Oppitunnilla A2 #27 opit ehtolauseiden säännön: if-sanan jälkeen tulevasta puhutaan preesensissä — If it rains, I'll stay at home, ei ✗ If it will rain.

Osa, joka alkaa sanalla when, as soon as, until, before, after tai by the time, kertoo, millä hetkellä jokin tapahtuu, eikä siinä ole will-sanaa. Englannissa konjunktion jälkeinen osa toimii kuten suomessa (I'll call you when I get there), mutta pääosa tarvitsee will-sanan. Yksi will riittää koko lauseelle: pääosa on jo kertonut, että puhutaan tulevasta.

Muoto. Pääosassa — will, going to, imperatiivi tai modaaliverbi. Konjunktion jälkeisessä osassa — Present Simple.

konjunktio merkitys esimerkki
when kun I'll call you when I get home.
as soon as heti kun We'll start as soon as everyone arrives.
once heti kun, kun on jo Once you pay, you'll get an email with the tickets.
until / till kunnes, siihen asti kun Wait here until I come back.
before ennen kuin Switch off the lights before you leave.
after sen jälkeen kun I'll ring you after the meeting finishes.
while sillä aikaa kun I'll make dinner while you're having a shower.
by the time siihen mennessä kun By the time you arrive, the food will be ready.

I won't leave until you get back. What will you do when you finish university? Will you call me as soon as you hear something?

Osien järjestys on vapaa. Jos konjunktio-osa tulee ensin, sen jälkeen tulee pilkku: When I get home, I'll call you. Jos se tulee toisena, pilkkua ei ole: I'll call you when I get home. Sääntö on sama kuin menneestä kerrottaessa (B1 #2).

”Kun saan valmiiksi” — Present Perfect. Jos on tärkeää, että yksi asia on kokonaan tehty ennen kuin toinen alkaa, konjunktion jälkeen tulee Present Perfect: I'll send you the report when I've finished it. As soon as I've read the book, I'll give it back. Näin sanotaan useimmiten sanojen when, after, as soon as, once ja until jälkeen. Present Simple on tässäkin oikein; Present Perfect korostaa, että asia on tehty. Tulevaa aikamuotoa ei tässäkään ole.

Milloin käytetään. Kolme tyypillistä tilannetta:

  • sopia ja luvata: I'll text you as soon as I land. — ”Viestitän heti, kun laskeudun”;
  • antaa ohje: Don't open the door until the light goes green. — ”Älä avaa, ennen kuin valo muuttuu vihreäksi”;
  • käydä suunnitelma läpi vaihe vaiheelta: After we've had lunch, we'll go to the museum.

until — ilman kieltoa. Suomen ”kunnes” toimii samoin kuin until: ”odota tässä, kunnes tulen takaisin” on myönteinen lause, ja englanniksi se on Wait until I come back. until-sanan jälkeen ei tule kieltoa. Jos kielto on pääosassa, merkitys on ”ei ennen kuin”: I won't pay until I see the car.

I'll call you when I see her.
I'll call you if I see her. Ehkä näen, ehkä en.
When will you be back? Kysymys ”milloin?” — tuleva aika tarvitaan.
I don't know when he'll be back. Epäsuora kysymys (B1 #19) — tuleva aika tarvitaan.
I'll call you when he gets back. Ajan konjunktio — preesens.

Tarkistus on helppo.

Kuinka usein: every. every + yksikön substantiivi ilmaisee säännöllisyyttä: every day, every Monday, every summer. Lukusanan kanssa siitä tulee väli: every two weeks — ”kahden viikon välein”, every three hours — ”kolmen tunnin välein”. Substantiivi on tässä monikossa, koska every koskee koko ryhmää ”kaksi viikkoa”. every other day — ”joka toinen päivä”. Yhdessä ilmausten once a week, twice a month (A1) kanssa nämä ovat kaksi tapaa kertoa tiheydestä: once a week — montako kertaa jaksossa, every two weeks — kuinka pitkä väli kertojen välillä on.

Every time I see him, he's on the phone. — siitä, mikä tapahtuu aina. Whenever you're in Leeds, come and see us. — tulevasta, mutta you're, ei ✗ you'll be.

every ja each. Molemmat tarkoittavat ”jokainen”, molemmat tulevat yksikön substantiivin eteen, ja niiden jälkeinen verbikin on yksikössä: Every room has a TV. Each room has a TV. Ero on siinä, miten puhuja katsoo ryhmää:

every — koko ryhmää kerralla, ”kaikki poikkeuksetta” Every student passed the exam.
each — jokaista erikseen, yksi kerrallaan The teacher spoke to each student.

