文法

人の言葉を伝えるときは2つの動詞を使います。この2つは入れかえられません。

say — 何を言うか He said that he was tired.
tell — だれに言うか He told me that he was tired.

say は、前置詞なしで人を置けません：✗ He said me → ✓ He said to me または He told me。

that は省略できます： He said (that) he was tired — どちらも正しい形です。

人の言葉を伝えるときは、時制が1つ過去にずれます：

"I am tired." He said he was tired.
"I work here." She said she worked here.
"I will call you." He said he would call me.

学校で習う「時制の一致」です。このレベルでは、このずれを自分で作れなくてもかまいません。聞いてわかることが大事です。 くわしくはB1で、疑問文や依頼の伝え方といっしょに扱います。今大事なのは、伝える文の was は過去を表しているのではない、ということです：その人は今のことを話していました。

代名詞も変わります： "I am tired" → He said he was tired.

そのままの言葉と伝える文を混ぜてはいけません：He said, "I am tired." か He said (that) he was tired のどちらかです。

「言った」をいつも同じ動詞にする。

✗ She told that she was busy

✓ She said that she was busy

または She told me that she was busy。日本語では相手がいてもいなくても「言った」ですが、英語では相手を言わないときは said、相手を言うときは told ＋人です（✗ He said me）。

was を「〜していた」と取る。

He said he was tired は「疲れていたと言った」ではなく、「疲れていると言った」です。日本語は「疲れていると言った」と今の形のまま伝えますが、英語は said に合わせて was にします。聞いたときに過去のことだと思わないようにしましょう。

「と」で、そのままの言葉と伝える文を混ぜる。

✗ He said that "I am tired"

✓ He said that he was tired

または He said, "I am tired."。日本語の「と」はどちらにも使えますが、英語では、そのままの言葉はコンマと引用符で、伝える文は that と he、was で言います。

人の言葉を伝える文では、強勢は伝える動詞ではなく、言った内容に置きます：

He said he was tired. She told me she worked there.

said /sed/ — 短い /e/ の音で、/eɪ/ ではありません。つづりにつられて「セイド」と言わないようにしましょう。 told /təʊld/ — 二重母音 /əʊ/ です。「トールド」と平らに伸ばしません。
