Grammatica

5 min

say — dire CHE COSA He said that he was tired.
tell — dire A CHI He told me that he was tired.

say non prende la persona senza preposizione: ✗ He said me → ✓ He said to me o He told me.

La parola that si può omettere: He said (that) he was tired — vanno bene tutte e due.

discorso diretto discorso indiretto
"I am tired." He said he was tired.
"I work here." She said she worked here.
"I will call you." He said he would call me.

Cambiano anche i pronomi: "I am tired" → He said he was tired.

Citazione e discorso indiretto non si mescolano: o He said, "I am tired.", o He said (that) he was tired.

Errori tipici degli italofoni

adattato alla tua lingua
1

said me

«Mi ha detto che…» → ✗ He said me that… → ✓ He told me that… o He said to me that…

2

told senza persona

«Ha detto che era occupata» → ✗ She told that she was busy → ✓ She said that she was busy o She told me that… Dopo told la persona è obbligatoria.

3

Il soggetto che manca

«Ha detto che era stanco» → ✗ He said that was tired → ✓ He said that he was tired. In italiano «era» basta da solo; in inglese la parte dopo that vuole il suo soggetto: he, she, I.

4

Il condizionale passato

«Ha detto che mi avrebbe chiamato» → ✗ He said he would have called me → ✓ He said he would call me. Dove l'italiano mette «avrebbe chiamato», l'inglese mette il semplice would + verbo.

Pronuncia

3 min

He said he was tired. She told me she worked there.