Ne eroavat myös muodoltaan:

  • each voi koskea kahtakin (kuten suomen ”kumpikin”): She had a bag in each hand. every — vain kolmea tai useampaa.
  • each voi olla yksinään ja of-sanan kanssa: each of us, each of the rooms, We each got a copy. every ei tähän pysty: ✗ every of us → ✓ each of us tai every one of us.
  • Sanojen almost, nearly, not kanssa käy vain every: almost every day, Not every hotel has a lift.

Siellä, missä molemmat käyvät, eroa tuskin kuulee: every time ja each time tarkoittavat samaa.

Lisää esimerkkejä:

I'll let you know as soon as I hear anything. Kerron heti, kun kuulen jotain.
We won't start until everyone is here. Emme aloita, ennen kuin kaikki ovat paikalla.
Before you go, could you close the window? Sulkisitko ikkunan ennen kuin lähdet?
By the time you get there, the shop will be closed. Kun pääset perille, kauppa on jo kiinni.
I'll read the news while you're driving. Luen uutisia sillä aikaa, kun sinä ajat.
The bus comes every twenty minutes. Bussi kulkee kahdenkymmenen minuutin välein.
Each of the rooms has its own bathroom. Jokaisessa huoneessa on oma kylpyhuone.
Each of you will get a copy when the meeting starts.

Testaa itsesi. Miten sanotaan ”Soita minulle heti, kun pääset perille”? Miksi lauseessa I don't know when she'll arrive on will? each vai every: She wore a ring on ___ hand?

Call me as soon as you arrive tai Call me as soon as you get there; when on tässä kysymyssana epäsuorassa kysymyksessä, ei ajan konjunktio; each — käsiä on vain kaksi.

Suomenkielisten virheet

kirjoitettu omalle kielellesi
1

Preesens myös pääosassa

✗ I call you when I get home

✓ I'll call you when I get home

Suomen ”soitan, kun tulen kotiin” on kokonaan preesensissä, ja kun-osassa suomalainen vaisto on oikea. Mutta lupaus tai suunnitelma tarvitsee pääosaan will-sanan: yksi will lauseessa, pääosassa. Sama koskee epäsuoraa kysymystä: ”en tiedä, milloin näen hänet taas” on I don't know when I'll see her again. Tämä on oppitunnin päävirhe.

2

once in a week

✗ once in a week

✗ once in two weeks

✓ once a week

every two weeks. Suomen ”kerran viikossa”, ”kerran kahdessa viikossa” tuovat mukanaan in-sanan. Englannissa on once + a + jakso, ja välin nimeää every lukusanan kanssa.

3

every of us

✗ Every of us got a key

✓ Each of us got a key

tai Every one of us got a key. ”Jokainen meistä” kääntyy helposti suoraan, koska ”jokainen” on sekä every että each. of sopii kuitenkin vain sanan each perään.

4

Pilkku when-sanan edessä

✗ I'll call you, when I get home

✓ I'll call you when I get home

4 min

Konjunktiot ovat painottomia, paino on pääverbillä:

I'll call you when I get home. /aɪl ˈkɔːl jə wen aɪ ɡet ˈhəʊm/ — when ilman painoa
as soon as I know /əz ˈsuːn əz aɪ ˈnəʊ/ — molemmat as ääntyvät /əz/
until I come back /ənˈtɪl aɪ kʌm ˈbæk/ — ”ən-ti-lai”

Sanassa until paino on toisella tavulla: /ənˈtɪl/, ei suomalaisittain ensimmäiselle tavulle ”UN-til”. Loppu-/l/ sulautuu seuraavan sanan vokaaliin: until I kuulostaa yhdeltä kokonaisuudelta.

Kaksiosaisen lauseen intonaatio. Jos konjunktio-osa on ensin, ääni nousee sen lopussa — ”jatkoa seuraa”, — ja laskee pääosan lopussa: When I get home ↗, I'll call you ↘.

each ja every: each /iːtʃ/ — pitkä /iː/, älä sekoita sanaan itch /ɪtʃ/ — ”kutista”. every /ˈevri/ — kaksi tavua: keskimmäinen e ei äänny.

Teksti

Hi Sam,

Here's the plan for Friday. I'll get to the venue at eight, and I'll text you as soon as I arrive. Please don't let anyone in until I've checked the room — the projector didn't work last time.

When the participants arrive, each of them will get a badge and a printed programme. Every badge has a name and a group number on it. There are forty people, so we'll need two tables: one for groups one to three and the other for groups four and five.

The first session starts at half past nine. Before it begins, could you check that every chair has a pen and a feedback form? While I'm giving the introduction, you can look after the late arrivals.

We'll have a short break every hour and a half. After lunch, the groups will swap rooms, so some people will stay where they are and others will move upstairs.

By the time we finish, everyone will be tired, so let's keep the closing short. I'll send you the photos once I get home.

One other thing: could you bring another extension lead? We never have enough. If you have any questions, call me — I'll be in the office until six on Thursday.

Thanks! Jo
