În A2 #27 condiția era reală: If it rains, I'll stay at home — ploaia e foarte posibilă.

Forma: if + trecutul, în partea principală would + forma de bază.

afirmație If I had more time, I'd learn Italian.
negație If I didn't have to work, I wouldn't get up at six.
întrebare What would you do if you won the lottery?
răspuns scurt Yes, I would. / No, I wouldn't.

'd e prescurtarea lui would, la fel ca în I'd like (A2 #17). Părțile pot schimba locul: I'd learn Italian if I had more time. Virgula trebuie doar când partea cu if stă prima. În loc de would poate sta could — „aș putea”: If I had a car, I could drive to work.

Trecutul aici nu înseamnă trecut. If I had more time — despre ziua de azi. Forma de trecut îndepărtează întâmplarea de realitate — la fel ca în politicosul Could you…? (A2 #17).

Despre ce nu există acum: If I lived by the sea, I'd swim every day. Nu locuiesc la mare.

Despre un viitor puțin probabil sau inventat: What would you do if you won a million pounds?

Pentru un sfat: If I were you, I'd…

If I get the job, I'll move to Bristol. Șansa e reală: interviul a mers bine.
If I got the job, I'd move to Bristol.

were pentru toate persoanele. După if, be are o formă aparte — were chiar și cu I, he, she: If I were rich…, If she were here… În conversație se spune des și If I was rich — și asta e corect, doar mai simplu și mai puțin livresc.

Sfatul: If I were you, I'd… — „în locul tău aș…”. Aici vorbitorii nativi spun aproape întotdeauna were: If I were you, I'd talk to your manager. I wouldn't buy that car if I were you. Un astfel de sfat e mai blând decât You should… (A2 #11): nu-i faci morală omului, ci te pui în locul lui. Adesea prima parte se omite: I'd talk to your manager — „în locul tău” se înțelege oricum.

would fără if. Partea principală trăiește și singură, când condiția reiese din discuție sau nu există deloc: It would be nice to have a garden. — „Ce bine ar fi să ai o grădină.” I'd never do that. — „N-aș face niciodată așa ceva.” Which city would you like to live in?

If I knew her number, I'd call her. Dacă i-aș ști numărul, aș suna-o.
If it wasn't so expensive, we'd go more often.
I'd be happier if I didn't live so far from work.
Would you live abroad if you could? Ai locui în străinătate dacă ai putea?

Așa nu se spune. ✗ If I had more time, I will learn Italian → ✓ If I had more time, I'd learn Italian. Dacă condiția e ireală, ireală e și partea principală: will nu i se potrivește.

Verifică-te. Ce înseamnă If I had a car, I'd drive to work: are omul mașină sau nu? Șansa de a câștiga e aproape zero — cum termini If I ___ (win), I ___ (buy) a house?

arată răspunsurile
n-are mașină — trecutul după if vorbește despre ce e ireal; If I were you, I wouldn't worry (sau I wouldn't worry if I were you); tipul al doilea: If I won, I'd buy a house.

Greșelile vorbitorilor de limba română

adaptat pentru limba ta
1

would în ambele părți

„Dacă aș avea mai mult timp, aș învăța italiana” → ✗ If I would have more time, I would learn Italian → ✓ If I had more time, I would learn Italian. În română condiționalul „aș” stă în ambele părți, și would vrea să intre și după if. În engleză would stă doar în partea principală; după if rolul lui îl joacă trecutul.

2

„Aș putea” cuvânt cu cuvânt

✗ If I had a car, I would can drive to work

✓ If I had a car, I could drive to work

„Aș putea” pare să ceară would + can, dar can nu stă după alt verb modal: „aș putea” e în engleză un singur cuvânt, could.

3

„Dacă aș fi în locul tău”

✗ If I would be you, I'd talk to him

✓ If I were you, I'd talk to him

E capcana de la punctul 1, într-o formulă gata făcută: după if stă were, nu would be. Iar „în locul tău” tradus cuvânt cu cuvânt, In your place, I'd talk to him, se înțelege, dar se aude mult mai rar; formula obișnuită a sfatului e If I were you.

Pronunție

4 min

would în afirmație se reduce la /d/: I'd learn /aɪd ˈlɜːn/. După ureche de I learn îl deosebește un singur sunet, de aceea sprijină-te pe if și pe trecutul de alături: ele îți spun că urmează would.

would întreg — /wʊd/, rimează cu good, litera l nu se citește. Întreg și accentuat apare în răspunsul scurt: Yes, I would. În întrebare și după un substantiv, neaccentuat, e slab — /wəd/: What would you do? /ˈwɒt wəd ju ˈduː/. wouldn't — /ˈwʊdnt/, fără vocală între /d/ și /n/.

were în If I were you e neaccentuat — /wə/: /ɪf aɪ wə ˈjuː/.

Text

This week we asked our readers: what would you do if you didn't have to work for a year?

Megan, a nurse from Cardiff: "I'd learn Italian properly. I'd find a small flat in Bologna, and I wouldn't speak a word of English for twelve months. If I lived there, I'd go to the market every morning and cook real Italian food. It would be a big adventure."

Dev, a taxi driver from Leeds: "Honestly? I'd sleep for a week first. Then I'd walk round the whole coast of Wales. It's about 870 miles, so if I walked twenty miles a day, I could finish it in about six weeks."

Lucy, a student from Belfast: "I wouldn't travel — everybody says that. I'd make my own computer game. I already have the idea. If I had more time, I'd finish it in a few months."

One reader sent us a different question: "My job is boring, but it's safe. Should I leave?" Our advice: if we were you, we wouldn't leave without a plan. We'd start an evening course first. If you enjoyed it, you could change jobs next year.

Cinci-șase propoziții: ce ai face dacă un an n-ar trebui să lucrezi și un sfat pentru un prieten cu If I were you.

Model

If I didn't have to work for a year, I'd travel round South America. I'd learn Spanish on the way, and I'd write a blog about the trip. If I had enough money, I'd also buy a good camera. My friend Tom wants to leave his job, but he hasn't found a new one yet. I said to him: "If I were you, I wouldn't leave without a plan."
