All'A2 #27 hai imparato la regola del periodo ipotetico: dopo if, parlando del futuro, si mette il presente — If it rains, I'll stay at home, e non ✗ If it will rain.

La parte con when, as soon as, until, before, after, by the time dice in quale momento succederà qualcosa, e il futuro lì non c'è, anche se in italiano spesso c'è: «ti chiamerò quando arriverò» — I'll call you when I get there. All'inglese basta un solo will per tutta la frase: la parte principale ha già detto che si parla del futuro.

La forma. Nella parte principale — will, going to, l'imperativo o un verbo modale.

congiunzione significato esempio
when quando I'll call you when I get home.
as soon as appena, non appena We'll start as soon as everyone arrives.
once appena, una volta che Once you pay, you'll get an email with the tickets.
until / till finché non, fino a quando Wait here until I come back.
before prima che, prima di Switch off the lights before you leave.
after dopo che, dopo I'll ring you after the meeting finishes.
while mentre I'll make dinner while you're having a shower.
by the time per quando, entro il momento in cui By the time you arrive, the food will be ready.

I won't leave until you get back. What will you do when you finish university? Will you call me as soon as you hear something?

L'ordine delle parti è libero. Se la parte con la congiunzione viene prima, dopo di lei si mette la virgola: When I get home, I'll call you. Se viene seconda, la virgola non c'è: I'll call you when I get home.

I'll send you the report when I've finished it. As soon as I've read the book, I'll give it back. Si dice così soprattutto dopo when, after, as soon as, once, until.

Tre situazioni tipiche:

  • mettersi d'accordo e promettere: I'll text you as soon as I land. — «Ti scrivo appena atterro»;
  • dare istruzioni: Don't open the door until the light goes green. — «Non aprire finché non diventa verde»;
  • organizzare un programma passo per passo: After we've had lunch, we'll go to the museum.

I won't pay until I see the car.

I'll call you when I see her.
I'll call you if I see her. Forse la vedrò, forse no.
When will you be back? Domanda «quando?» — il futuro ci vuole.
I don't know when he'll be back. Domanda indiretta (B1 #19) — il futuro ci vuole.
I'll call you when he gets back.

every time e whenever — «ogni volta che». Every time I see him, he's on the phone. — su ciò che succede sempre. Whenever you're in Leeds, come and see us. — sul futuro, ma you're, non ✗ you'll be.

every e each. Each room has a TV. La differenza sta in come chi parla guarda il gruppo:

every — tutto il gruppo insieme, «tutti senza eccezione» Every student passed the exam.
each — ciascuno separatamente, uno dopo l'altro The teacher spoke to each student.

Si distinguono anche nella forma:

  • each si usa anche per due: She had a bag in each hand. every — solo per tre o più.
  • each sta anche da solo e con of: each of us, each of the rooms, We each got a copy. every così non funziona: ✗ every of us → ✓ each of us o every one of us.
  • Con almost, nearly, not va bene solo every: almost every day, Not every hotel has a lift.

Dove vanno bene tutti e due, la differenza quasi non si sente: every time ed each time vogliono dire la stessa cosa.

Altri esempi:

I'll let you know as soon as I hear anything. Ti faccio sapere appena so qualcosa.
We won't start until everyone is here. Non cominciamo finché non ci sono tutti.
Before you go, could you close the window? Prima di andare, puoi chiudere la finestra?
By the time you get there, the shop will be closed. Quando arrivi, il negozio sarà già chiuso.
I'll read the news while you're driving. Leggo le notizie mentre guidi.
The bus comes every twenty minutes. L'autobus passa ogni venti minuti.
Each of the rooms has its own bathroom. Ogni camera ha il suo bagno.
Each of you will get a copy when the meeting starts.

✗ every days → ✓ every day.

Perché in I don't know when she'll arrive c'è will? each o every: She wore a ring on ___ hand?

mostra le risposte
Call me as soon as you arrive o Call me as soon as you get there; qui when è una parola interrogativa in una domanda indiretta, non una congiunzione di tempo; each — le mani sono solo due.

Errori tipici degli italofoni

adattato alla tua lingua
1

Il futuro dopo when

«Ti chiamerò quando arriverò a casa» → ✗ I'll call you when I will get home → ✓ I'll call you when I get home. È l'errore più frequente della lezione: ✗ as soon as I will know → ✓ as soon as I know.

2

Il futuro anteriore

«Te lo mando quando l'avrò finito» → ✗ I'll send it to you when I will have finished it → ✓ I'll send it to you when I've finished it.

3

Il «non» di «finché non»

✗ Wait here until I don't come back → ✓ Wait here until I come back; ✗ until the rain won't stop → ✓ until the rain stops. In italiano quel «non» non nega niente; in inglese dopo until non c'è not.

4

«Tutti i giorni» parola per parola

✗ I go to the gym all the days

✓ I go to the gym every day

I'll call you when I get home. /aɪl ˈkɔːl jə wen aɪ ɡet ˈhəʊm/ — when è debole
as soon as I know /əz ˈsuːn əz aɪ ˈnəʊ/ — tutti e due gli as suonano /əz/

When I get home ↗, I'll call you ↘.

Hi Sam,

Here's the plan for Friday. I'll get to the venue at eight, and I'll text you as soon as I arrive. Please don't let anyone in until I've checked the room — the projector didn't work last time.

When the participants arrive, each of them will get a badge and a printed programme. Every badge has a name and a group number on it. There are forty people, so we'll need two tables: one for groups one to three and the other for groups four and five.

The first session starts at half past nine. Before it begins, could you check that every chair has a pen and a feedback form? While I'm giving the introduction, you can look after the late arrivals.

We'll have a short break every hour and a half. After lunch, the groups will swap rooms, so some people will stay where they are and others will move upstairs.

By the time we finish, everyone will be tired, so let's keep the closing short. I'll send you the photos once I get home.

One other thing: could you bring another extension lead? We never have enough. If you have any questions, call me — I'll be in the office until six on Thursday.

Thanks! Jo
