d/-äänteeksi: I'd learn /aɪd ˈlɜːn/. Kuulemalta sen erottaa I learn -muodosta yksi äänne, joten nojaa lähellä oleviin if-sanaan ja menneeseen aikaan: ne kertovat, että seuraavaksi tulee would.

Täysi would on /wʊd/, se rimmaa sanan good kanssa, eikä l-kirjainta lausuta. Täytenä ja painollisena se kuuluu lyhyessä vastauksessa: Yes, I would. Kysymyksessä ja substantiivin jälkeen, painottomana, se on heikko — /wəd/: What would you do? /ˈwɒt wəd ju ˈduː/. wouldn't on /ˈwʊdnt/, eikä /d/:n ja /n/:n välissä ole vokaalia.

were on lauseessa If I were you painoton — /wə/: /ɪf aɪ wə ˈjuː/.

Teksti

This week we asked our readers: what would you do if you didn't have to work for a year?

Megan, a nurse from Cardiff: "I'd learn Italian properly. I'd find a small flat in Bologna, and I wouldn't speak a word of English for twelve months. If I lived there, I'd go to the market every morning and cook real Italian food. It would be a big adventure."

Dev, a taxi driver from Leeds: "Honestly? I'd sleep for a week first. Then I'd walk round the whole coast of Wales. It's about 870 miles, so if I walked twenty miles a day, I could finish it in about six weeks."

Lucy, a student from Belfast: "I wouldn't travel — everybody says that. I'd make my own computer game. I already have the idea. If I had more time, I'd finish it in a few months."

One reader sent us a different question: "My job is boring, but it's safe. Should I leave?" Our advice: if we were you, we wouldn't leave without a plan. We'd start an evening course first. If you enjoyed it, you could change jobs next year.
